My story and how I beat globus sensation

I made a promise that if I got better I would share my story on this discussion board in the hope that I may help someone. All the posts on here were a great comfort to me when I was experiencing this awful condition.

It all happened about 8 weeks ago. I was in the theatre and just sat down to begin the show when I ate a sweet normally, took a sip of water normally and afterwards felt like I was having difficulty swallowing. My mouth went super dry and I felt like a had a lump in my throat and my tongue was enlarged (it wasn't). I thought perhaps I was having a reaction to something so before the interval I had to leave and get out of there. I felt complete terror and danger and thought I was going to die. My husband was worried and took me to A&E. I couldnt breathe properly but was not wheezing. I felt like someone was strangling me, standing on my neck and I was in a complete panic that came out of nowhere. Apparently I had a panic attack or severe anxiety episode. Well, I didnt believe this diagnosis because I had over the years suffered from anxiety on and off and bouts of low mood but even when I have faced the most difficult times in my life, never have I had a panic attack so wondered why on such a happy day I would develop this. Anyway the initial attack was only the start of my problems, I was told the symptoms of my choking sensation would go away within a few hours. It didnt. This made it worse and I was not so easily going to put this down to stress as most things seem to be these days. I went to my GP who said I did seem to have some swelling in my neck and ordered me an ultrasound. As I couldn't wait 3 weeks for the paperwork to come through I saw an ENT consultant privately who put a camera up my nose and down my throat and said everyhing looked perfect and likely to be globus sensation which is common when experiencing panic attacks and anxiety. This only gave me some comfort because I was still feeling these awful symptoms. After the 4th week I had scan and this showed nothing. My thyroid was perfect, which I suspected may be the issue due to my high thyroid antibodies, although I knew I had normal thyroid function. This was also some comfort. I was suffering, and it was really really getting me down. Having to get up every day and go to work was so hard and I was so anxious I was not sleeping or eating well. I thought I would have it forever. After a while I started to think, well this isn't going to kill me as time has proven, its not getting worse or better so I need to start trying things to see if anything helps. I also had a strange crawling sensation in my neck not on top of my skin but underneath - hard to explain. Also when I put chin to chest I felt like the part between my neck and chin was swollen. I tried breathing exercises, hot water bottles, hot baths, drinking red wine, taking NSAI's, drinking loads of water, trying to eat better, sleep better, watching funny films but nothing worked. I then found a couple of websites online suggesting a very simple neck exercise to do many times throughout the day and specifically for globus sufferers. I started to do this and over a week the symptoms started to ease and has got better and better to the point that its only 5% there. The most important part is to make sure your shoulders are always down and pushed back as far as you can. No hunched shoulders or it won't work. Then carefully, with mouth closed, ease your neck back as far as it can go, all the time looking up to the ceiling. You should be able to feel yourself stretching your neck. It may make you cough a little. Then roll your head a little to left and right and centre. It probably won't work the first go. you have to do it many times a day over a week or so.

My GP said that panic attacks can cause a lot of problems in the neck, real tension and muscles, and other structures and a horrid sensation of a lump in your neck. I have to understand now that this is the cause.

Apologies for the long post but it's a long story.

I hope it helps someone.

Good luck to you all and take care of yourselves.

    hello everyone

Just wanted to let you all know that I have had measurable life for almost month with globous sensation. I checked with ENT and other specialists about the symptoms nothing was wrong.  Finally about a week while I was driving, it over powered me to the point that I was chocking. I pulled over and start shouting to myself. I complained form me to me that what is wrong with me? why I am making myself and people around me so measurable? Long story short, that was it. I am fine and not suffering it anymore. sometimes I feel that its still there but nothing noticeable.

      Hi Peter,

I'm very interested in your story- I've been suffering with this going on four months now and it really depresses me. What else can I learn about what you did to correct it? All I can think of are silly questions like how long were you yelling? How loud? What did you feel in your throat while doing it? I wonder, could it work with me??

      Thanks, Deon

Like I said it made me misreable and did exact samething to my kids. It was bothering me that it is putting distance between me and them. I have a feeling that this was bothering me more than globous  sensation. I must add that it is still there. What helps me is that I don't swallow anything even my saliva and it goes away temporarily.

Can you take antihisthamines with Lansoprazoles?

Take 1 Cetirizine (zyrtec) every day cures it , its low level hystamine attack on your body.

This is interesting to read. My globus has two extremes, one is a daily tightness and one is a full blown chocking sensation. Like my uvula is so swollen its getting in the way. Makes me gag and cant talk...first time was a horrendous experience. I assumed the uvula one is a reaction to a food and the daily one is anxiety and silent reflux. Point of my story is, I always take an antihistammine for the full choke and never thought to take it daily to see if it would help. I normally take Omeprezole every day but have mixed results. It general is SO much better though but I fugured it was alot to do with my mind set. Doesnt stress me out as much even when its bad and thats seems to help it go away quicker.

What does your doctor think of taking an antihistmmine every day.

On a side note I really wish this site had auto correct! haha A medical platform as well, some many big kid words! smile

Hi Mike... do you think I can take antihisthamines everyday, currently on 60mg of Lansoprazoles... do you thnk these acid reflux tablets make a difference... they are silent refluxs.. not with heartburn or anything, just a choking sensation in the neck... like you are holding back from crying, and there is a lump in there... and mucus.. but in reality there is nothing there...

Love to hear a response... from you or anyone else who has these symptoms.

Mine doesn't hurt i've had it for about 3 weeks now just went to a doctor and he prescribed me Amoxycillin(antibiotic) which i doubt will do anything it's only a 5 day round of them i'll let everyone know how it goes i doubt it will help, a lot of the diagnosis say it's brought on by stress and anxiety which has me confused, i was pretty damn happy until i got it. I've seen a few posts of people saying antihistamine working wonders so i'm going to give that a go. It's just so bloody anoying, and the thing is people tell you to take your mind of it which is really hard it's probably the worst feelings you can get and unfortunatly not really any medical treatment around to help.

They are right about taking your mind off of it. I have no problem all day while I am occupied at work. As soon as I come home and sit on the couch or relax, it comes back. It is even more annoying to know that there is nothing there in the throat but feel that you are chocking.

hi i had the same thing and some swelling in my larynx from my gerd. started new gerd meds and not helping the choking feeling as of yet. my neck also got sore and more sore along with the top part of my back. had an mri and blood work my phosphate levels were so high off the chart so the mri showed a tumour in my neck at the back in the vertabrae protruding out toward my throat and that what was causing the globus sensation and the swelling in my throat. having the tumour biopsied and praying for remaval soon. i know its scary news and im glad you are feeling better and i pray it is what they told you but because of the scare and it being such an odd thing i do tell everybody to check their phosphate levels in case
