Myths and misconceptions about osteoporosis and osteopenia

Posted , 5 users are following.

Apparently there are a few myths and much misinformation even coming from doctors who sometimes seem to know little about osteoporosis or osteopenia.

Reading up on women's health and with all the reading I have been doing there were a few surprises.

Two jumped out at me. Note these come from a reputable place.

One was that biphosphonates do no harm. Second was the one that made me sit up and take notice. Osteopenia is not the same as osteoporosis one does not lead to the other. Theses are apparently myths.

Hi I haven't been on the site for a while, but it seems ro me that no one seems to know what is good for you and what is not.

Since I was last on the site I have tried the 10mg one a day AA, the side effects were no better and the daily regime was awful! I have been trying Risedronate 35mg one a week for the last 8 weeks, and the side effects are beginning to build up. Thats another story. When you mention side effects you get told carry on it will settle down, but according to the patient information leaflet especially regarding chest pains, it gets worse the longer you take the tablets.  I am seriously considering stopping the treatment, but carrying on with the ad-cal. I just wish I could get a straight answer

I am hoping the natural way will pay off. One lady has reported success but there are no studies to back this up yet.

I just read online but now take vitamin D3, vitamin K2, magnesium,  and recently added zinc. I also have prunes and avocados when they are not too dear. Vitamin A is included with the zinc.

I believe the drugs are not good and the natural route is worth a try.

I am also hoping that the natural way works. I will get another scan at the end of 2016 and will share the results. I just can't bring myself to take bisphosphonates when so many people have such awful side effects. Thanks for suggesting prunes and avocados. I like both of those. I am drinking IPA beer because of the silicon content. It also cheers me up no end!

We keep learning more and more. A study needs to be done with three groups including people doing nothing, people taking the drugs and people taking the vitamins and foods that promote bone health. There would be sub groups within those too but that could be managed. Now let us see who would do that? Not the drug companies for sure!

That is a very good idea, but can't see it happening in the near future! How do we make ourselves heard? The forum is a fantastic support network. I've learned more here about OP and AA than anywhere else. Its good to know you're not alone!

Sure is Lyn! I would be doubting my choice only for this support on here.

Don't forget the zinc and apples (skin has some very good stuff in it). I do the prunes - 6 dried ones a day before breakfast (sticky but yummy). Now have to see about the avocados

Hi Kathleen, it's the nosey one again,

Regarding doubting your choice, it is my considered opinion based on lots of previous posts, that the only thing I could envisage going wrong is the exercise and even then, as has been commented elsewhere, a little drop in a very small pond is a large percentage. That's a long-winded way of saying that the exercise which you can do is done when you can and you need (in my humble opinion) to have a lot of faith and determination that things will go right. We could have an army of well people by the end of the year if this all works. Really it's all a case of keeping the focus and taking the correct medication and doing lots of chatting to people of a like mind.  It helps the focus and keeps you in touch with how others are faring in this cruel world. It's also very good for one to socialise a little, even if it is halfway around the world. There's the other side, that you probably motivated me to get moving and do something about my 'condition'. Thanks for that

      Regards
