My story and how I beat globus sensation

I made a promise that if I got better I would share my story on this discussion board in the hope that I may help someone. All the posts on here were a great comfort to me when I was experiencing this awful condition.

It all happened about 8 weeks ago. I was in the theatre and just sat down to begin the show when I ate a sweet normally, took a sip of water normally and afterwards felt like I was having difficulty swallowing. My mouth went super dry and I felt like a had a lump in my throat and my tongue was enlarged (it wasn't). I thought perhaps I was having a reaction to something so before the interval I had to leave and get out of there. I felt complete terror and danger and thought I was going to die. My husband was worried and took me to A&E. I couldnt breathe properly but was not wheezing. I felt like someone was strangling me, standing on my neck and I was in a complete panic that came out of nowhere. Apparently I had a panic attack or severe anxiety episode. Well, I didnt believe this diagnosis because I had over the years suffered from anxiety on and off and bouts of low mood but even when I have faced the most difficult times in my life, never have I had a panic attack so wondered why on such a happy day I would develop this. Anyway the initial attack was only the start of my problems, I was told the symptoms of my choking sensation would go away within a few hours. It didnt. This made it worse and I was not so easily going to put this down to stress as most things seem to be these days. I went to my GP who said I did seem to have some swelling in my neck and ordered me an ultrasound. As I couldn't wait 3 weeks for the paperwork to come through I saw an ENT consultant privately who put a camera up my nose and down my throat and said everyhing looked perfect and likely to be globus sensation which is common when experiencing panic attacks and anxiety. This only gave me some comfort because I was still feeling these awful symptoms. After the 4th week I had scan and this showed nothing. My thyroid was perfect, which I suspected may be the issue due to my high thyroid antibodies, although I knew I had normal thyroid function. This was also some comfort. I was suffering, and it was really really getting me down. Having to get up every day and go to work was so hard and I was so anxious I was not sleeping or eating well. I thought I would have it forever. After a while I started to think, well this isn't going to kill me as time has proven, its not getting worse or better so I need to start trying things to see if anything helps. I also had a strange crawling sensation in my neck not on top of my skin but underneath - hard to explain. Also when I put chin to chest I felt like the part between my neck and chin was swollen. I tried breathing exercises, hot water bottles, hot baths, drinking red wine, taking NSAI's, drinking loads of water, trying to eat better, sleep better, watching funny films but nothing worked. I then found a couple of websites online suggesting a very simple neck exercise to do many times throughout the day and specifically for globus sufferers. I started to do this and over a week the symptoms started to ease and has got better and better to the point that its only 5% there. The most important part is to make sure your shoulders are always down and pushed back as far as you can. No hunched shoulders or it won't work. Then carefully, with mouth closed, ease your neck back as far as it can go, all the time looking up to the ceiling. You should be able to feel yourself stretching your neck. It may make you cough a little. Then roll your head a little to left and right and centre. It probably won't work the first go. you have to do it many times a day over a week or so.

My GP said that panic attacks can cause a lot of problems in the neck, real tension and muscles, and other structures and a horrid sensation of a lump in your neck. I have to understand now that this is the cause.

Apologies for the long post but it's a long story.

I hope it helps someone.

Good luck to you all and take care of yourselves.

Margete, have you ever tried seeing a therapist. They can help quite a bit. I did that and I am glad I did.

    Halo people,

I am here to finally give you the good news that after struggling with GLOBUS SENSATION for 4 months, I finally beat it.

There following are the steps I went through:

    1. I developed the globus sensation in July 27th 2016, it happened after a tragic event; out of which I all of a sudden started feeling something up my throat and did not go away.

    2. I visited my GP who recommended that I use Somac 40 mg x1 for two weeks. He was suspecting ACID REFLUX. Sadly, there were no changes after the two weeks.

    3. Three months later, with the same problem, I started panicking more and more because it became more evident that I was not going to get rid of it. It used to occupy my mind every other minute, in fact; becoming one of my greatest worries.

    4. After some time, my voice ayarted to become hoarse, deep and was painfull if I started to

      Cont....

My voice became hoarse and painfull after some time....I waent to the Gp again and she gave me OMEPRAZOLE 20mg x1 a day.

5 after 5 months of struggling with it, I finall y came to realize that there might have been some few aspects that triggered it:

      * I went for holiday for one month, and on returning back, the sensation had long disappeared completely.

      * I realized that Omeprazole was helpful.

      * I you sleep next to a thermostat, ot worsens it, because it dries your airways. Try changing your location.

      * IMPORTANT! The sensation is attached to your emotions and thoughts...the moment you let the condition ocupy your thoughts, you won't easily get rid of it.

*BELIEVE THE CONDITION WILL DISAPPEAR SOME DAY.

I have had many symptoms, mainly triggered by stress which leads to symptoms then health anxiety 😒 Now I've seen the ENT and all is clear I'm convinced it's stomach related although this did appear after a stressful 2 weeks with kids on half term!! Maybe it's stress related but I can't believe it would cause this awful scratchy and feeling of bone stuck in my lower throat but then I guess stress does cause all sorts of symptoms, I should know!! I'm now getting ear pains, maybe connected to tense neck muscles 🤔

I'm glad yours has now gone!!

Wishing you all the best in this journey towards full recovery. It is nice you pointed out stress as a triggering factor, yes I agree with you. Try avoiding stress at all costs. You may even try out new things like; new hobies or even changing your environment for a while. Good Luck!

Hi there, this was quite a read and very similar to my incident.   Mine started three months ago...was eating a casava chip, and my throat started closing up, the ambulance was called in and they thought it was an allergic reaction.   So took me away, gave me adrenaline, put me on a 5 day steroid course etc.  However, after having seen a private doc, it turns out it is not there, so again more test and more dramas, for acid reflux, and thyroid and everything under the sun... it is still on going, infact even yesterday had an endoscopy done, not a pleasant episode, and the neck felt more sore than ever... I even flew abroad reluctantly for a prebooked wedding, the thought of flying and something happening whilst I was out there was terrifying...

For past three months, i have not eaten spicy food... no alcohol, no juice or fizzy drinks, no hard food... been living on  porridge, bananas etc, basically soft non spicy food...

Have lost a substantial amount of weight too, not that I was ever fat...

They Endoscopy results show I have Hiatus Hernia not sure if that is connected to Globus Hysterus... the excercise, well shall give it a go... but I have not been the same for the first episode... almost a fear of eating...

Went in twice after that, as the BP and heart rate had gone up due to the Steroids ... even last night had difficulties breathing, after affects maybe of the endoscopy...

I have been prescribed anti reflux tablets too. So hope they work...

Good to read this forum and know I am not the only one...

Might be hemocromatosis get your iron levels checked , damages your glands in neck . High iron levels drain you cause heart palpatations and make you foggy brain also causes globus as gland has iron overload and tires you daily badly .

Give blood as often as allowed , you will feel better . check with doc your ferritin levels or if you have Old results go back and check them . before that try a zertec it works 1 tab - 24h tablet called Cetirizine .

Hello, I've found your post just earlier and I am also suffering from Globus. I've observed that mine starts 2 or 3 hours after waking up. Does having neck strains or looking down too much make it appear? I am an online seller so I update my items thru my phone. The tendency is that I look down my phone mostly then after a while, I feel it starting to appear, I mean, the lump in my throat. I have never done any tests due to financial incapacity. And I had this before, it disappeared for months. And just last 3 weeks, it came back after having swolen tonsils. I'll try this neck exercise, hope it helps. Thank you!

      Hello Jan

I always had a suspicion that it could be swollen tonsils

      Did you get yours removed?

Hello, my globus was gone for almost a week now. I was having worries about it but I try to ease it up a bit. Regarding my tonsils, it's already okay, healed and I don't feel any pain anymore. And no trouble with globus so far til today. I try to relax and don't think about it much. Do lot of things to keep my mind off of it. And I tried the neck exercise too. I hope that helps all of us suffering from globus or the like.
