Mid-thigh pain after hip replacement

Posted , 40 users are following.

I am 7 months post-cementless hip replacement and have recurring mid-thigh pain. I am at a loss on how to deal with this. I've read to cut back on exercise when it's bad and have also read to keep active and walk to help set the stem better. I have noticed that laying on my sofa too much is causing pain. I probably spend 3-4 hours during the day on the sofa watching TV. My bed doesn't seem to affect my thigh pain much. Has anyone else had this experience? It's a mystery to me what cause the increased pain. Standing seem to help somewhat. Any advice to deal with the pain? Thank you.

I had the same problem. Developed 3 months after surgery when I overdid the walking and exercise. Surgeon told me to cut back for a month. Pain went away never to return. Darn Stem

Thanks, Steve. Did you cut out all daily walking except necessary for work, shopping etc?  I've always walked 1/2 - 1 mile every day. Did you do any stretching or use ice or heat? Thanks.

      hi dave,

what are you doing right now ?

Are you going out for a walk ? I agree with previous posts that walking daily will be good to keep your muscles from getting weaker - not too far, just be comfortable  -

exercises you might want to continue as well -

Just do not overdo it ...

What kind of pain is it? is it sharp or kind of dull -

I had similar discomfort for a while - almost could feel the hardware so to speak - it was not pleasant and felt like cold from the inside out ...

      Do you trust your surgeon?

One day, one step at a time will get you there !!

      God bless

Renee, thanks for your reply. My pain has been mostly dull and burning but yesterday I had my first sharp pains. I think I overdid it with walking then mowing the grass, front and back. Feels better today with some rest. Take care, Dave

You can walk, just not at a fast pace. The shape pains are no fun. I still walked, I just stayed off the treadmill at 4 mph and gave up trying to keep up with my wife.  Best of luck. I did not help with Stem pain

I had THR seven weeks ago. Thought I was doing quite well. Saw consultant last week who was pleased with my progress. Saw physio who made me walk without a crutch. Since then have had thigh pain and back on more painkillers. Disappointed I seem to have nagging pain back again. Too much too soon as regards walking without crutch maybe but its painful

      Dear Mauritius

That's such a shame but try not to let it get you down.I try to make everyone aware that until your muscles are REALLY strong enough it is a very risky to put aside both crutches.

Just take it easy and build up you muscle strength with the exercises, and concentrate on walking with a good gait in a deturmined strong way with both crutches.

It will not be long I'm sure.

      Happy walking. Richard

Hi I know you had your hip replacement a few months ago but I just wanted to ask....I had mine about 7 weeks ago and have like a burning ache in both thighs and just above the knee....did you have the your pain in both your legs or just the operated side? Thanks

Hi Dave , I am almost 9 weeks post op after my second hip replacement. Was doing much better than last time until I started driving. Now have pain in front of my thigh muscle. Have an automatic car and this op was my right thigh. Wondering if that's why ?

Ps , I was told to keep using one crutch as long as I am limping. It worked last time so when I go out I use one . Limping is def less. Booked a cruise for Oct so hope I will be ok by then ?

I had a THR on both hips in 2016 January & December and Arthoscopic Surgery on my right knee in July 2017 I am at a loss for the thigh pain in the leg I had operated on first. When standing after waking from a nights sleep or standing from a sitting position the pain is unbearable and I feel like I am going to go crashing through my coffee table or hit the floor after waking. I have seen specialists, X-rays, exercise ie shoveling snow which I have no choice in doing or I don’t get out. I am 57 years of age and I can’t take this pain anymore, my GP refuses to prescribe anything for my pain and personally I am beginning to think all the medical professionals think I am crazy or lying. What is the problem here and if I don’t get any relief soon I may just take my life, so frustrated !

So sorry Glenn, sounds absolutely awful for you.   I don't have any solution apart from icing , elevation and stretch stockings but one cannot spend all day and every day with feet above head and applying ice can one.    Can you tell us what you are doing to try to reduce the pain and how it is at night in case someone can suggest something.

      Cheers, Richard

I am sorry for your suffering Glenn. I am 5 months post cementless THR and have a lot of thigh pain that is pretty constant with any movement. I've been told this can last a while, but have you had a CT Scan to rule out any microfractures or other problems? That's my next step, the CT Scan. I've been told soft tissue pain after THR can take a long time to resolve and that this is probably what is causing my thigh pain. The advice is to exercise only moderately not to exercise through a lot of pain and to continue to strengthen the gluteal muscles which is very important for THR and thigh pain. You deserve answers and some solutions to your pain, and perhaps you would benefit from a CT Scan and more physiotherapy. Don't give up!

HI glenn...I went through exactly what you went thru in 2016...I had the first surgery in April unfortunately I had a fracture in the femur and had to walk on crutches for12 weeks until it healed then strated to walk with one crutch the pain was allover until I did the second hip which was a complete success now after 18 month I get a sever thigh pain every time I over walk or travel or sit for a long time I did many x-rays and tests ...all tell that the muscles were too short and tight and need time last thing on new year's I danced one dance and ended up crying since then this pain is awful and very frustrating I take Tylenol and ibuprofen and muscle relaxant to ease the pain ....last thing my doctor said maybe I have stress shielding ..but I don't know what does that end up to so please be patient and will let you know what comes next. ..don't be pessimistic we will overcome that thigh pain whatever it takes live positively. ..good luck ....some bodies don't heal easily ...
