My daughter needs help. Please. Kidney pain with perfectly normal panels.

My daughter, 23, has had kidney pain for over 10 years. She has been to many doctors. Please excuse the fact that I dont know all the proper names for all the tests and such, but she has had blood tests, ultrasounds, live CT/X-ray thing to check urinary tract functions, something where they filled her bladder up with fluids for some flow check, etc., etc.

She doesn't always tell me things, but she talks to her mom and then I hear about it. My daughter is tired of the same tests over and over. I am tired of seeing her in pain all the time.

She just had a blood panel done and everything is in normal ranges. Kidney and liver were normal.

I was hoping someone out there may have some insight or information about what else may be causing her to have so much pain so often.

Thank you for taking the time to hear me out.

Concerned Dad

The same thing is happening to me. I am 22. I have had so many health issues it's ridiculous. I had hpylori for a year before it was ever found. I just got diagnosis with blood clots in my lungs. All my labs are normal but I feel this kidney pain everyday. It's dull, it feels like it burns or is infected or something. They keep telling me everything is ok but no it's not. Something horrible is wrong. I feel both of my kidneys, I know it's my kidneys & I'm peeing like crazy all day. It's horrible pain & it's hard to sleep or be on my back. I seriously feel like I am going to die. I'm more terrified of this than the blood clots!!! I had a ct scan everything showed it was fine. I am getting my gallbladder out Thursday to see if it helps my right side pain but I have no gallstones and my hida scan was good. I think it's a pointless surgery and I'm just going to be in more pain, not to mention I have to come off the blood thinners for 2 days for this surgery. you guys I am Terrified I am not going to wake up. can you please please pray for me. I just want my life back!!!!!! I am so scared and no dr is trying to help me. they are horrible here!!!!!

Hello, I have a similar thing, been in pain on and off since 2005. This week I have had urine, blood and ct scan which is all fine which is hard to understand as I was in pain while having the scan and I was sure they should be able to see something. I have been round and round in circles with all these tests over the years, it gets tiring.

I'm thinking I could be extremely sensitive, so foods that are harder on the liver or kidneys which are causing pain. Tea, coffee, high fat foods, chocolate alcohol can trigger anything from a couple of days of niggles to absolute agony for 3 weeks. I was vegan a couple of years ago and the pain went away but I decided to eat regular foods and it has all slowly come back. This week I have gone back vegan and feel better. Sorry for the long reply. I hope something I have written can be of some help and you manage to get a plan in place.

    Thanks.

    Hi Matthew

    Hows your daughter doing now?

Her symptoms sound like mine, I'm 38, female and in the UK. I started out with having kidney infections with all the symptoms, many years ago in my early twenties, which have very slowly gotten closer and closer together, to now this year their back to back. Sometimes they show up in culture tests but most of the time they don't. I've had such battle with gp's with negative results, though luckily I've found a good one and she prescribed antibiotics which work. I'm now very recently on a low dose daily antibiotic to keep infections at bay, and so far it seems to be working.

Though I've noticed in recent years I'm still in pain following an infection and it can take a while to go. I'm in pretty much constant pain now, the pain gets much worse when I lean back on it, I also get shivers down my side when in a lot of pain. I'm now on a high dose of pain relief (co-codamol ). I'm having regular blood tests and urine tests to keep an eye on it. My blood test does show raised crp and has done for a few years now, its usually around 4-12 though they've said that it could just be normal for me, or it could be something like arthritis in the body. Other than that my bloods are good. I've had ultrasound, ct, camera in the bladder and all have come back normal. I've been referred back to the urologist, though they don't know what it is as my results are all clear. I'm really hoping in time the pain goes away now I'm on a daily low dose antibiotic. I just can't keep being in pain and taking cocodamol.

I've really had enough of this now.

Does anyone have any insight into what it could be please? With greatest thanks Rebecca

Hi Mattew, I go through simular issues, some things are sneaky, I get sent home because tests come back good but then I go elsewhere & get a Urine Culture done & it will show something that the regular urine test will not show

Also often my ultra sound will not show stones but a cat scan will show stones

Somtimes a cat scan isnt even clear enough to tell if im partially blocked by a stone

    its so frustrating

Also I just reciently found out that what causes frequent stones in woman is often because of having noduels on the PARATHYROID GLAND

so now I will see an endocrinologist as well

Right this minute I am being discharged from the ER with kidney pain because all my tests were good but i never got a cat scan tonight because they were so busy

So I will go elsewhere for a cat scan tomorrow

    hope this helps

    Good luck

hello, I've been having the same "kidney pain" for the last 6 months. it started suttle, every now and then id feel pain on my right side (where my kidney is) and then over the next few days/weeks it started getting worse. the intense pain made me sick. if i had to try and describe the pain id say its a dull almost achy pain.. I find the only way to get the pain to calm down is to lay down but even then it still hurts for a while. I'm in the Army and we do a lot of physical activity which made it worse.. it got to the point where I couldn't even stand in formation for longer than 20 minutes without feeling nauseous, chills, sweating, and sometimes dizzy. I'd have to hunch over or lead forward to try and relieve the pain but it never worked. I eventually went to the ER where they tested my urine and found a very high count of both white and red blood cells.. they did a CT scan to see if I had any kidney stones.. the test came back clear. i had a follow up appointment and they did another urine analysis and CT scan. my blood count in urine went down a little but they saw inflamation around my kidney but no sign or cause. they tested my blood at the next appointment and my tests came back fine. they found scar tissue between my kidney and liver but they dont know what caused it or if it had anything to do with the pain. one doctor told me my kindey function wasnt that good for my age (21) and then the next day another doctor told me my kidney function was fine. one doctor told me he thoight it was a muscle in my back but it doesnt feel like a muscle pain..a pulled muscle doesnt make you physically ill. I know it isnt a muscle.. they prescribed me ibeuprofen which is extremely bad for kidneys and they gave me lidocane patches to put on the area when it hurts. neither medication works. Ive been to 5 apointments for this and no doctor ever has an answer for me... I'm honestly tired of always being in pain, I cant go to the gym or do PT anymore let alone stand or walk around for longer than 30 minutes and i'm ready to have my life back. I just need answers. I hope your daughter has found hers and is doing better.

my experience has been very similar to this. i went for a CT scan of my abdomen and they told me my kidneys were inflamed. after a few weeks, my kidneys started hurting but it came and went until it got super intense and then went away. this happened three times. my urologist thinks its a reocurring infection but i never get fevers.

i hope youve already got some andwers and got to the bottom of this but i agree with the other poster it definitely does ring bells for me among stories ive heard from fellow mcas patients. i personally dont get bladder issues. but have driends who have the issues youve discussed above (less so the pain but that main be cause by inflammation from allergies) that all completely settled down when they started mast cell stabilisers. prof khullar is the top dog in this area in the uk and definitely worth seeing id youve got comtinuing issues. i wish you all the luck.

Hi. Good evening. You are discriving the exact pain that I have been in for over 6 years. Its slowly got worse and worse and is now excruciating. They thought it was my gallbladder causing the pain as I had gallstones diagnosed in 2012 then in 2014 they scanned again and my gallbladder had shrunken. Since then I've had this awful pain in my right side. A dull ache that has just been getting worse and worse to the point now I can't sleep or eat properly as I feel sick all the time. Had bloods and urine but they came back normal and am being sent for ultrasound. They scared the life out of me thinking its something terrible. I really hope not. I'm 31. Just want the pain to stop. I can't go on like this. Currently prescribed naproxen codeine tramadol and paracetamol for the pain. Interested in what's been said about mast cells and might mention that to the Gp when I talk to her next. Did you daughter get any answers?

hello, 25 yo female here.. I'm not a doctor or anything but I'm here to tell you she isn't alone. I've been hospitalized a ton throughout my life without a single diagnosis.

my symptoms are as follows... frequent hives, sometimes painful. drs just say they are from stress.. hair loss.. severe bone and joint pain.. severe kidney pain that is constant and can often be sharp when I move, pain when urinating but not uti like pain, it's pain in my kidneys.. nausea and vomiting all time time.. fluid retention, like my legs and hands swell up like balloons for no reason.. I also at times experience dizzy spells where I wake up incontinent and half my body is numb..

now, I've had every test done under the moon (that I can afford) and my doctors say that my labs and diagnostic imaging is all clean and normal. they said I have "migraines" or that I'm a healthy 25 year old and I need to "lose weight and exercise"... I'm just as frustrated as you are. but don't lose hope, as you and your daughter are not alone. we will find answers. soon.

    Hi Matthew

I live in San Jose & I am also suffering from a similar problem. Two weeks back my husband called 911 & they also doubt kidney stone then I went to hospital in emergency department. They did all the test like blood, urine, ultrasound, xray & ct-scan but nothing came. Dr said all your reports are normal & its difficult to tell the reason. It might be due to some inflation of muscular skull & prescribed me 2-3 days ibuprofen. In hospital also, first pain killer didn't helped me so they gave second pain killer which worked. Last night also I suffered from the same pain & I had ibuprofen. I am also confused what is causing this pain. Does your daughter also feel more pain when she is exhaling & it stretch her waist area & it makes more uncomfortable to breath too with pain. I feel this pain on my right kidney & it increasing while lying on the bed. Please help me too if she also has the same symptom & if you get to know the root cause.

Hi Everyone, after talking to multiple doctors. It seems we might have musculoskeletal. Please try hot water bottle or heating pad in that area and see if you feel better. Just to make sure if it works please don't take pain killer for a while & start using heating pad initially when pain is starting & see if it works for you too. The main reason of this kind of pain is inflation of muscles.

One thing that may be worth a try, is to eliminate ALL forms of endocrine disruptors. Study, to find out what they are and where your daughter is being exposed to them. When the endocrine system has been triggered out of control/balance it takes way less of these to keep it out of balance than to put it out of balance. By eliminating ALL forms of exposition as much as is possible, the body has more chance of getting back into a relatively normal state. If things improve, which i sincerely hope, pay attention when she is re-exposed. Alcohol is really not good if this is her problem.

i see this is edited. i ran into this because i had the same question. i had an acute kidney infection a few months ago and was hospitalized with bad bad fever. The pain just came back a couple weeks ago, yet both ers said blood and urine tests plus cat scan was fine. my doctor finally ordered me an mri. i can say, hot water with lemon and honey. It at least relaxes me, and the lemon is good for ya. Until then, keep pushing the doctors. Don't give up. Another option if you have not done it yet, is to get an appointment with urology. look out for fevers, cut her off any caffeine, and avoid drinking. sorry if i wasn't help.
