Mortons Neuroma

I had surgery 9 days ago to remove 2 neuromas in my left foot.  It is still very painful and I eventually went back to the dressing clinic yesterday to see if it was a problem with the dressing sticking to the wound.  On removing it it was found that one of my incisions had come apart and that I had an infection for which they gave me anti biotics.  Anyone else had this problem?

Hi im week 4 after surgery to remove a 27mm nueroma. I had bad infection and extreme swelling. Im having severe nerve pain. But infection nearly all gone and still in heel boot, but coping well. Feels like a have a lump under foot but think thats just from surgery . I ended up with a deep ulcer where bottom stitch was from swelling.

Hi Tanya  Did you have surgery from the bottom of the foot?  Mine was from the top.  I also get nerve pain but am more worried about the infection at the moment.

Mine was from the top. What size was your nueroma? The nerve pain got really bad week 3. My infection settled but i was so worried ibhad bright yellow fluod for 2 weeks then lots of gunk. Not much now. It gets worse before it gets better. But hopefully will be worth the ordeal.

I don't know the size I wasn't told but I had two so two incisions. I have just started anti biotics so hope they clear it. Where did you have yours done?

Oh gosh I'm in the UK. It's the same the whole world over then!

Sure is. Amazing finding someone on the otherside of the world with same foot problem haha

Don't feel so good today. The antibiotics have upset my stomach so have to stop taking them. Just waiting for hospital to ring me back about infection now. Don't know what's worse foot pain or nausea🙁

Its a battle but hopefully it will be worth it. I have been told that not all surgeries give a lot of relief. Can end up with more pain. Hang in there. Think about wearing decent shoes for once 😊

Hi Tanya  Just wondered how you were doing?  Walking around normally yet, how about the nerve pain?

Hi Lesley. Im going great. The ulcer on top basically gone. Nerve pain gone. Walking good. Just slight pain under toes when I walk. Off to specialist tomorrow to hopefully be out of heal boot.. how yours going?

Hi Tanya. Were you on anti biotics and if so which ones did they give you? I only ask because coincidentally there was an article in my paper about the tablets I was given which really worried me. Apparently they are really strong and I wondered if they were usually given for our type of infection.

Hi I've been told I have two 20 mm neuroma's on both feet. I had steroid injections which lasted about two weeks, with a bit of break through pain. My feet felt almost normal and pain free. My surgeon has now said he will operate on one foot at at time and is going to do the left one first, as this is my worst foot. Then he will do my right one. I had my 4th knee replacement in October last year, on my right knee and still have a lot of pain around the knee and has worsened my flat foot, causing pain in my right ankle too. I really need this done, but am worried to how much I will really need to rely on my right leg whilst my left foot is healing. I do have crutches, but will this be enough support in the first couple of weeks? Be glad to hear what you both think. Thanks in advance Julie. X

      Hi Julie

I didnt have crutches and managed to get about walking very carefully mostly on my heel.  Luckily I havent an issue with my other foot/knee so don't know how I would have managed if I did.  I do think you have to rely on your good foot when standing though, and going up and down stairs.  I didn't really move about a lot for the first couple of weeks and sat with my foot up, but there are times, obviously, that you need to.  It has taken about two and half weeks for my foot to feel better, (but I did have an infection in the wound), and although still swollen, still can't fit a normal shoe, I can walk on it. Let us know how you get on.  Good luck!

Lesley thank you for quick reply, I just keep thinking if I can get through 4 knee replacements, two on each knee, then this op should be a doddle! Lol. Though I know I shouldn't be complacent. I was practically bed bound for the first six weeks after my last replacement and recovery has been hard this time around. I'm only 50 and have so many things going on with my health, if I real them off, I sound like a right hypochondriac! Lol. I can't take anti inflammatory meds due to stomach problems, so it can take swelling to go quite a while. How long did the surgery take and we're you a day case? X

I was just a day case was home by 3pm after arriving at 7am so not bad. I think the actual op was only about 40mins.  I didnt take any anti inflammatorys, wasnt given them.  I think the best thing is to keep your foot elevated as much as you can to stop the swelling.

Poor you, you have really gone through it.

Hi Julie. Goodluck with your surgery. I only used churches for a few days i think. But heel boot just came off. I had a bit of internal damage though. And im walking ok now. Just a slight limp and discomfort and if i overdo it, agony that night.

Hi Tanya, I'm still waiting for a date but thank you. What was your internal damage if I may ask?I do worry about the numb toes I keep hearing about. I know I need this done, but is the surgery the right way to go also? It's a lot to weigh upon a night like tonight I'm in quite a bit of pain, even on resting and I think yes the surgery will be worth it but there's not a lot of reviews online to read. Mostly people tend to write in when there's a problem or things haven't gone the way they should have. Glad to hear your doing well and on the right road to recovery. I was told my neuromas are 20 mm big. X

Hi. Nerve damage and was pressed against artery. Was losing circulation. Mine was 27 x 11mm . They had to cut a fair bit out around. Toes are numb. But they where beforehand from its size. I got used to numbness a long time ago and hardly notice it. Im feeling really good considering and walking ok in slippers

      Hi Jules

I think you are right that people only post if they have a problem. There are probably thousands who have this op with no problem whatsoever.

If you are in constant pain it will be worth it.

My 3rd and 4th toes are numb which feels a bit odd but getting used to it. They also tingle when, for instance, the duvet touches them so maybe they will gradually repair.

Let us know how you get on.

Lesley, the pain as you know can have different ranges. But there is always an underlying pain or sensation even when it's in the lower range. Can't remember the last time they felt normal without a problem. Can the sensation come back in your toes as I've learnt with my knee op that even up to two years later, the feeling can come back, not sure if that's the case with removing the Neuromas. Also did they remove your nerve that the Neuromas was attached to or just the Neuroma?

I haven't had my date yet but they said probably about 18 weeks, which should be in August, then the right foot around Xmas. The amount of times I've been laid up at Xmas and hubby has had to do Xmas dinner! Lol. Planned really lol. X X

As far as I know they just removed 2 neuromas, no one really told me anything and said to speak to the surgeon at my 6 week check which is 9 June.

I expect it depends on how much damage was done to the nerve as to whether you get the feeling back, but small price to pay if the other pain is gone. Fingers crossed

Yes fingers crossed for you. Always a good idea to write down what you would like to ask, that way you don't come out of the appt think "oh I forgot to ask". Especially when sometimes their in a hurry to get through their clinic list. Not too long to wait now. X
