MIS operation cancelled!

I was booked in to have my bunions removed in January 2015. My surgeon's secretary has just phoned me to book me an appointment to discuss my surgery as he has decided not to perform MIS proceedures for at least the next two years but he will be happy to op using traditional open surgery. I am gutted. Anyone out there that has had MIS surgery? I need some reviews to help me make up my mind what to do. The surgeon said he will refer me to another surgeon if I insist on MIS. I am having op under private med (BUPA).

Hi Bev. I had MIS two years ago and although working in the NHS where they didn't do MIS had decided to have bunion and hammer toe done this way to save infection avoid deeper surgery and have a much quicker recovery.  I am so pleased I did.  Mr Joel Vernois at Haywards Heath (Sussex Orthopaedic Treatment Centre) did it and it was on the NHS. Excellent Centre and such kind staff.  Hope this helps with your decision - good luck.

    Oh Bev

How disappointing. I have not had MIS but had private surgery first time round and nhs this time around. scars do fade in time. Do you know why he us not doing this procedure? If he us inexperienced then is best you are referred elsewhere.

Where do you live? At least this gives u time to research for a good surgeon

So sorry to Bev to hear that.  Just when you are mentally prepared and then have the rug pulled from under your foot!  Pun intended!

I am having a bilateral MIS in 2 weeks time in Brighton (Mr Redfern).  I saw him last week and was most impressed. Added to which he has performed over a 1,000 MIS procedures (probably more since) and he also operated on my girlfriend as well.  He or Joel Vernois are the guys to go to!  Good luck Bev and do keep us all posted!

Thank you for all your posts and support. I'm in Birmingham and can't find another surgeon that does MIS for bunions. I wish Mr Redfern was local to me. I might end up traveling to London. But MIS does seem like the way to go.

Bev - I am travelling from Abu Dhabi to see Mr Redfern; having the surgery in Brighton and staying in a friends flat in Bournemouth for my recovery.  I really think it is worth it!! I will keep you posted!

Wow. And I'm moaning about traveling a hundred miles! I'm going to look into this. Mr Redferns name keeps cropping up over and over. You are very lucky to get him.

      Great news Sandispoon!

I'm so happy for you. So who's your surgeon and where are you having it done?

Hi Jazzy - David Redfern - he is the guy to go to; he operated on my girlfriend last year and she is very happy.  I'm having mine done at the Montefiore in Brighton.  There are other hospitals that he works out of also.  Will keep you posted!

    Hi Bev,

I'd agree with the other posters.  I had bilateral MIS bunion surgery 1 week ago and the recovery so far has been a breeze compared to what I expected.  Given what I have read about the open surgery, I think you will be far better off to have a MIS surgery with an experienced surgery.  Like some of the other posters, I saw Mr Redfern - I'd suggest it would be worth your trip to see him in London.

    Good luck!

Well I've had my consultation with my surgeon (private) who has convinced me to let him do none MIS. He said he had been to a conference where many surgeons had had 2nd thoughts on MIS. He personally has done over 30 MIS ops with no problems but said that the only difference with MIS and traditional was the size of the scar and open surgery is less likely to have complications. A docter freind of his had both feet done MIS and complications after meant that she had to had plates in bothher feet. He showed me on my feet where he will cut and it seems quite low down so scar should not be visible. Still getting the colly wobbles though. This sugeon is a specialist that has even devised a replacement toe proceedure that is currently being trialed so he is not afraid of innovative ideas. Just believes that there is a higher risk with MIS then open. Ifeel a sick. Come on allyou none MIS peeps tell my it's not the end of the world.

I've had both, traditional surgery on lefty and MIS on righty. I'm only 11 weeks in to the MIS one, but I would say the man difference is its takes twice as long to recover from traditional surgery and it hurts lots more.

You know Bev - you must go with the surgeon you feel most comfortable with. There will always be different schools of thought particularly with things medical. Go with you gut feel! I felt very comfortable with my surgeon which is why I decided to go for MIS next Monday!!   Wishing you  all the best with whichever method you choose!

I find it odd that a professional consultant would be put off MIS just by going to a conference & because a colleague had a bad experience!  It sounds as though it's put him off so should you be going to this man!  It might be an idea to get a second opinion!  I would be feeling sick too!  It's your gut feeling so find someone else with more experience.  You've probably had this problem for years so what's a few more weeks to find someone more experienced?  All operations carry risks and I've seen some of you have problems since being operated on!  It's not something to rush into, check out your options. & good luck!   I would want someonewho's done more than 30 ops which is not much...

That's the problem he is very experienced. The 30 odd ops was just MIS he has done loads of traditional ops. It took me ages to find this guy.
