Metoprolol. Tapering off. Side effects. Horrible drug!

Metoprolol has been the worst medication I've ever been on. After a year of not knowing what was making me sick we found out it's this poison. I have never suffered so much and now after so much I found out it was this medication which I was given for hypertension. I've always ran but high and I believe I in fact have white coast hypertension I have MS so it's hard to know what's wha. Unclearly this drug ruined my life. I was 5"8 145lbs after losing a lot of weight from the pesky steroids I was given initially for MS then this drug in one year (despite healthy eating) packed on 30lbs and gave me a list of horrific side effects to include swelling chest pressure burning in arms sleep disturbances extreme dizziness depression I never thought possible. I'm slowly tapering off as no one warns you how risky stopping this drug is. Into week 2 of taper and it's hard
I have a tough time with MS but was never this sick
Also doctors hand this crap out like nothing despite FDA warnings. Anyone else go through this? I can't wait to be rid of this poison in me. My anxiety is off the charts
I can't believe I agreed to take this Med. I trusted my doctor. Never again. Have been to ER very sick 3 times. Even ER doc said it's not a good Med to treat HTN of any kind
Thank you for your time

Before I started this medication, my BP was 128/88. The second day I went to the ER because i was at 160/102. Day 6 and im at 140/95. This mesication made my BP worse. Going to my PCP tomorrow to see if he can take me off of this since its doing the opposite of what it should for my BP. My HR is good though!

Used briefly following Covid-19 with tachycardia and raised BP, 50mg per day.
Used for a couple of months and came off in June/July, just tapered over a week.
Had mild Covid-19 symptoms again a week or two back, so used to combat the same symptoms again.
Only had used for perhaps 4 to 5 days, week or so maximum. Stopped cold turkey.
This time however has been hell. Last Wednesday heart rate went nuts, BP to 180:100, tight chest etc, and got taken to hospital in an ambulance.
At the time, had no idea what was up, what was causing it and the hospital had no idea, either.
Had ecg, ekg, ct angiograph and tested for heart attack and all levels etc were normal, no blocked coronaries etc. Perfectly healthy.
Seems every second day, I get weird flare ups. Wednesday hospital. Friday night heart rate jumped up for 30/60 minutes. Last night Sunday needing to pee all night and feelings like a UTI, thought for a while it was kidney stones, but checking bloods there is nothing to suggest.
The next day nothing.
Weird side effects like legs feeling heavy some days, arms the other. Strange tingles around the body. Head pressure. Back pain. Occasionally chest pain mainly on the right. Never stays put and weirdness moves around the body.
At least for me I only had a day or two of actually feeling the high adrenaline, in terms of feeling flight or fight, which I honestly never have had. Never stress too hard.
Seems as it leaves my system I just get random strange and sometimes awful feeling pains.
My ex wife who I'm good friends with think it's all in my head, but I know this is definitely the BB doing this.
I definitely won't use again, and sadly feel like I'm gonna have to ride this out cold turkey.
On the plus side I have a watch that monitors everything and I can see a general trend for the last 4 to 5 days that shows heart rate, BP etc is all trending to normal levels, so it seems a case of riding this out and learning from experience.

I agree with you on the every other day thing! I am the same way. I will have a good or half decent day then the next day all hell breaks loose. Or I will have a bad day of symptoms then spend the next without symptoms but so tired from the day before and its agony. Has anything gotten better for you? I am on day 26 which is better than the first weeks but still pretty bad. Blood pressure has began to stabilize into the normal range and heart rate is beginning to come down as well except during anxiety and palpitations. Right now my biggest is the anxiety. After that i would say the increase in heart rate that wakes me from my sleep
every other night. Please tell me its getting better for you.

i totally agree with you that Metoprolol has been the worst drug for me . I was put on it because i had the lisinipril cough. My gp felt i could use this new drug because he told me i was a type A personality. i have NO prior cardiac issues. i am in relatively good health. Since starting that crap 6 years ago, i have not felt right. i am very tired. i sweat a lot. i have gained easily 40 pounds. i can feel my heart beating hard when i am not doing anything. if i water the plants i am dripping with sweat. i moved and did not get to see the doc tgat put me on the drug. Got a new GP and BEGGED to be removed. She refused and even wanted me to take more of this crap which i didnt increase the dosage. I now have a new cardio doc and he is weening me off metoprolol. He didnt give me a set schedule but said i should pull myself off over a two week period. He wants me to take a new drug Chlorthalidone. He also has me on losartin. The chlor. is a low dose and i only take 1/2 of the losartin . So finger crossed that i get the poison out with no problems. i am finding to do my own research on every drug prescribed.

How are you doing so far Carol? I am currently on day 26 of stopping labetalol ( a beta blocker) cold turkey because I was only taking a fourth of a pill. (25mg) I must say it has not been easy at all. Any relief for you yet?

I've quit metoprolol 25 after years of use as instructed by the doctor. Ever since I haven't been the same. While my heart rate and BP is within normal range now, my anxiety, depression and ADHD have gone so bad I can't live like this. I'm scared of being alive and every day is a massive struggle. Has anyone had any issues like this? About a month after quitting beta blockers my mental health just collapsed to the point I can't function. I've just tried an SSRI which gave me horrible panic attacks and BP increase. I'm in agony, sadness, I can't live like this.
Anyone had anything remotely similar after many years of use and withdrawal?

Does anybody find Metoprolol has made you get frequent ectopic beats? I'm pregnant, have mitral valve prolapse, mild regurgitation and LBBB. I was put on Tartrate 25mg once a day around two weeks ago due to my SVT keep flaring up quite badly. However I constantly feel like my heart is skipping a beat now. I use FibriCheck to monitor and even that's picking it up. It's worse at night but I do feel it throughout the day too. I'm sick of it. It makes me worried and I'm scared to even sleep at night.

I've been taking Lexapro for years. It doesn't help with my anxiety, so I take Valium as needed. I was recently prescribed Metoprolol. Shortly after, I've felt like a hormonal teenager, crying every day, extremely intrusive thoughts that I've never had before, crawling out of my skin, zero patience, overwhelmed, massive anxiety attacks, nightmares, you name it.
I decided to do some research on metroprolol and it's a friggin BETA BLOCKER which is on my allergy list because they make me insane. This is a fairly common side effect because it messes with other brain chemicals and your central nervous system.
I've never taken a beta blocker this long. But, I'm not taking it again and I'm calling the cardiologist tomorrow.
THIS has GOT to be what suddenly changed.
I've been living in hell for the last month. I'm livid!

Have any of you experienced long-term withdrawal effects from Bisprol? For example, strings in the eyes when I look forward. I feel like there are spider-shaped strings while looking with fluttering of the eyelashes.
