Nausea 12 weeks after gallbladder removal

Posted , 108 users are following.

Had my gallbladder removed 12 weeks ago due to pain from 1 large stone. Had the dreaded diarrhea for 8 weeks but has settled. Have the most horrendous nausea I have ever experienced. It's worse in the mornings and I can hardly get out of bed its that bad. Some days it goes by lunchtime and I feel ok and other days it lingers until the evening and then I feel ok. Was back in hospital last week and other than a little gastritis everything is ok. My surgeon said it will go in time. I am just wondering if this happened to anyone else and how long did it take to go. Its starting to depress me now!

They have put him on several nausea medications, and that marijuana pill to help him with the appetite issue but still nothing helps.  Absolutely nothing.  He has been in the bathtub since about 6:30 am it is 8:30 . For some reason he says that hot water kinda helps.  He hasn’t been able to work and we have four kids. This entire ordeal has been a living nightmare

Kelly, the only thing that helped me was being in a car on a road trip. Don’t know why. Nausea medication did nothing.

I ended up seeing a psycharist who prescribed Mirtazapine for appetite and it worked. I began to be able to eat but remained very sick. The only thing that helped was time. I couldn’t rush it. In spite of Ace Johnson’s reassurance after a period of time I felt it was hopeless. That’s when depression came and is what I am dealing with now.

      Your husband will recover.

Hi Nancy, I’m sorry to hear what you went through and still are going through with the depression. I’m only 6 weeks post surgery and have to fight not getting depressed. I feel as though I’m getting sicker every day instead of better. I try to just keep getting through the days and eat very little. If you don’t mind me asking, how long did it take you to feel better physically? It’s really scary waking up day after day feeling so bad and you hope when you go to bed that when you’re wake up, you will feel a little better but it hasn’t happened yet for me. I know it can take quite awhile. I hope you get to feeling better mentally as I’m sure it all took a toll on you. Sending you well wishes! smile

For the physical element, have you tried working out or some type of exercise activity?  I was extremely tired for 3 months post surgery and my general doctor said I needed to start doing physical activities.  I was appalled with her initial assessment, and I initially thought she was crazy.  I didn't feel like working out since I wasn't feeling well post-surgery.  I wanted to at least give her plan a chance, so I started walking 45 minutes a day for 4-5 days a week.  After about 2 weeks of exercising, the fatigue is completely gone.  My body just needed a kick start.  I am so glad I took my doctors advice.

Johnette, you are not alone. I feel the same way too. The worst is when you eat you feel like your all gut is out of place. You become sicker. I had mine removed on July 27th. I forced myself to eat daily. I am praying we all get well soon.

Johnette, it took me 18 months to 2 years to recover. Not eating was a big mistake and led to complications.  Try to take something to increase your appetite.  Don’t he depressed. You will recover.

Did you have that pressure of being full after a few bites too? Did you have all this gas and the pain too?

      Hi Josephine,

Yes it is the worst isn’t it. I’m sorry to hear you are going through this. It is tough. What does your doctor say about the trapped wind? I feel like my doctors don’t really know how to help and there’s nothing they can do except tell you you have to give it more time to recover.  I’ve tried some different anti-nausea medications but none of them have helped. We just got to keep hanging in there and stay positive that it will get better. I hope you recover soon and get to feeling better. Hang in there!

Yes, your body needs nutrients, even if you feel full.   Try to at least get a protein shake or a vegetable shake.   I would also recommend daily multivitamins, to ensure your body is getting everything.  I also mixed in a b12 capsule, for an extra boost of energy.

I haven’t been able to exercise much but I did take a short walk with my daughter last night. I didn’t feel well but I did it anyway. It was nice to get moving some. I’m going to try and do that as much as I can and maybe build up my strength again.

Nancy, you said you were sick even after eating while recovering. Is it because you were nauseous or because you felt like your inside was upside down? Did you have a lot of belching and trapped wind?

      Hi, Johnette.

I have been taking iron pills, super b complex and vitamin c and Align(probiotic) to help me. I still have a lot of burping but the wind lessened a bit. I force myself to eat as I don't feel hungry.my mouth has no taste and I am weak and tired cause I cannot sleep.

Definitely, I agree with you. Let's stay positive.

As for me, I do some work around the house, take my daughter to school and get her from school. I do walk around the house and force myself to eat small meals despite I still feel sick.

Prayers and being positive is all we have.

I only ate soup and bland foods for the first few months, and lost 10 pounds along the way.  My nausea was bad, so I didnt really want to eat for a few months.

Once my nausea started to subside, I was able to eat other foods.  I eat normally now (4 months later), but still staying away from fatty foods and liquor.  I also eat smaller meal portions, so my digestive system doesn't have to work too hard.

Hope this helps.  Let me know if you have any other questions.

Glad to hear you are improving. Btw, when you were nauseous, did you ever feel hungry? Or you forced yourself to eat like us?

      Keep getting better🙌

Thanks for your positive comments.  We will all get better together, and slowly overcome this surgery!

The day will come when we are all back to normal.

When I was nauseous, I didn't really feel like eating; however, I would force myself to drink protein shakes, eat soup and crackers, and stay hydrated.  My nausea levels would change day to day.  As days passed though, the level of nausea started going down.  I tried keeping logs of what exactly made my nauseous, but I didn't detect any specific signals.  I believe the nausea occurred whenever it felt like coming - maybe all part of the body recovering process.

Yes, I do feel hungry, especially in the mornings and after exercising.  I typically eat smaller meals.

One word of caution, don't exercise directly after eating a meal. I did a few times and I was really nauseous.  My body was trying to digest food, but instead the blood/oxygen had to work hard because of the exercise.  Let your food digest. The process should take at least 1-2 hours.

Do you feel hungry?  Do you feel bloated at all times?

    • Posted

Do you mean if I am going for a walk after eating I have to wait to digest the food first?
    • Posted

Yes, I would personally walk first, then eat.  After eating, its good to give your body 1-2 hours of relaxation, which allows your body to focus primarily on digesting food.

I’m glad you’re feeling hungry. Are you still feeling nauseous and fatigued? I feel hungry but still have that sickly feeling all day to my stomach and just feel fatigued. What kinds of things are you eating? At least feeling hungry is a step forward! smile

I am still on a bland diet. I eat bananas, rice, chicken, porridge, bread, turkey, Swiss cheese, soups. I am still feeling weak and tired since I can't really sleep normally. I eat often. But nothing else changed.

When you say you eat normally, does it mean like you used to before? No discomfort, no pain, no rumbling inside?

My GI doctor gave me Carafate.   I take it 4 times a day on an empty stomach.

A little. I am coming from my GI DOCTOR and he prescribed IBGARD FOR THE BLOATING. I will start it tomorrow God willing.

I’m the same. The nausea and stomach sickness has been a little worse the past couple of days. I’ve been very fatigued and weak. Praying this will get better soon! Keeping positive though that it will get better. Have a great weekend!

Are you still lightheaded and dizzy? You have to force yourself to eat. That's what I do. I eat every one or two hours and drink a lot of water. Do your best to walk around the house. Take Bcomplex vitamins to help with your energy. For the trapped wind try the IBGARD . IT WILL HELP.

You are in my prayers. Have a great weekend.

Be positive! We will get better.

Hi. Yes still feeling lightheaded and also sick and/or nauseous  to my stomach all day long. I do force myself to eat often even if it’s just a very little. I’ve started a multi vitamin and take a fiber supplement. All of this has triggered daily migraines which doesn’t help. I’m working with a neurologist to get them under control. I’ve lost about 15 pounds. Still keeping up faith that it will get better.  Are you feeling any better?

Prayers for us all to recover soon! 💜

That’s good news he’s having some improvement. Keep him moving, it does help no matter how sick you feel. Prayers to him that he keeps getting better every day!

What type of symptoms does he?  How many weeks post surgery is he?

Hi Nancy, its been 22 months for me and I'm still suffering. I've reached the point where I feel like I'm never going to feel normal. But if you took 18 months to 2 years maybe wellness is just around the corner. 😊

      Cindy-

So sorry to hear you are still dealing with symptoms.  Your time is coming.  Everyone's healing is a bit different.

I will add you to my prayers.

Hang in there and be positive.  Put your mind in a good place!  Trust me, your time will come and you will be back to normal.

I have several friends/family that have been through the surgery, and they are living normal lives.
