Metoprolol. Tapering off. Side effects. Horrible drug!

Metoprolol has been the worst medication I've ever been on. After a year of not knowing what was making me sick we found out it's this poison. I have never suffered so much and now after so much I found out it was this medication which I was given for hypertension. I've always ran but high and I believe I in fact have white coast hypertension I have MS so it's hard to know what's wha. Unclearly this drug ruined my life. I was 5"8 145lbs after losing a lot of weight from the pesky steroids I was given initially for MS then this drug in one year (despite healthy eating) packed on 30lbs and gave me a list of horrific side effects to include swelling chest pressure burning in arms sleep disturbances extreme dizziness depression I never thought possible. I'm slowly tapering off as no one warns you how risky stopping this drug is. Into week 2 of taper and it's hard
I have a tough time with MS but was never this sick
Also doctors hand this crap out like nothing despite FDA warnings. Anyone else go through this? I can't wait to be rid of this poison in me. My anxiety is off the charts
I can't believe I agreed to take this Med. I trusted my doctor. Never again. Have been to ER very sick 3 times. Even ER doc said it's not a good Med to treat HTN of any kind
Thank you for your time

I have been on Metoprolol since I had open-heart surgery in 2015. I have never gotten sick from it but I have gained 40 pounds and erectile dysfunction is crazy. I also have an ICD implant (pacemaker/defibrillator). I don't know if I really need this drug or not but my b/p seems to be the same with it or without it. I'd love to get off of this drug myself.

If it’s not doing anything for your blood pressure I buy all means would talk to my doctor about it and get off this poison I will never look at this medication in the same light again or most BP meds for that matter
They do more harm than good I think we can lower blood pressure if it’s an issue without these poison drugs
Talk to your doc. I was so happy to be rid of this medication it was a nightmare I never want to face again
Best wishes

I think I’m completely over all the elephant father I think there’s a few things I have lingered I have noticed as a result of this pure poison drug I wish you the best and I completely understand what you’re going through believe me they need to ban that drug

They put my on it for SVT. At the time my BP was running high 130s over 90. Now that I’m off it’s 120s over 80s. I now have a channel blocker that I would take for the heart palpitations if needed. I’ve had one since December. I’m hoping they don’t get worse.

I have a very good doctor and she would never think 130/90 is high seas of the believe that that new charting system that’s out is garbage I mean it used to be where even higher blood pressure’s were considered normal and people didn’t have issues with that now they just want to throw you on a panel the minute it’s one point up from the so-called new chart that they have out not to mention a persons blood pressure changes numerous times throughout the day
Again I’m very happy that you’re doing better and you’ve only had one incident with the palpitations which channel blocker did they give you and when you take it do you have any issues with it ?
Best of everything to you ♥️

Tee19...I'd be as happy as a clam if my readings were frequently 130/90. The so-called "gold standard" reading was 120/80 but the medical profession has come to realize (finally) that it's impossible for everyone to have those readings, especially as we get older & other contributing factors. My doctor wouldn't dream of putting anyone on bp meds with readings of 130/90..never.

Had no idea want it could. I do not trust Dr. they are the ones that told me to stay on Xanax for anxiety, I did and my God it ruined my health. But to Met. I weaned off almost 90mg. Last yr. was a lot . Took a break, now finishing it. My gut, intestines, are awful. Bloated, gas, BLOATED!! My skin feels like fingers screeching down a chalkboard. Awful. I worry about the last 25mg.

What was your dosage of Xanax I’m on the smallest dose that I don’t use it all the time I had to use it and I was going through coming off of this poison but now I just have to use it once in a while for anxiety attacks that are related to a couple other things but Being in that poison gave me more intense anxiety attacks when I was coming off of it ) still I don’t use it every day
I’ve had Xanax for a year and a half now but it takes me a long time to go through one prescription And I have the lowest dose and I only use half of that when needed.
I have her a lot a horrible stories about people that have been on Xanax for a long time and trying to come off of it I have always been careful with medication as I am on an elixir for my pain medicine for the MS and a few other things and that’s why am even more angry at myself for not paying attention to that point and I was put on of all the medicines I’ve ever been on and I have had some ugly meds for MS that BP med was the absolute worst

Even though my blood pressure tends to be weird here and there I found a few dietary changes and doing a couple other remedies have helped me and I will never take another BP related medications in my life not ever again
And trust me I won’t say how I know that doctors are so unbelievable there are very few good ones out there most of them push pills way too easy without doing their homework then there are some that think they’re doing the right thing and just honestly made a bad judgment call
I hope and pray you can rid yourself of that crap it’s the worst medicine ever I still can’t believe to this day when I went through on that drug and I still think I still suffer from some residual stuff because of it I always try to blame it on the MS but I bet you anything it was that poison

tanya 89939...I think you're weaning just fine. The last thing you want is rebound. You're now down to 1/4..which is GREAT..Why not try 1/4 every other day for say a few days, then every other other day..then quit? You can ask your Pharmacist about this as well. Keep up the good work...don't give up. Please keep us up to date.

is a piece of cake compared to that, But I don’t want to suffer any more. I appreciate your response.

tanya 89939...I couldn't agree with you more when you say "if you don't need it, don't take it". All too often medications are prescribed. It boggles the mind to think that Drs know how to treat symptoms but can't make the ailment go away. How is that????
I'm having a Gastroscopy in just over a week...suffering from GERD for several months now. I came off Tecta, & was given some white chalky medicine from the Gastroenterologist..it's a name like "Suspension". Anyway it helped a little, but not much, but I wouldn't resume taking the Tecta again because it would only cause rebound GERD when I stopped. IF the Dr. finds something during Gastroscopy, I've already made up my mind that meds are not the answer. If I have a lazy valve or whatever....fix it...don't mask it with meds. This has gone on far too long. Long term meds are not an option. I know I shouldn't go 'what iffing'., but my mind is made up. Just because esophageal manometry was normal 1 yr 10 months ago, & Gastroscopy was normal 2 1/2 yrs ago, doesn't mean there isn't something going on. Those results are OLD, & it shocks me to think a Dr. would say "those tests came back normal". Say what???? OLD results???????? The crap we put up with is astounding..but we must be our own advocates when it comes to our health.
Again, I agree 1000% with what you said..."if you don't need it...don't take it".

Yeah I’m very careful with the Aprazolam. I literally bite the tiny end of the smallest dose if I’m having any kind of anxiety and that’s it
Now I’ve heard horror stories of people that are on high doses that I can’t even believe it because of just that teeny bit helps me I don’t understand why people need mega milligrams of it to get through the day
I thought I was passed all the side effects from that poison beta blocker but I wonder if I have some residual stuff going on
I hope you’ve been well

I’m learning to do other things to get through a panic attack as well but my anxiety didn’t only come from those beta blockers then it just became worse because of them I have a lot of anxiety from being in two war zones. I went for a couple years pretending like everything is just fine and then one day I hit a brick wall emotionally speaking

I get what you’re saying I really do but I think everybody reacts to a medication differently as a nurse I’ve seen Many people do well on some medications that others can tolerate however I dropped the ball when it came to me and this beta blocker poison I was going through a lot of things still am have had several deployments to OIF/OEF as a nurse so needless to say I didn’t do my homework when it came to me being the patient. I learned a very valuable lesson with this poison BP med
However as I said there will be people that do just fine on this job how I have no clue that there are many out there that do perfectly fine on it however I have found most people don’t do well on this particular BP drug

I agree with Tee, people will react differently. With that said, the chances of people NOT having bad reactions and being in this forum are slim. There will be people just fine but they probably won't be on this kind of forum to voice it.

Just like with the Aprazolam. Some people will easily be hooked on it and can’t get off and others can use it use it for years without any issues
I’m given an elixir form of pain medication for the SPMS I have. I’ve been on it since the date of my diagnosis I have never requested extra medicine or higher dose and there’s been many months I haven’t even used it You hear all sorts of stories of people getting hooked on opiates something fierce. The flipside is there’s others that can responsibly use them without any issues but now those of us that are safe for users are probably going to have to pay the price of those who have abused them.
It doesn’t concern me as much because as I said I’ve gone without it for many months at a time even longer especially when I was still working and unable to use anything for pain other than Motrin and I only use the pain medication when I’m in a great deal of pain. I don’t use it 4 times a day just because the bottle tells me to :-). People that get opiate prescriptions under the impression they have to use it exactly like the bottle says nothing could be farther from the truth unless you’re a postop surgical patient for the first few days. I had my gallbladder out and had us of pain medicine before I was discharged from the hospital. When they handed me and our ask for additional pain medication I told him I didn’t need it because I already had some on hand at home that was given to me for the MS They looked stunned. It appears no one ever turns down an Rx for pain medicine these days
It’s almost like it all you can type attitude but not for me
I’m also careful with those kind of meds because I want them to work when I’m going to need them later down the road probably a bit more
I appreciate your input have a great day
