Muscle/Tendon Pain with Hypothyroidisn

Posted , 67 users are following.

I have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism for 4 years now and am still struggling with my endocrinologist to get my dose right. The last few months I have been suffering with severe pain in my shoulder - which a physio says could be related to my thyroid problem. I thought others might like to be aware that an under-active thyroid can cause muscle and joint pain - I certainly did not realise. I have been reading the info on this site and now I can connect other things like stiffness and difficulty walking upstairs at times, odd pains in other joints - knees, hips and back ache.

I'm so grateful to have stummbled onto this blog. I have been fiendishly searching the internet for answers as to why I feel the wayvi do. I've always suspected my thyroid, but after reading so many patient testimonies I am totally convinced and relieved that; one, I'm hypothyroid and two, that for the first time I don't feel alone or crazy. All of these dicussions sound like a mirror of my symptoms. The symptoms that have definitely rendered me almost incapable of most daily activities are the muclscle/joint aches and pain and as one person here described as feeling 100 years old. That is my daily description of myself. The fatigue is ruthless and I struggle just to just about anything. I have good days and on those days I do things that make me like I used to, clean, laundry, basically moving around and the next day I pay for it! It's almost like I can't move. I have an appointment today to see my pcp due to an enlargement in my thyroid and hopefully some relief is offered. I just want to thank all of you for sharing your story, well out story and hopefully someone searching the internet looking for the answers stummbled upon this discussion and finally doesn't feel alone or dismissed anymore! God bless all of you on your road to feeling "normal" again!

I was dx in 2009 (but quite possibly had it since 95) and I've had to adjust my med and/or dosage I bet 10 times. Unfortunately the body isn't a static thing and what used to work needs tweaks. Currently I'm on 2 g of desiccated thyroid as I need t3 and t4, and my insurance can't get their act together with compounding meds which I was on for a few years. Even the symptoms change into new fun adventures. Currently I'm dealing with muscle pain in my back and shoulder, stiffness in my hip, which got triggered after exercising, and not that particularly vigorous week of it either. It can get overwhelmingly frustrating, especially since my job is physically demanding. Going to see a pain specialist and physical therapy, hoping that puts me back together so I can get on with things. Trying to let go of the thought I'll be a weight lifter and runner again. Anyway no question really, just thanks for listening. It's been a really challenging month.

Amy, I have Hashimoto hypothyroidism and I just stopped taking my synthetic meds. It only has T4. I started taking Lugol's Ioidine and Selenium. I'm not having the pain in my legs now. Lugol's has iodine for T4 and Iodide for T3. Selenium helps the T3. You might want to read "Dr David Brownstein – Iodine: Why You Need It, Why You Can’t Live Without It"

So, are there any solutions for hypothyroidism? I have heard a lot of complaints, mine are similar

But it seems as if there aren't any solutions. I quit levo due to severe depression which did go away. I weened off thr

Levo which I am glad for that. I do not know what is worse, under active thyroid or other symptoms. I chose no depression. I

Haven't told my PCP and will hold off with that. So, anyone have solutions?

God bless and thanks for your time.

      Tammy,

I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's a few months ago.  I have been experiencing severe muscle and joint pain for 9 months.  I previously became a vegan and the pain went away in 3 weeks.  I've been doing an Elimination Diet for about a month.(check Hashimoto's Protocol diet). Will have blood work done next week and then start bringing food back in to see what causes the inflammation.  I still have pain but I might start taking supplements to help with managing thyroid as I would like to avoid being on meds.  I will let you know how it goes.  Selenium and Zinc are suppose to help.

I can help you all. I have severe lower leg pain. There are quite if few issues. First is as thyroid patients, we are severely magnesium deficient. The pain indicates that you need high doses of magnesium citrate. About 800-1200 a day till pain subsides. Also calcium, zinc and vitamin D and iron, b12. Also the pain indicates that your under medicated. I take synthroid and nature thyroid as needed to alleviate symptoms. You have to be careful do you don't over Medicare yourself. I'm not a doctor. This is not medical advice. Only suggestions. Also anti inflammatories help.  I hope this helps someo.

I understand totally! I was diagnosed 4 years ago. I actually am diagnosed with Graves Disease. After being on Methomasole for 18 months and no changes my doctor decided it was time for me to do the Radioactive Iodine Treatment, which work well for about six months while we tried to regulate my med Levothoroid. I went off of it for 6 weeks a year after treatment, and my levels where still high! You guys keep me in prayer, we are doing round two of the Radioactive Iodine Treatment.
