Nausea 12 weeks after gallbladder removal

Had my gallbladder removed 12 weeks ago due to pain from 1 large stone. Had the dreaded diarrhea for 8 weeks but has settled. Have the most horrendous nausea I have ever experienced. It's worse in the mornings and I can hardly get out of bed its that bad. Some days it goes by lunchtime and I feel ok and other days it lingers until the evening and then I feel ok. Was back in hospital last week and other than a little gastritis everything is ok. My surgeon said it will go in time. I am just wondering if this happened to anyone else and how long did it take to go. Its starting to depress me now!

Hello there,
I see this form hasn't been very active for a while but I've been having the worst time ever after getting my gallbladder out. It's been a year and 4 months since my surgery and I'm still feeling the after math. I feel as though no one is taking me seriously on the matter and it's more or less a "push through it" approach. I've recently got the wonderful opportunity to attend college for a course I am passionate about and this is taking every toll on me possible. I'm vomiting and diharrea at the same time in the mornings for the past couple days. It's a depends on the day kind of sickness but I vomit every morning, I don't remember what not feeling sick feels like, I've been to the doctor numerous time trying to find a solution to this, I've just been prescribed bile salts to slow down the bile production. I hope this finally helps after trying many many acid reflux medications and bowel medications . It affects your mental state being this physical sick for this long. It comes to a point where you don't even want to tell anyone how sick you really feeling in fears of a look that conveys "this again". I'm feeling like I'm failing in important aspects of my life because of this & this forum gave me some comfort knowing I'm not alone and this sickness isn't all in my head . I honestly hope no one ever has to go through this suffering ..

I know exactly what you are going through as I have been there! My nausea is a lot better but I still have a lot of digestive problems! I know for me that I have bile reflux which causes nausea, bile vomiting, and chest pain. It was confirmed after seeing bile in my endoscopy twice. This is a common problem after gallbladder unfortunately. Some do ok taking bile binders, especially in the morning. For me that didn't help. The only thing that can help you if you do have bile is a deemester switch surgery to move the bile farther away from your stomach. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1876986/. Here is a study on it. I would recommend getting a endoscopy. I will say I'm a lot better than I was months ago.

You're not alone.. This is a terrible feeling.. I had my gallbladder removed a little over 5 weeks ago and was nauseous for about 2 weeks and the feeling a little better belly still hurt but was drinking peppermint tea. This past week the nausea came back and I'm so depressed... I'm on zofran which doesn't help with the nausea just keeps me from vomiting.. Then it can constipate you.. I'm so over this! I would love to know how you are feeling now. I'm waiting for my bile salts to come in the mail!! Fingers crossed!

Hi Acejohnston, I had my gallbladder removed July12, 2017. I was having the nausea, chest and back pain and "just not feeling good" off and on for 5 years. Twice in those 5 years I went to the emergency room thinking I was having a heart attack. It finally got so bad that the doctor had a function test of my gallbladder and it had 0% function. I felt great for the first 2 weeks after surgery and then the same symptoms hit! I'm am now having the nausea, chest and back pain. In the evenings both of my upper arms tingle sometime (I know that sounds strange) If I sleep in a zero gravity chair it helps me sleep. How long did your systems last and did you take anything that helped. My family doctor just put me on Mi Carafate Sus 4 times a day. I'll see how that works. Thank you for your help.

I had mine out 7/5/17 and I am still not back to normal. I wonder if it is because I'm older. 74. Everyone says that having their gallbladder out was a piece of cake. I still have no appetite and can't eat much. I have never had diarrhea but instead suffer with constipation. I had a gastric emptying test last week and will find out the results on Thursday. I am very depressed because it seems like I will never get better. I had a mild stroke in March and never really recovered from that when I started having all f these stomach problems. I may feel ok one day and then have stomach distress the next even though I eat the same things I have missed out on every family event since March. I am interested in acupuncture but don't know how to go about finding someone to do it. If anyone can give me some suggestions about how to get better, I would appreciate it.I've lost about 25 lbs so none of my clothes fit me. This has really been a miserable time in my life and if it hadn't been for God, I don't think I would have gotten this far.

Hi Carol, I am so sorry that you have had so many problems. I have been doing a few things that seem to help. My doctor has me taking Catafate before each meal and before bed. I also have been going to a reflexologist. I seem to get anxiety in the evenings, I think because that's when I have had my worst flare ups, so I take a 1/2 of an adivan before bed. also, I am sure this doesn't have anything to do with feeling better but I am drinking distilled water only. I figured it can't hurt. I also have really been watching what I eat. I don't eat any fatty foods. Fresh fruit, fresh veggies and low fat meat and no fat dairy and stay away from processed food with "junk" in it!! I have been feeling really good for the most part. It's a trial and error. You have to find what works for you. I will include you on my prayer list that you will see better days.

Carol, I was 74 when mine came out. It has been awful and can relate to all you said. You must eat even if you have to take an appetite stimulate. I did not improve until I did.
It's so important to know that this will pass. It took me almost years.

Thank you for your response and for putting me on your prayer list. I'm starting to feel a little better. I have come to realize that it will take time. I eat much as you do. and I have gone off of gluten for the past month. I'm not sure if it has helped or not. I have heard that it helps some people. I found out that my stomach is emptying correctl y and that has been a great relief to me. I just finished several weeks of physical therapy and that has helped me to get some of my strength back. There were times when I went to my appointments feeling nauseated with my stomach queasy and the workouts made me feel better. For me, walking really helps. I plan to try acupuncture and have located a practttioner here where I live. I hope that you continue to feel better.Best of luck in your recovery.

Hi Nancy. I wouldn't wish this condition on my worst enemy. I can eat a little more than I used to be able to. I do believe that this will pass, but at my age, I don't have years to recover. The nurse that prepped me for my surgery told me that I was the healthiest person that she would see that day. Me, who had had a stroke, lost about 20 lbs and was weak as a kitten. I wonder how those other poor other souls made out that day.
