My operation got cancelled because of illness...

Hi all, Just wondering if any of you have ever had your operation cancelled because you got sick on the day? Also how long did it take to re book it ?
I was due to have my operation yesterday (21st) and felt fine until I was given a pre operative carbonated drink (like a sweet lemon drink) because my operation was in the afternoon and I had been nil by mouth since 12 midnight.
Anyways after drinking this I threw it up like half hour later and was violently sick for hours and had a really bad headache so obviously they had to cancel my operation.
I'm still feeling a bit ill now and still havent managed to eat but I have had to take unpaid time off work for my operation so really need to go back as sooon as I can.

Lady cupcake,
i cant emagine how disappointing you must feel. After all the preparations of getting to the OP appt then getting sick. Having nothing past midnight the night before surgery is a prerequisite for all surgeries. I waited til 1 pm the next after noon, listened to music to keep my mind off the empty tummy. Does kind of make the tummy feel a bit of nausea. With no food or drink for over 10 hours. In my case I almost declined due to tummy upset from no food or even water or a ice chip. It's better to go without food from midnight if havingnearly am surgery.
Whtoday. It's best to have op postponed. With the issues you had under anesthesia aspirations in the lungs put many at great risk. Sometimes things happen for utterly no reason. Please don't let this be a set back but make it can be a step up. Gives you more time to prepare.
Read ad up on THR as much as possible see the op in utube. There is a demonstration without using real surgery patients.
Stay strong get get well soon.

That's a let down !! But obviously you couldn't have had the op in that condition. My operation didn't happen until 4pm and i was ravenous by then. Try not to get downhearted. ?

Thanks, but more determined than brave, like the OP, I was desperate for the op to go ahead as I'd just had enough of the pain and not being able to sleep. When the nurse came in to get me ready I nearly burst in tears as i thought she was going to say they couldn't do it. 🕓

That's an odd reaction! Are you allergic to something in it?
I think the only people who can answer this would be the hospital. Some people may wait weeks or months in some areas. Others may be scheduled quite quickly. Can you phone them and ask?

I too react badly to drinks that are very sweet if I don't have anything on my stomach. Next time around, try sipping on chicken broth (or the equivalent). I can tollerate some salts, but not sugars if I've fasted.

Hi ladycuwente i think the answer depends on the area you live.
I had mine cancelled a few days before my op (28 feb ' 16) as the anaesthetic consultant wanted to check out my sleep aponea. This took six months and I needed a cpap machine. Back I went for another pre op to be told I had anaemia so had to have colonoscopy and gastroscopy to be told nothing was amiss.
I had another pre op Nov '16 and had to wait for a date. Unfortunately this was during the busiest time for hospitals so it was wait and wait so

Sorry to hear that you missed your surgery due to being sick. Hope you feeling better soon.
To answer your question, it really depends on the area where you live. If you go private, then you can be back in within 10 days.
Wishing you the best

Hi LadyCupcake,
I now live in the US, so going private wasn't an option for me. Thankfully I have a good job that offers discounted medical insurance. I still have to pay several thousand dollars, but its the only option here. There are so many people here that can't afford medical. There have been so many times when I've missed the NHS. Trust me, grass it not always greener on the other side
