    Hi,

It might be worth her seeing an optician to check for pressure behind the eyes. I would also recommend you insist on a full blood test to check for signs of vitamin, iron and folic acid fefficiencies. Your daughter is at the age where hormone imbalances can occur if her body is not absorbing the nutrients it needs, even if she is eating healthily. Talking to a good local pharmacist could help while you're waiting to arrange this.

    Good luck

    Hi,

Also, does anyone in the family have gluten intolerance? Gluten ataxia can also cause these symptoms. Worth reading up on this to see if the symptoms are similar to gluten/carbohydrate intolerance.

No1in the family is gluten intolerance but i would of thought they would of tested her for that the specialist said he had done a full blood test on her she had quite a few done when she was in hospital

Are you in the uk Brenda? If so, 'full' blood tests don't always check for B12 levels or gluten intolerances unless asked for specifically. My own blood tests were inconclusive but I cannot break down complex carbohydrates or gluten and have experienced gluten ataxia. It took me 2 years and a lot of research and reading to get to the bottom of what was happening. Following a paleo diet for 2-3 weeks and then reintroducing sugar groups one at a time is the only way to really find out. It may be worth trying this while you wait for other tests and procedures. It is worth discussing this with your GP and ask to be referred to a nutritionist and digestive system specialist.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Absolutely get a referral to a neurtologoist  or an otolgist.  Her symptoms are identical to mine.  The Vestibular Therapy has been helping me.  It's a very slow recovery.  VERY SLOW.  So be prepared for a long road.  She won't wake up one day with it gone if it is vestibular neuritis.  She has to work at it and it's frustrating at times.  Best of luck to her.

Can u please explain2me what a calorics&a audiometry test is

I had it done by a neurologist.  Look up electronystagmography (vestibular) testing. It involves googles and moving your head certain ways and the introduction of warm and cold air or water.  The computer reads your eye movements to determine if there is vestibular weakness of any type.  There are other more advanced tests that involve a chair.  Be sure she doesn't have BPPV (benign positional proxymal vertigo).  It sounds more like what I have VN.  But with hearing loss you should read up on Meniere's disease.  I know more about this than I want to know.  If she has VN she needs to retain her brain to understand that her balance system has been compromised in some way.  Most likely her vestibular nerve has been injured.  The Vestibular Rehab Therapy (VRT) will work to do that.

Laurie34 and eleftherio33095 are both correct in adviising your daughter to have a neoro-otology appintment. My advice is something to pursue alongside and not instead of this approach. Casting a wider net from the start will help you reach a firm diagnosis sooner.

Totally agree iv got her booked in for a hearing test while im trying to sort it all out cause she says she is having trouble hearing but she only told me the other day&she said it started a little before the dizziness started

Does she have ringing in her ears that increases and decreases during the day and then gets worse lying down at night?

Shes never mensioned it i cant ask her now cause its passed midnight here in Australia&she is sound asleep but i will b sure to ask her in the morning&let you know

If she does, it's worth keeping tabs on when. If it's at its worse 2-4 hours after eating then the root cause of her symptoms is digestive. Another clue is a spinning sensation with dizzyness while lying down or reclining caused by acid refux. This can also lead to problems swollowing at night and slight breathlessless. Digestive problems cause toxity and this, along with the acid can cause hearing, balance and visual problems as well as intestinal ones. This is why I suggest ruling out a digestive source to her problem.

It's late in Oz so have a rest yourself and get her to list absolutely everything that feels 'different' and wrong to get a full list of symptoms, no matter how unrelated they seem.

Make sure to ask her if there's even slight ringing occasionally. It may only last a couple of seconds and not all the time.  Have her focus on what ear it's happening in.

Yes she said she gets ringing in both ears on&off its not constant

Hi me again i was just wondering do uno if having trouble sleeping is a symptom of vestibular ?
    • Posted

Can you expand on the sleep problems?  Is there trouble falling asleep, waking up in the morning, or waking up during the night?  Is there a reason for waking up during the night (difficulty in breathing, pain, blocked nose, etc).

The two conditions you have mentioned so far may be related.  Please follow up with a specialist as recommended previously.
