My colonoscopy was difficult because I have kinks in my colon, anyone else have this?

Hello everyone, I have just joined and am so glad to have found a lovely group where we can get support, advice and share different experiences of diverticular disease. I started having symptoms in July this year, bloating, pain in my tummy and back pain. Then, in September I had excruciating pain upper left handside under my ribs which had me doubled over. My doctor ordered a colonoscopy which I had in October. I was sedated, but unfortunately my procedure was difficult, my colon apparently has kinks. So they had to give me gas and air, then the nurse had to press down hard on my tummy to try and flatten the kinks. I left the hospital feeling like I had just done 10 rounds in a boxing ring!! I never, ever want to have a colonoscopy again! Anyway, I received a letter from the hospital stating that the investigation has shown some diverticular disease and they were going to leave my on-going care with my family doctor. Is there any need to see the doctor, as I am keeping a food diary, cut out out all fruit with seeds and pips. Also, I am taking 1 sachet of Fybrogel a day and touch wood, everything seems to be ok. Thank you.

No I don't take buscopan but I suppose I really should as I do get a lot of heartburn. I did take meds for reflux which I don't anymore but may have to start taking them again. It does make you very scared to eat anything and I have lost weight which I couldn't really afford to do. I don't eat cakes, chocolate, bread, red meat, pastry of any form so my diet is very bland so not a good person to go for a meal with in fact I don't eat out anymore sadly.

My daughter doesn't understand at all she is always saying come here or why can't you go there. When I say it's because my stomach is off she goes that's just an excuse. I said I hope you have this when you are my age then you will understand what I went through

Hi Maureen, yes the consultant confirmed that I have got diverticular disease. Fortunately, they didn't find any polyps. They also took tissue biopsies to test for microscopic colitis, thankfully that came back clear. I have recently started taking a probiotic tablet daily, which seems to help. I also tried Aloe Vera juice, but had to stop taking that after 3 days as it gave me terrible indigestion.

Hi moureen. I know what you mean All my daughter ever says is its old age IBS I tried to explain DD to her but she said. Is that all it is. I loved to eat out and really enjoyed my food but not now. I have gone down 2 sizes since last September at least that's a good thing. A colonoscopy wouldn't pick up IBS my GP said I had from the symptoms. Pain bloating going from being on the toilet all the time and not being able to go.

Hi Linda I had a similar experience with horrendous pain under my left ribs radiating to my back I had CT scan which showed I had a collapsed colon a colonoscopy was ordered but for some reason the collapsed colon had corrected itself I was diagnosed with diverticulitis and that was it no antibiotics and sent back to my gp. I have managed my DD with the help of this lovely site and so far touch although still in pain from time to time I have avoided antibiotics. I have changed my diet and no longer eat read meat or anything that is hard to digest, I to take fybogel daily. I think that as long as you arnt in pain or constipated you should be fine as long as you stick to foods that don't aggravate your colon especially as diverticulitis didn't show up which means your colon is infected. I still get my pain on the left side under my ribs whereas a lot of people get lower left sided pain

Hi Christine, I guess its a lot to do with trial and error regarding what we can eat. I am keeping a food diary, so hopefully it won't be too long before I can eliminate the culprit foods. I know fruit containing seed and pips are a no no as are tomatoes, multiseeded bread.
