Mirtazapine withdrawal

Posted , 136 users are following.

Hey everyone,

I've been on Mirtazapine 30mg since Feb his year but I've had alot of problems with. Ear infections, burning mouth syndrome etc. so my Psychiatrist think's I should come of it. He told me to cut down to 15mg and only take them for a week and then just stop. So I finally stopped taking the 15mg on Mon night and I feel terrible.

It's not just my moods (my depression/anxiety had been great before coming off med), I physically feel really sick, been feeling extremely nauseated and last night couldn't sleep because I kept thinking I was going to throw up. Is this a normal reaction coming off mirtazapine?

Because my depression/anxiety had gotten alot better, we didn't feel the need to just take me off mirtazapine and put on on another drug because I thought I was cured. Plus, I don't want to take any more antidepressants at all really.

PLEASE, any help or advice you offer would be greatly appreciated because I'm really worried now and I don't want to have to go back to taking mirtazapine sad .

Will the withdrawal last long? How long will it take to fully get the tablets out of my system?

Please help,

thanks,

    Hi Dubai,

Can I ask why you gave up mirt?

    Sounds bad,

I would take the Xanax and inderal yes but be careful with the Xanax,

But it sounds like you need it,

I don't know anything about your other meds but hang in there,

    Things will get better,

I'm a month now off mirt completely and the withdrawal has been fine.( touch wood),and the inderal and benzo's have totally helped

    Good luck

    Kennybhoy,

Last April I fell into depression after suffering major health issues over 45 days ( unspecific infections of the stomach, colon, almost all of the GI system) the prolonged diagnosis, the deterioration of my health fulled by sever anxiety, lack of sleep, major weight loss. Lately my counselor, has a different theory; what happened to me was symptoms of depression, so depression came ahead of the health issues. Who knows!

I agreed to take Mirt or otherwise face the unknown.

I immediately noticed the Mirt working, but was still shaky of my experience, as I have progressed and since depression has lifted I agreed with my GP to come off. I have also eliminated many triggers such as anger, confrontations etc, but you apparently cant eliminate all triggers otherwise you cant live a normal life.

I am working on my shortcoming and accepting some of my weakness.

Throughout my life, my anxiety base line has been on the high side, so any major stress through my anxiety into crises mode.

Day 10, 2.5mg melatonin at 10, slept at 11.30, up 2.30 growling stomach, I managed to sleep till 6.30am, and again painful stomach growling. morning anxiety is less, some nausea, lets see how the day progresses. I am off work since Tue.

Sorry for the long reply, I am sure some of what I wrote can be of help to others.

    Dear all,

I was looking for remeron withdrawal support and found this sire.

I was on remeron two months ago for depression that I could not explain why. It helped the depression but

after three weeks it stopped working for my insomnia. I have horrible insomnia since. I was up all night and not feeling sleepy at all all night even I am tired. The Dr. did not give me any good reason. My psychiatry Dr. Gave me Xanax to help mg sleep. After I found out it was a very addictive drug, I stopped after two weeks in early Feb.

So I decided to cut remeron back from 30 mg to 15 mg after two months on 30 mg. after 3 weeks on 15 mg I cut back to 7.5 mg at bedtime. At 7.5 mg I felt the sedative effect again and sleep ok for 3 nights but that sedative effect went away and no longer helping my sleep. So I stopped taking the remeron and it has been almost two weeks since.

I am not sure these are the withdrawal symptoms, but I experience palpitation often during the day and somewhat mild appetite issues. My sleep is not good but I am taking some herbal tea to help. Anyone has experience like mine and how long would it last. I try to stay positive but sometime the anxiety of not getting quality sleep really affecting me.

Hi 156NH, the palpitations are classic signs of withdrawel, and as for sleep it may take some time but you will find it again, it took me a few weeks to get it back. when you do get it back, you will start to feel better slowly but surely. its that old saying "Time heals all"

Read back on the comments from the beggining, it helps to make you realize you are not alone and strung out by yourself. also there is good advice, but i do recommend doing research online before taking the advice as a precaution.

All the best and get back to it soon, you will get better : )

Day 11, slept OK woke up with major stomach pain around 7am, used the toilet and went back to sleep till 10. I woke up feeling fatigued and nauseated. I had three loose motion between morning and early evening. started feeling much better in the evening (why does this continue to happen, bad mornings and good evening almost throughout my withdrawal period.

Day 12, slept OK, woke up at closer to 8, high morning anxiety, tight arms that had tingling feeling ( what is this?) that keeps happening almost every other day this past week. I had a painful bowl movement after breakfast. I feel fatigued and nauseated.

my energy level seems low. Other symptoms, Irritable, headache.

Guys may I get some thoughts on the following:

Adrenaline surges early in the morning.

Tight arms with tingling feeling right when I wake up, sometimes it wakes me up.

I am feeling better as the day goes by, like I said my PMs are much better than my AMs.

    Thanks

I am guessing that like myself withdrawing from Mirt. has been causing increased dream activity, and probably lots of bad dreams and nightmares. As a general rule your adrenalin is at its heightened in the early hours up unto around 8am and if you have been experiencing fear etc. in your dreams you r fight or flight response has been pumping you full of extra adrenalin. This is a normal response for your adrenal glands to make for fear. RESULT.........you wake up with adrenal fatigue (or as I would put it, hit by a truck).

I just had some blood testing don to see if there was any other reason as to why I am still feeling so exhausted and after drinking the glucose syrup for the tolerance test I was hit by the same truck and was so exhausted that I needed to lay down as I was falling asleep in the clinic. I am a little hypoglycaemic but the big thing that was worked out was that my adrenal went to town and then I was overloaded.

A few hours later I was back to the same level of tiredness that I was at before the test, but that reaction was dramatic.

Learned a lot, but my doctor is unsure if I am adrenal fatigued because of dropping down the Mirt. or adrenal l fatigue is causing me more problems getting off this stuff.

Still working out how to assist my adrenal glands, and the only thing that I have come up with yet is meditation. I will give that a go.

Other than that, there are some herbs that may assist but I think I will go to a trusted naturopath to get them as after looking on the net I think it might be hit and miss with the over the counter preparations.

I would just like to wake up without this headache. Managed to get rid of it after last adjustment with Chiro, but it was back the next morning after the bad night of sleep and bad dreams.

Food for thought, best of luck tonight.

    Danae,

Thank you for taking the time, I hope what we share here becomes beneficial to those trying to quit any sort of AD.

I hope you feel better soon & I hope your adrenaline is all fine & all what we are experiencing will eventually dissapear with time & patience.

No doubts that these meds are extremely powerful & our bodies differ in their reactions to them being introduced to them or being withdrawn from.

I was able to fall a sleep OK using melatonin 2.5, but as always I am up few hours later, but manage to fall back to sleep but then up every hour until I finally give up. Not sure whats causing this strange pattern. I felt less adrenaline surge during the night, but again I experience the tingling and numbness in my arms from the elbow down. This is becoming an every day issue. its gone once I am up and moving. energy is an issue, I felt out of breath just going downstairs and up.

Something must be done to end the suffering of the tens of million of people using such medicines.

We are able to afford sending an expedition to Mars & we have been advancing a lot in the field of medicine yet we fail when it comes to Mental illness.

Day 13, used Melatonin slept from 11.30 till 5, then interrupted sleep up at 8, tingling arms, tired but calm, nauseated, went for a massage (my body was on fire), felt better by 3pm and around 7 till I slept I had the best evening since coming off.

Day 14 slept at 12 up at 6.30. nausea , no appetite, very high anxiety and low mood, low energy, disappointing big time considering how I felt last evening.

    Hi Dubai

I'm on day 21 and still struggling with the same withdrawal symptoms that you are describing. I have the nausea, headaches, very disturbed sleep, tingling in lower arms combined with weakness, high anxiety and low mood. I'm struggling with memory issues and concentration. It's interesting that you say your body has felt like its on fire as I have had this too. I usually feel the cold all the time so to go from cold to burning is very uncomfortable.

Last Monday was day 14 and that day was very good for me. I actually felt quite 'normal' for the first time in a long time. I was so pleased and felt very optimistic that I was getting through the withdrawal. The next day though, all the symptoms came back, I felt so ill and so disappointed. I've been struggling ever since and have not felt well at all. From reading yours and other posts, I'm sure it is the withdrawal, but how much longer is this going to last? Does anyone know? It's affecting every area of my life. I've tried exercising, eating healthily, keeping well hydrated etc but nothing has helped. I just want to get my life back. Hope you and everyone else are finding some relief from it all.

    Veejay99,

Thank you for sharing and sorry for what you are going through.

I thought I was well prepared to fight the withdrawals, I have tapered slowly, but maybe not extra slowly, I got Melatonin for any rebound insomnia, xanax in case things get out of control and Propranolol, while I have been using the Melatonin post night 6, I haven't used the later much.

The morning Nausea, Anxiety and bloating that wont ease until I use the toilet, and if its time, I have no choice but rush to the toilet.

What are you taking to help relief some of the discomfort?

How are your evening? mine are way better than morning, I am more calmer, good appetite.

I have been on a great diet even before stopping Mirt and I am staying the course.

Have you gone back to your GP?

I hope you feel better soon.

Day-15, some interrupted sleep, but overall, it was OK, its strange how just right before falling asleep my body jerks softly but enough to pull me off sleep for few more minutes. The adrenaline surges were almost gone, I hope this continues going forward. I woke up with a sore throat along with flu like symptoms, heavy brain fog, nausea and some anxiety.

Thank you for your response. It's so helpful. I couldn't reply last night as my headache ended up as a migraine so I couldn't function. However I did sleep a bit better last night, still disturbed sleep but a longer spell asleep. I do feel better for it today. My head feels lighter and more clear so I hope this will continue through the day.

I don't take any other medication. Drs here don't like to prescribe further meds for withdrawal. I've had such a bad time with meds that I would be very reluctant to try anything else now. The mornings are always the worst. It takes most of the day for my head to clear and I agree that most evenings are better. I don't have much of an appetite at the best of times so the nausea and stomach problems have made this worse. I've forced myself to eat and to eat healthily to help my body through the withdrawal as the symptoms are worse when I haven't been able to eat much.

You have done so well and I hope your other meds will continue to help you.

I just wish I could do something else for the anxiety which keeps returning and causing me so many problems. Medication just made everything worse. I do yoga and relaxation but when anxiety hits out of nowhere, nothing seems to stop the adrenaline rush etc.

I hope all of you have a good day.

Thought that I might try some melatonin as you guys have mentioned it but can only buy homoeopathic here in Aust. without prescription.

Am really feeling sick and tired of this never ending cycle of depression, medication and symptoms and it is pushing me past the point of my endurance let alone severely depleting my bank account.

I am presuming, as this is a UK site, that you probably live there and have access to the NHS unlike Australia which is a user pays system.

Sound like I am bleating, and I guess that I probably am, but I am just so over this headache that just will not leave so I think everything is peeing me off.

It is now nearly 8pm my time so I will be off to bed in a few more hours, trusty melatonin in hand and use all of my optimism to think about waking up in the morning having had some restful sleep.

Hoping that the day is a good one for anyone reading this... Danae
