My operation got cancelled because of illness...

Hi all, Just wondering if any of you have ever had your operation cancelled because you got sick on the day? Also how long did it take to re book it ?

I was due to have my operation yesterday (21st) and felt fine until I was given a pre operative carbonated drink (like a sweet lemon drink) because my operation was in the afternoon and I had been nil by mouth since 12 midnight.

Anyways after drinking this I threw it up like half hour later and was violently sick for hours and had a really bad headache so obviously they had to cancel my operation.

I'm still feeling a bit ill now and still havent managed to eat but I have had to take unpaid time off work for my operation so really need to go back as sooon as I can.

I'm so sorry , how completely disappointing for you. I would have hated my op being postponed, but obviously they couldn't go ahead when you were being sick. Keep on phoning the surgeon's secretary. Good luck.

    Hi Lady Cupcake ,

weird ... did you get an explanation ?  Personally I never heard of people getting some kind of a drink prior surgery ... I didn't but if they would have given me anything, I would totally trust them ...

I hope that they gave you a new date - not fair if they put you way down on the list --- any advice they gave you ?

please let us know how you are getting on, okay

    what a bummer 1!!

    big warm hug

Hi renee, I didnt get an explanation no. I think the drink was just to stop me dehydrating as my op must have been scheduled for late afternoon.

I dont have a new date yet, they did give me one but then the same day cancelled it!

It doesnt help that I have to have my op at castle hill hospital which is 40 miles away from where I live and the hull hospital trust is really struggling right now!

I'm just carrying on really gone back to work and just waiting

    Hi there

my operation was scheduled for April 3 and I went to the pre-op at the hospital on Thursday. The first part was blood work, history,EKG,etc. then a wait until we had a class on physiotherapy and also occupational therapy which included instructions on items such as a walker, cane, sock helper, etc. At that point one of the other women in my group gave us the news----- the surgeon who was to perform the hip surgery on her, another woman in the group and myself, had a skiing accident and broke his leg!

the surgery has been cancelled for at least six weeks and probably longer. All the other orthopaedic surgeons in my city are booked solid and have very long waiting lists. I have been waiting since July 2016 and in considerable pain most of the time. I'm walking with a cane now. There is nothing we can do but wait. I spoke to the surgeons nurse and she told me she cancelled all surgeries for April, May, and June then if the doctor is healed, she will begin booking again. You can imagine the uproar about this but there really is nothing we can do but wait.

so LadyCupcake I know how you feel, the disappointment is great and certainly messes up your work, etc. I do hope you are feeling better and get rebooked very very soon.

as far as I am concerned, I just hope my surgeon heals very quickly and has no complications. In the meantime I'm chewing Tylenol trying to keep the pain at bay.

    good luck to you

      hi ginny,

goodness, that is not good news ... not for the surgeon and not for you !!!

is there anyway you could have this surgery in another hospital ?

it is funny how they consider Total hip replacement a elective surgery when hip is not broken ...

I am so so sorry Ginny ... '

      please stay in touch

      big warm hug

I agree it should not be classified as elective, we didn't ask for all this pain that's for sure.

No it's not the number of hospitals it's the number of orthopaedic surgeons available. I could go to another hospital in another city but the waiting lists are just as long. I live in Ontario, Canada and this is a huge problem now in my province as there have been so many cutbacks in healthcare under the present political party.

thanks for the hug as it is much needed.

Hey Ginnys, OMG this is crazy i really do feel for you. How dare your surgeon go skiing when he has surgery to do lol !

Your right tho all we can do is wait and carry on taking the pills for pain. Luckily I dont need a cane at the mo and I'm back at work but walking is getting harder every day.

      Take care x

      Hi Ginnys,

I agree, we didn't ask for this pain and it should not be classified as Elective.

Not sure about you, but I can remember my Great Grandparents (lived in Oxfordshire), and of course my Grandparents and own parents.  None of them ever complained about their hips or knees hurting.  They certainly didn't ever have replacements.  My Great Grandparents lived until their early 90's.  Now it seems that our generation is suffering very badly with their hips.  Perhaps they just learned to live with the pain, although they never complained about it.  I'm thinking that maybe it wasn't an option back then for them, so they just continued living life to the fullest.

Just seems strange.  Were they healthier than us?  Food for thought....

    Hi LadyC,

There is a chance I am in the same situation as you.  My surgery is scheduled for next Monday and last Friday (three days ago) I found out I have a UTI.  I am on antibiotics and on Thursday of this week (just days before operation) the doctor will do another screening to see if infection is gone.

I asked what would happen if I did, the answer "we'll cross that bridge when we get to it."  Not encouraging at all.  However, I do believe everything happens for a reason and I certainly do not want to go in with an infection as that is probably the worst situation.

Best of luck to both of us.

    Is yours rescheduled yet?
