Mirtazapine withdrawal

Hey everyone,

I've been on Mirtazapine 30mg since Feb his year but I've had alot of problems with. Ear infections, burning mouth syndrome etc. so my Psychiatrist think's I should come of it. He told me to cut down to 15mg and only take them for a week and then just stop. So I finally stopped taking the 15mg on Mon night and I feel terrible.

It's not just my moods (my depression/anxiety had been great before coming off med), I physically feel really sick, been feeling extremely nauseated and last night couldn't sleep because I kept thinking I was going to throw up. Is this a normal reaction coming off mirtazapine?

Because my depression/anxiety had gotten alot better, we didn't feel the need to just take me off mirtazapine and put on on another drug because I thought I was cured. Plus, I don't want to take any more antidepressants at all really.

PLEASE, any help or advice you offer would be greatly appreciated because I'm really worried now and I don't want to have to go back to taking mirtazapine sad .

Will the withdrawal last long? How long will it take to fully get the tablets out of my system?

Please help,

thanks,

Star

I came off Mirtrazipine some time ago, it took some doing I can tell you but I did it, I think you seem to find an inner strength from somewhere although at the time it feels an never ending struggle to get through each day, but keep going cos it gets easier I promise 😄

Hi ya it took about 4 wks although it seemed like 4 months! I was also coming off venlafaxin as well so had double whammy, but got there in the end, I was on both of them for about 5 years.

I found it best to just take each day as it came not think about the next one.😄

      Hi Julie;

I was on 1.87 mg for 6 weeks then to 1.7mg for 4 weeks then to 1.2 for week then to 1mg for week then jumped off. In jan I was on 3.75 but I found out I was a slow metabolizer through a gene DNA test. That explained why I was revving up after being on the same dose for awhile. Maybe that explains why at 7 weeks off today I'm still having a horrific time with anxiety particularly in the mornings. It's so bad I start to wonder if it will ever end. But as I had mentioned there are quite a few pep that came off mirtz that did not see improvement until completeing there third month. I may also have some underling benzo WD issues from coming off 7 months ago,but I feel this WD is much more intense and horrific so I tend to think its mainly the mirtz.

      thx Miami

Deb good advice! Sometimes I do a minute at time cause this is so intense.

@ 7 weeks out my sx have fluctuated from sometimes a period of every other day doing better to constant misery for days. You start to wonder if it WD. I never knew what anxiety and depression was till I came off of z drug and the benzo they used to taper off with. Now this with mirtz is much more intense and way longer than expected.

hope to see some relief soon!

I don't think that a small dose couses no withdrawal as my GP was telling me. My highest dose was 7.5mg and if it did the job - I mean made me function much better - there is no basis to think that withdrawal wouldn't happen. Doctors don't have much experience with Mirt but I've found many unhappy people who can't quit it but when they do they quit the doctor that prescribed it too!

       It will get better!

Yes! And I also have muscle and joints pain which sometimes scares me if it's something more serious but I did not have it before Mirt and came accross people suffering similar pains. My neurologist said it's possible that it's caused by the drug and he's the only person that admitted how these drugs can mess up with you.

Just been away on holiday and what a difficult time I had, either crying or wanting to go home, unable to eat and all shaky in the morning, had to take sleeping pills to be able to function during the day. So unfair on family. Will now be postponing our next trip as even the thought of going makes me anxious. I take a small dose of sertraline 25mg in the mornings for two weeks now to take me trough the withdrawal. It's not working yet and I'll give it one more week. I wish I didn't have to take anything but was in such a mess and have two little children to look after and the shool finished now so it's all day on my toes.

Nothing lasts forever, not even a pain or worry! We just have to be strong for a bit longer smile

1980 it takes all we've got and then some! Keeping busy might be overwhelming but does help keep you distracted.

Yes The anxiety and mood swings are horrific.

I think its wise to hold off on travel plans till things settle , is just so hard when you have no idea how much longer.

Keeping busy does help take your mind off how you're feeling, trouble is I think we become very inward, when we notice a symptom it then becomes our main thought which in turn makes it worse, so doing anything to take your mind away from that is good....hard I know though!

julie... The thunder etc was scary we had it Thursday night the worst we've ever had I think and so humid it's hard to sleep at night isn't it?
