Nausea 12 weeks after gallbladder removal

Posted , 108 users are following.

Had my gallbladder removed 12 weeks ago due to pain from 1 large stone. Had the dreaded diarrhea for 8 weeks but has settled. Have the most horrendous nausea I have ever experienced. It's worse in the mornings and I can hardly get out of bed its that bad. Some days it goes by lunchtime and I feel ok and other days it lingers until the evening and then I feel ok. Was back in hospital last week and other than a little gastritis everything is ok. My surgeon said it will go in time. I am just wondering if this happened to anyone else and how long did it take to go. Its starting to depress me now!

I know this was years ago. I just had my taken out a little over 5 weeks ago. First couple of week I was nauseous and in discomfort then I started to feel better not 100%. This week I'm feeling nauseous all day long!! Does it get better?

Hi Jenn yes it does get better. It took me 2 years to feel better but things started to improve after a year. The diarrhea started to ease then. I went to Acupuncture and that really helped. They recommended I try acupressure bands and they helped as well as ginger tea. They put me on herbs and milk thistle which helped. It can take the liver a long time to adjust without a gallbladder but for most it takes 3-6 months but for others it can take a bit longer. Try sleeping with your bed elevated as well. That helped me too, I hope you feel better soon. Take care

I had my GB out on May of 2015 after feeling awful for over a year - no stones, just sludge. The next two years I was as sick as I have ever been - everyday. I got on this forum and read Ace Johnston's post. It gave me some hope.

About two years after the surgery, I began to feel the "sick" feeling fade, and I think at this point it is gone. Unfortunately before I went away, depression set in.  That is now my problem.

So please stay positive, and know that this pass.  Don't let yourself get depressed.

Also, don't expect doctors to agree that having your GB out can cause this result. They just don't see it.

I'd like to say that the support I have dad from my husband has been invaluable.

Mine came out in 2015.  The nausea was bad for a long time but has eased a bit now.  The once a day diahorrea still persists.  I had hoped the op,would stop this but it hasnt.  I have fallen into the trap of letting it get me down and im so depressed about not being able to eat what I used to, and not being able to,go where I want to.  I just feel,i am getting nowhere.  Dr gave anti deps but they made me worse, he referred me to psychiatrust who just deals in doling out anti deps.  Cant find a way out of all this.

Jenn! Hello! It does get better, and this site really helped me when I was at my worst. I had mine taken out January 2nd. The all day nausea has lightened up, but honestly, the diarrhea isn't much better. I have to be really careful about what I eat -- high fiber stuff just goes right through me, which is a bummer because I love oatmeal. And I also have this need to know where the nearest bathroom is, because when it hits, it hits fast, and there's no waiting around -- I hate that. My doctor gave me some stuff to help constipate me, but it had the opposite affect. I was also prescribed nefazadone several weeks ago for the diarrhea. It seems to help a little -- as long as I'm really careful about what I eat, I can sometimes go a whole day with only one bout. Also, as an aside they prescribe it sometimes for depression too, so it can help a little there with all this crap.

I still get nauseous with certain things -- acupuncture helped, tea, acupressure bands (all the things Acejohnston mentioned), 7-up/Ginger Ale, and they make these little ginger candies that help A TON. I carry them around with me in my purse all the time. They are usually made by an Asian company, and you can find them in those sections in the grocery store, or a specific Asian food grocery store. I swear by those things. Hang in there!!!!! No one believes you when you tell them how much changed after getting your gallbladder (but it doesn't do anything, why would it bother you to have it out?!) taken out, but it's a relief to be here and see that it does indeed happen.

Hi Nancy I'm so sorry you suffered too. It really upsets me to see so many suffer after this surgery. You are so right staying positive is so important to recovery. Depression is also very very common after gallbladder removal but very few doctors will tell you that. I know many many women who experienced it and anxiety too. I developed anxiety which I never had in my life. It was horrendous. Im ok now but it was awful. Keep positive. It too shall pass. Big hugs xx

Ann have you tried psyllium husk powder? I took it when I had the bile diarrhea and it was a life saver. I could go out and eat without feeling stressed about getting diarrhea. The other thing that can help is digestive enzymes with ox bile. The psyllium husk powder is definitely worth trying and is very effective. I tried Imodium and also bile binders at the time but found the psyllium husk powder the best. Take care xx

Michelle have you tried psyllium husk fibre for the diarrhea? I found it a life saver for the 18 months I had the diarrhea. If your in the USA Metamucil powder,  tablets or wafers might help also.  Your right nobody realises the importance of the gallbladder and we are all told we don't need it. It's only after removal that we realise it is an important organ. Take care xxx

That's all great advice! Thank you I will try.. Hopefully, everything will be better soon. They have me on sucralfate 1 mg to absorb the bile and acid I think. sad Just started taking that this week with a probiotic. Fingers crossed! It's nice to know you're not alone in this.. Thank you for all your advice!

Thank you Nancy! I agree this forum has been comforting. Sorry to say I'm also suffering from depression with this. Some days are better then others. I wish the doctors told you have the side effects you may get with this surgery. People would run! Unfortunately, my was in bad shape.. sad  positive thoughts!

Hi Michelle! Thanks for responding back to me! I had the loose stools in the beginning and he nausea. Then I had a week of feeling good. Then last week the nausea kicked in again with zero appetite. My doctor prescribed to me zofran so now I am constipated and the said to take miralax. Also, they prescribed sucralfate for absorbing the bile and acid  in my stomach. Which they want to take on a empty stomach which makes me nauseous too! Anxiety and depression has kicked in.. I pray things will get better!

Ann, I had diarrhea prior to GB surgery. I never knew when it would strike- awful! Last May I was prescribed  Welchol. I took it for a year and am now regular. I am in the US and think it might be psyllium husk in UK.

Don't do what I did and let depression take over. Just know that it will pass.

Had no choice. It had to come out.

Do what you have to do to be positive. I hope you have a strong support system.  One day you will wake up and feel better.

If only diarrhea was a problem.  It has lessened a bit now down to about twice a week, two years on.  Still have nausea a lot.  The depression and anxiety hasnt gone though. I take warfarin and am not sure if this isnt helping matters.  Drs cant sort it out at all.

The diarrhoea has started to ease and I have been careful with my diet. My main problem is with nausea every day upon waking.  It sometimes goes away by mid afternoon.  Some days worse than others.  Dr gave me anti nausea pills, but they dont do a lot. I try to drink lots of water and by dinnertime i can often eat chicken and rice, beef and potato etc and then want chocolate.  I am fine for the rest o day, them boom, I wake feelimg awful next day

What i dont know is if it is the diazepam dr gave me for anxiety and sleep every night, or the minute portion of anti depressant I have reduced to almost off now which is causing. morning nausea.   I can just eat dry ceral till lunchtime and cannot stand teas or other drinks.  My digestion feels all, out,of sorts.

really what im asking is does morning nausea come from this surgery,or do i need.moretests.  I had it a bit before surgery and thought that would clear it.

      .

unfortunately the depression has taken hold.  Now i dont know whether the morning nausea I have daily is from that, or from the gallbladder.  Its strange as the diarrhoea has definitely lessened but nausea hasnt.  Dr is slowly trying me with lowering anti deps but nausea seems no better, yet i can quite often eat a main meal at night, always very aware to eat blandly.  I am at a loss to know whether the nausea is the op problem or a side effect of anti dep lowering.   I have put on over a stone since being on them.

Nancy, I am plagued now by the depression and still the nausea with not much respite. Some days i can eat, some not, and never before noon.  When i swallow i feel a lump in my throat now.

the depression is feeling worse, everything is such a chore and i wake feeling im not myself.  What did de five you to try and solve all of this?

Ann, I wish I could help, but I am in the same situation. If I find an answer, I'll let you know. The anti-depressants can make you feel awful as can the post GB surgery.

Can i ask you which anti dep you have?  I have read here that dr can give welchol for nausea/diarrhoea but i havent tried anything yet.  Have you used anything at all that helped?  Do you find nausea worse in morning?   Its just awful nobody can help us.

Hi Jenn51422,  I was wondering if you have been tested for H Pylori?  I continued to have the same symptoms, (chest pain that went around to my back, weight loss, lack of appetite and nausea),  after GB removal so they decided to do a blood test.  My Helicobacter IgG was elevated.  I took in a stool sample and tested positive for H Pylori.  I am on 10 days of the antibiotic and acid reducer treatment and I am feeling good.

Hello! Thank you for responding! It’s funny you say that. I just had an upper GI done last Thursday and they are biopsy tissue to see if it is h pylori.. I’m hoping that I will have an answer soon and be treated. It’s been a long road.. Happy to hear you are feeling better! <3

I’m thinking I have had it for a few years because I have had the symptoms off and on for that long. It just continued to get worse. My function test on my gallbladder came back 0% function so it did need to come out but I believe I had H Pylori also. I am doing the antibiotics but there are several foods and drinks to help kill the bacteria that I have read about on the Internet. I hope you get an answer soon.

Thank you!! Well, good luck to both of us! Lol I have had it in the past and I too believe I had it before the removal of my gallbladder..

Hi Jenn, I was wondering what you found out with your biopsy for H Pylori?

      Hello!

Everything came back normal. I’m now going to a Chinese Medicine doctor. He does acupuncture and other treatments. Hoping I get some relief really soon. I had my first session this week and so far I feel a tiny bit better. Moving in the right direction! How are you feeling?

I am feeling much better. Sometimes in the morning I’m still a little nauseated, but I’m much better! I finished my antibiotic treatment Oct 25. I am not retested until November 29. I pray it is eradicated!! I have been eating a lot of food that helps eradicate H Pylori and helps your stomach, that I have read about on the internet,  so I haven’t ventured off too much with what I eat. I’m still a little scared of a flare up! We don’t have holistic doctors or Chinese medicine doctors in our small town but we have a really good reflexologist, so I have been going to her weekly.  I hope you get some relief soon.

I’m so happy to hear that! Hopefully, each time I go to see him it will get a little better. I’ve noticed a little diffence just with the first visit. Fingers crossed! He said I have blockages in my body that is causing my nausea. My ct scan and upper GI all came back fine. So, hopefully in time I’ll be back to my old self! Thanks for checking in! Xo
