Mirtazapine withdrawal

Hey everyone,

I've been on Mirtazapine 30mg since Feb his year but I've had alot of problems with. Ear infections, burning mouth syndrome etc. so my Psychiatrist think's I should come of it. He told me to cut down to 15mg and only take them for a week and then just stop. So I finally stopped taking the 15mg on Mon night and I feel terrible.

It's not just my moods (my depression/anxiety had been great before coming off med), I physically feel really sick, been feeling extremely nauseated and last night couldn't sleep because I kept thinking I was going to throw up. Is this a normal reaction coming off mirtazapine?

Because my depression/anxiety had gotten alot better, we didn't feel the need to just take me off mirtazapine and put on on another drug because I thought I was cured. Plus, I don't want to take any more antidepressants at all really.

PLEASE, any help or advice you offer would be greatly appreciated because I'm really worried now and I don't want to have to go back to taking mirtazapine sad .

Will the withdrawal last long? How long will it take to fully get the tablets out of my system?

Please help,

thanks,

Star

I am, too, trying to come off mirtazepine after 5 years usage. I have reduced down to 30 mg and now reduced to alternate days but am finding it impossible to sleep. I have not slept at all tonight. I am therefore considering changing this to 15 mg a night instead, then reducing after 3-4 weeks to 7.5 mg a night. Has anyone else had any sucess doing it this way? I understand that after that it is wise to reduce more slowly using the liquid form. Any help or advice would be much appreciated, thank you smile

I am replying to the conversation in the hope that it might help someone else. I have been on Mirtazepine 45mg for 8 years. I was very unwell when I started them, but once stable and much improved health wise I have been able to start a PhD and work full time as well. Last year I had a conversation with my GP, as he was saying that I ought to think about coming off them. I didn't feel that was a good time for me however, so continued to take them. Last week, having been so busy that I was only averaging 5hrs in bed a night and realising that it was not a good idea to take the Mirtazepine and then only have 5hrs sleep I stopped taking them. Just like that. I have had a vague headache, and vague nausea, but to be honest I have been too busy to pay them much attention. I have now been 6 days without and so far so good. So unless it is suddenly going to get much worse, coming off has been easier than going on! So if the time is right for you (very important) then bite the bullet and go for it - keep busy so you don't have time to think about side effects - and here's to a bright, healthy future!

      Hi there,

I was wondering how you're doing now? If coming off it wasn't too bad for you? I really do hope so. Starting the ride tomorrow by dropping one day every two weeks. Last time it hit me after 3 weeks and I only lasted 2 months without it. Two terrible months x

      Hi,

would be interested to know how you're doing now?

Every time i try to come off mirtazapine, i find the worst symptoms are 2-3 weeks after the last tablet. The nightmares are so bad, i've always ended up going back on them. Am down to 15mgs now.

Hey sat, don't worry too much, it's crap we know. We have been where you are now. Either get off it, or contact your doc. Coming off the med is real sh*t, but your body will find itself again. I've never had probes coming off anti d's but mirt I did. You are not going bonkers, in time your nervous system will get back to normal. Contact your doc and get off that weird and nasty drug. Like Bailey, I came off cold turkey, so we do know what you are going through. You will get better, I'm also fine now, and you will too. That med should be banned, it comes with way too many side effects. Take care you will pull through.

Hi I was on Mirtazphine 45 mg, it made me put on weight really quickly. . I tired to cut out Mirtazapine out and go straight to cymbalta. Don't do this, bad withdrawals, this is a very slow process to wean off this medication.

I have been on 30 mg for 1 year and a half and i am attempting to go down to 15 mg's with the doctors guidance and also a psyhcologists guidance.

Here's my story, I don't have depression issues, mt was prescribed to me for my GP states it helps you sleep, I've had insomnia for years, affecting my job, can't sleep, well I was on 135 mgs daily, NIGHTMARE, I noticed changes in my attitude, edgy, anxiety, it helped my sleeping temporarily, then I too have ear problems and it caused depression as being on such a high dose ( my brother is a docter, not my doctor) but he flipped when I found out what was prescribed for insomnia, he told me as a doctor that mt at that dose is considered an anti psych med at that level, if prescribed for insomnia my dose she be at about 30 mgs. So it played with the dopamine in my brain and I was a mess, I in the last two months cut my dose to 30 mg all on my own and wow I can't even explain the hell I'm in, it'd HORRIBLE, I have no choice as I lost medical coverage and the script is over $300 a month at the high dose, it caused my Jaw to lock up while talking , my brother knew immediately, being a doctor, he said your on my and ii said how do you know that and replied, your personality change, the licking of my jaw when speaking, I was like OMG, how do I get off this and function, my brother told me that any medication prescribed by my GP other than an antibiotic, call him before filling it so he can advise me. Needless to say its been a few months and I'm still in withdrawal and it sucks, AVOID THIS MED or any other med in the same category such as trazedone, seraquil, all in the same class , before careful all and get a second opinion always

I was put on Mirtzapine 15mg over five yeras ago tp help me recover from Alcoholism.

I, too, was told that this drug was NOT addictive.

I have not had any alcohol for two years so I am more than familiar with 'Cold Turkey'

I am now retired and had no valid reason to be depressed or anxious so no need for Mirt and having read the many comments on this forum I need to rid myself of this terrible drug.

My GP will just say OK stop taking it and get on with it!

The general feeling here that it is not as simple as that?

I want to start the process today but need your advice as to how I should go about itand what I can expect?
