Metoprolol. Tapering off. Side effects. Horrible drug!

Metoprolol has been the worst medication I've ever been on. After a year of not knowing what was making me sick we found out it's this poison. I have never suffered so much and now after so much I found out it was this medication which I was given for hypertension. I've always ran but high and I believe I in fact have white coast hypertension I have MS so it's hard to know what's wha. Unclearly this drug ruined my life. I was 5"8 145lbs after losing a lot of weight from the pesky steroids I was given initially for MS then this drug in one year (despite healthy eating) packed on 30lbs and gave me a list of horrific side effects to include swelling chest pressure burning in arms sleep disturbances extreme dizziness depression I never thought possible. I'm slowly tapering off as no one warns you how risky stopping this drug is. Into week 2 of taper and it's hard

I have a tough time with MS but was never this sick

Also doctors hand this crap out like nothing despite FDA warnings. Anyone else go through this? I can't wait to be rid of this poison in me. My anxiety is off the charts

I can't believe I agreed to take this Med. I trusted my doctor. Never again. Have been to ER very sick 3 times. Even ER doc said it's not a good Med to treat HTN of any kind

Thank you for your time

Hi Rose. Please see your doctor ASAP. Tell  them everything you’re going through and set up a schedule to wean yourself off this drug you haven’t been on it that long so it shouldn’t take as long as it’s taken some of us that were on it for a longer amount of time

Get this poison out of your system see if they will try something different or just do it some of us did once we got off this medication you just make some adjustments to your diet and you’re able to control your blood pressure that way but please see your doctor before doing anything even if you make up your own schedule make sure you run it by the doctor and it’s placed in your chart so they are aware of it that’s what I did if I can be of any more help please let me know best wishes to everything you do with th get this poison out of your system see if they will try something different or just do it some of us did once we got off this medication you just make some adjustments to your diet and you’re able to control your blood pressure that way but please see your doctor before doing anything even if you make up your own schedule make sure you run it by the doctor and it’s placed in your chart so they are aware of it that’s what I did if I can be of any more help please let me know best wishes to you

rose09719...you have been on Metropolol for 20 days..1 day shy of 3 weeks. Getting off it shouldn't be much of a problem for you, but you must not suddenly stop. 25mg/daily isn't a lot by any stretch. You could start by taking 1/2 pill for a week, then 1/4 pill for a week, then 1/4 every other day, etc. A pharmacist could help you with that, but regardless of what plan you have, you truly must tell your doctor about this, & have his/her permission to do so. Tee is absolutely right in what she says. I would never encourage anyone to stop taking medications without their doctor's knowledge. Some people do it,& to me, it's like playing Russian Roulette., & you can be sure, the doctor's don't like it. If done often enough, I wouldn't be surprised if a doctor were to tell the patient..."don't come to me..you don't follow my instructions so you're just wasting my time".

Anything else we can help with here, please don't hesitate to write. Please let us know how you get on.

This discussion has been the most helpful I’ve ever read. For the past 3 months I have been suffering so many of the same issues stated here. I started this poison at the end of dec after having an episode of svt. Heart rate was up to 165. Had to go to the ER to stop. They started me on 50 mg extended. I felt like a zombie in a week, my chest hurt.  We cut it back to 25mg and I was on that for 2 months. Felt worse. Anxiety through the roof.  My mind wasn’t my own.  Went down to 12.5 and want off of it.  It’s killing my stomach and the anxiety is unbearable. She wanted me on Xanax!  She’s called for a calcium channel blocker. Wants me to immediately start taking it. I’m getting off and seeing how it goes. Today is my last day o 12.5.   I’m petrified the svt will start again. I already had one last week but not bad. Thanks for providing all the info.  Peg

Hi Peggy. How are you feeling?  Any updates?

I'm in my 4th week off the this horrible poison and still struggling. Wondering if anyone had dealt with tingling all over their body, specifically the head back and arms. Feels like something is crawling, like the feeling you have after you sneeze at times. Also, dealing with red, dry eyes and warm, flushy skin. I sooooooo regret that I ever took this crap. Everything scares me now.

Yes. I went through all that please let your doc know. It’s a horrible drug. I am so glad to be rid of it out of my system I went through total hell from it. I don’t think doctors out there even bother to look into exactly the side effects and how these these medicines can do more damage than good before they are so quick to write out a script

And Blood pressure changes constantly throughout the day I think a lot of people are on medicine for it that don’t even need it

I wish you well. Please report symptoms to your doctor

im 8 weeks off of 50mg once a day of metoprolol and im scared out of my mind. last night i felt this pop in my head then it felt tingly afterwards. i often get shaky, heart races & extreme anxiety. i am so depressed. some days i wonder if its still the metoprolol doing this to me. i really wish i never started taking it!

Yes I had tingling.  I’ve been off of it a month. Still have terrible anxiety

Hate to hear that but you’re not alone

Maybe the doctor can give you something for the anxiety to get you through the worst part

It helps. I used a low dose Aprazolam (xanex) And I don’t even use it much anymore except once in awhile

Thank you. Yes he gave me Xanax. Even a sliver knocks me out. I’m trying acupuncture this week. I feel like I was poisoned. Just a horrible drug as you know.

Oh good. It helps. And I couldn’t agree with you more this thing should be banned from the FDA it is total poison I mean just look at how many people on this one site have been affected imagine how many others out there that haven’t even posted her come online about it

Yes it’s appalling.  I am a very strong independent person and it made me a sniffling weakling.  As you said in your posts I am so mad at myself for just trusting the doctor that put me on it for one episode of svt.  I had more heart issues on it. Things have calmed down considerable now that I’m off of it. I have rheumatoid arthritis so an autoimmune as you do.  I’m off all the toxins for it as well right now. None of them worked. I have to take prednisone and am on an anti inflammatory diet.  Natural first for me from now on. I’ll have to be very ill before I start popping meds from now on. Thank you for sharing your story.

I totally understand Peggy I have multiple sclerosis I was diagnosed in 2008 and I went through a lot of issues with MS medication and I stopped all of it it made me feel worse than I already do now I just treat the symptoms as they come if I have pain I treat the pain if I have any other issues I treat them as they come

No longer will  I finally trust any doctor to hand me another prescription for something I’m not sure   I beat myself up for a long time over this mess with the BP meds because I’m a nurse butwe make the worst patients that is a fact

And I completely agree with having that medication made you feel so weak and whiny I think I’m extremely independent and I hated how it made me feel absolutely hands-down one of the worst drugs out there

I hope things continue to get better for you I know RA is brutal like  MS
