my hubby had a hip replacement on Tuesday. He wants a shower?

Hubby had hip replacement 5 days ago. He wants to shower and wash his hair.  Is there something that would keep the dressing and wound dry? He would like to shower instead of stand up washing.

This sounds silly but when it comes to me having my op and having to shower id probs be selotaping a bin bag to my leg or something in desperate need for a shower. Can he stand in the shower without a crutch or something because thays something iv been wonderinf about. Can you stand in the shower or do you need your crutches and someone washing you?

Wrap the bandaged area well with a plastic garbage bag and tape it thoroughly around the edges to seal it. He should be fine. I had my first post-op shower in hospital the day after my surgery.

Once home, if I felt too lazy to do that, I washed my hair in the sink. Now that the stitches are out, can shower normally...

Forgot to add, make sure he uses a shower chair. A slippery, tiled floor is not hip-friendly...

I waited five weeks for a shower (over the bath), not as difficult as it seems. Strip wash, wash hair in the basin. With help of course. Tony

Without sounding to personal how did you shower? Were you able to stand without using your crutches or did you have to use them in the shower and get someone to wash you?

I just stood in the shower at the hospital with the Zimmer just outside but was fine standing, when I came home I just walked in and left my crutches just resting on the towel rail. Was fine I could walk pretty easily few steps those first days

In the hospital flat floor, walk in, they supplied you with a plastic garden chair in the shower, and you sat in that carefully, with your leg out in front of you as you sat down slumped in the chair. Observing the 90% rules. Grab rails and nurses to help you get up again afterwards. At home I had too get over the side of a bath, so used a bath board chair, you sit on it outside the shower, and then slide along, and lift your feet over the side of the bath, helps if its wet. Husband helped with reaching the shower head and adjusting, and also scrubbed my back for me, wonderful. Cling wrap for dressings firmly wrapped, and tapped with silver duck tape at top to stop water getting in, even hospital used cling wrap, mostly kept me dry.

Sarah you should be supplied with a seat for in the shower. Mines over the bath and I've been given a board that goes across the bath to slide across and sit in but been told not to use it for first 6 weeks! Had a couple of showers in hospital, now stand up washes.

Im struggling to understand these batj boards haha. If i really do have to not shower for the 6 weeks how did you wash your hair?

I was given a stool that is the right height for me. I put it at the side of the bath and, as not aloud to lean forwards, leaned backwards while my daughter washed my hair. It made my neck hurt after a bit but was so worth it! My dressing waterproof so when I feel a bit stronger might be tempted to try the bathboard but would need somebody with me. Plus as I can only stand on one leg they'll have to stay with me πŸ™ˆ

I put a post on somewhere else about when I was in hospital they put the shower on for me and I sat in a chair with op leg off the floor. Washed hair and showered but the nozzle to turn it off was behind me. Reached carefully over my shoulder whilst trying not to twist and turned power to full and temp to freezing. Couldn't turn it off and had to pull call bell and be rescued 😭
