Migraines everyday, all day, for 9 months. Help!!

Remember your worst migraine. How much pain you were in and how you just couldn't do anything. That's how I am everyday.

Right so I'm a 20 year old female, I'm and student and work as a waitress part time.

So, I started with a headache on the 18th January this year, pain killers didn't touch it. Woke up the next day and still had a terrible headache.

I have a terrible headache all day, everyday, without fail. It's got to the point now that I'm stressed; fed up, hardly sleeping, can't concentrate at uni or any time really.

Please understand that the pain never goes, the headache never ends. I have literally had a migraine 24/7 for 9 months now.

I wear glasses (short sighted) but I know it's not my eyes causing the migraines.

I've cut out everything that's apparently supposed to aggravate headaches. Stop drinking caffeine, stop eating chocolate and cheese. No change in the headaches.

This continued for a week or two before I went to see my GP who referred me to a neurologist.

The first neurologist thought I had tension headaches caused by stress.

At this point, I wasn't stressed at all, not with uni or work, nothing. So I didn't quite understand this diagnosis.

Anyway he put me onto tablets called amitriptyline, which is an antidepressant, and told me to gradually increase my dosage up to 50mg a day. This didn't help at all, had horrible side affects.

I then saw another neurologist who diagnosed me with migraines, put me into Topamax, which are an anti epileptic drug meant to also treat migraines. I got my dose up to 100mg within 3 months and the side affects were horrible and didn't help at all.

I've had a CT scan, which was normal. Had an MRI scan, which was normal. I've also tried Imigran and some migraine medication that melts into your tongue, with no affect what so ever.

After trying all this, an idea was put forward that I could have raised intracranial hypertension, so yesterday I had a Lumbar Puncture. The pressure was at 19 and a half (apparently if its over 20 it's high), so it's not thought its that. The migraines were worse for a week after the lumbar puncture, I couldn't even sit up without being in agony and being sick. Spent a week in bed unable to move.

I've got another type of MRI scan booked for the end of this month that's apparently going to look at the veins/blood vessels in my head to see if there is a problem there.

I feel like I'm not being taken seriously now by doctors, because "there isn't anything to be worried about, like a tumour" as I'm always told! As much as I'm so very glad I don't have anything serious to be worried about, I hate spending everyday in so much pain that I can't function.

Please don't think I'm over reacting/attention seeking/whatever, but I am literally fed up and can't cope. I can't get a minute of relief, I'm constantly in pain (different variations of pain, but pain all the same). As I'm writing this I'm crying my eyes out because I haven't managed to sleep more than 3 hours a night in that past 4 days. I'm exhausted and depressed now. I've even told my GP that I am so depressed now, I have thought on more than one occasion of overdosing just to end this pain. And he literally turned me away saying he couldn't do anything. I feel so defeated.

If anyone has had this type of problem before or knows someone that has, please let me know.

Everyone on this thread of comments I hope you read this. I have had a nonstop headache for two years now. From the autumn of the year I started suffering with the condition I started taking natural vitamins I read through my hours of research could help prevent or help minimise headaches and migraines. Now, another year and a half from taking those tablets, headaches are mostly mild sometimes hardly there and if they are bad it is much less often. it is worth researching and trying because is natural so you've nothing to lose. The main vitamin is Magnesium. I take 500mg but some people take more. I also take 400mg of B2 daily. I also had a Vit D deficiency found by a neurologist so I take vitamin d daily (consider getting yourself checked for a vitamin d deficiency as it can cause all kinds of symptoms), and I take omega 3. Other vitamins I know have helped others are coq10 and also feverfew but I don't take those. I would also recommend taking each one for six weeks before taking another to see which one helps you. I wish I had done that! But yeah, please try the natural option because it's so much better than nasty medications that may or may not work. Even neurologists recommend B2 and magnesium so it should be more widely known about.

Admittedly, I still don't know what is wrong. I saw a private and NHS neuro both who said different things, but basically that they don't know. The doctors were very very dismissive. One wanted to diagnose me with fibromyalgia within one appointment. They also tried to get me on various meds and the last one I saw said she was concerned I would keep trying to find out what is wrong with me. She was very dismissive and I just felt so deflated, depressed, suicidal even. I think it is important to share information together, especially when everybody is struggling because lets face it, chronic and unknown illnesses are sou destroying. X

Oh my word! I feel for you . This is a horrible think that is happening to the both of us., to all of us on this forum!

It seems crazy to me that no one can help us.  Sometimes I think ..  It’s probably something so simple and bam we could get relief!  I too was suicidal. Until I got a bit of relief with amatryptaline....

I’m also thankful for having a job a job that I have to work I have to have great insurance in order to keep investigating on what is going on with me.   If I didn’t keep working I don’t think I would be here right now. I think if I just let myself lay In bed all day or on the couch it would be over...  I force yes force myself to try and keep doing things.  I think it has help a little.  Don’t get me wrong, I still can’t do near the things I used too .  But I don’t  just do nothing .....     I know we are going to conquer this!!!    I’m going to see if I can get an appointment with a tmj specialist.  I think I’m going to try and see if I can at least fix my ears then move from there.  I’ve been to every kind of doc. I’m going to start all over again from the beginning   I don’t know what else to do.

A few days ago I was on my knees asking god for help. Help to know what to do how can I help myself .  What can I tell the doctors so they will know what to do.    I don’t know if you are religious but I am. And I believe in the power of god.   I will keep you informed.   Please keep me informed!   I want to help you in anyway if I can.

Doctors say fibromyalgia when they can’t figure it out.    Doctors dont try and investigate what the problem with their patients  any more.  If they don’t know right off or within a couple of tries it’s not worth their time to investigate and solve it.  That kind of doctoring has gone out the window a long time ago. It’s sad really!  Very few do that now so if you find him or her keep them. Just finding one is hard.

    Becky,

I know you wrote this about five years ago. I’m going through the same thing now and so far it’s been a month. My body is already getting use to the pain killers and Advil and I’m worried it’ll get to a point where nothing works anymore and it’ll back track my life. Have you solved this problem? And if so please tell me how. Iv been in and out of the hospital for two weeks.

Hi Becky,  I had suffered so bad with migraines and Dr told me to cut out artificial ingredients, nitrates, cheese, etc., and none helped.  I noticed after eating cheese, any kind I would get a migraine and came across an article about raw cheese , so I ate raw cheese just about everyday and no migraines from cheese.

What helps keep my migraines at bay and other people I have spoken with, is magnesium and the best to enter the blood stream is through foods high in it, like pumpkin seeds (are the highest in the nut family) then sunflower seeds, etc.  I alway buy dry roasted from Trader Joes without the oils added.  I will have about 3-4 servings a day.

Some veggies are high as well, however I found the nuts work better and can also make nut butter out of them.  Almonds are important too, because of containing the vitamin Riboflavin that helps with migraines and it has a good number of magnesium in them.

A  pure magnesium spray  product that "Austra" sells is fantastic , it works and the company has great customer service.  Walmart does sell it online.

If I do get a migraine it is basically a silent one, the one without pain, where I just get weak, lightheaded, etc and goes away in about 10min to a few hours.

The migraine medication has never worked for me so I have "prednisone" that helps should I get a painful migraine.  It doesn't take it completely away after taking but it will alleviate the symptoms and then gone. As long as I keep up with enough magnesium everyday and the vitamin Riboflavian I'm good.

I hope you find soon what will be the most helpful to you.

Long time since you wrote how are you now? I can copy all your symptoms and treatment-apart from lumbar puncture-for my husband. He's also had Botox which didn't work. After three years treatment it's now diagnosed as NDPH. The neurologist discharged him six months ago with the instruction that "Mr R must find a way to cope with the pain." Unfortunately that hasn't yet happened.  I hope you've had better luck. Xx

I tried every medication for this and all my neurologist did was shrug and pass me around. I was suck so many times by so many needles that I still have marks. After more than 2 years of worthless treatments I finally decided to just deal with the pain on my own. I started working out and eating healthy and after a few months I began to feel betterit was almost a yearbefore i had any significant relief. I am not a unhealthy person my weight before all of this was normal and my exercise routine was good. I was healthy and there was no reason why i should have been having headaches. But after months of excercising and eating healthy i started to feel better. I had days of relief. I cut out sugar completely and now i excercise 2 times a day and afterall of this i have better days. I still get really bad headaches but they are manageable now. I hope this helps and if you have any questions i would be happy to answer.
