Nausea 12 weeks after gallbladder removal

Posted , 108 users are following.

Had my gallbladder removed 12 weeks ago due to pain from 1 large stone. Had the dreaded diarrhea for 8 weeks but has settled. Have the most horrendous nausea I have ever experienced. It's worse in the mornings and I can hardly get out of bed its that bad. Some days it goes by lunchtime and I feel ok and other days it lingers until the evening and then I feel ok. Was back in hospital last week and other than a little gastritis everything is ok. My surgeon said it will go in time. I am just wondering if this happened to anyone else and how long did it take to go. Its starting to depress me now!

    Good morning everyone.

Well i got through my first work week. It was good. Nausea is still there, just not as bad. I did have to take a Zofran yesterday morning because the nausea kicked up more where i felt i was going to throw up, but the Zofran did help and by the afternoon, the nausea was gone. Wednesday and Thursday, I had good days, no nausea!

The only thing is the exhaustion. I work the 7am until 3pm shift, and around a hour in, i just wanted to go home and go to bed. Tuesday and Wednesday, i actually did go to bed after work because i was so tired. i am off for the next 3 days though so i can relax and rest.

In happy news, i found out i can cooked shrimp. i had some for dinner last night. And i ate Basil Grilled Chicken meal for lunch yesterday. It has pasta, grilled chicken, and squash in a lemon basil sauce and my stomach handled it just fine. i am still eating low fat though.

I discovered i lost another pound, but for the last week, it's been holding steady so i'm not worried. it's better than the 15lbs i lost in a week and a half when the nausea was bad and wouldn't let up. That was scary.

I still thank God everyday for my continued healing. God is good. It will be 4 weeks since my surgery on Monday, and he has brought me so far from that first 2 weeks when the nausea was bad and i couldn't hold anything down to where i am now, and i know he will continue to heal me! Through this ordeal, I've learned not to take anything for granted because it can turn real quick. I've learned to try to slow down and enjoy life.

I hope everyone has a excellent day, i still pray every night for everyone on this forum. I'm gonna be watching some college football, and resting today.

      Shannon-

Go glad to hear you made it through work a whole week. Baby steps along the way, and keeping your head up as you continue to progress. It is easy to say I wish I was all the way better; however, try to say each day is getting better and I am thankful for progress. Your positive outlook is spot on. Nausea will eventually go away, trust me. My nausea is still there, but at a much lower level from the beginning.

Great point on thanking God everyday for continued healing . Realize this is all part of his plan and you will get stronger as a person and believer. Keeping faith is key.

I continue to pray for everyone on this post as well. Keep the prayers going on.

Have a great second week at work - you got this. This week will be even better.

i had my gallbladder removed almost 12 weeks ago now. i wake up most mornings around 4-5am feeling sick & vomit bile. its driving me crazy, making me tired & miserable.

      Hi

I'm sorry you are still feeling bad. What has your doctor told you? I had my GB out almost 5 weeks ago. I had gallstones and my GB was thickening on one wall. I had to have emergency surgery. After surgery, I was really sick. I had constant nausea and throwing up. I was miserable. I lost 15lbs in a week and a half. It was scary. I prayed to god every hour to help me and take everything away. It was not a fun time.

After 2 weeks the nausea started letting up a little. Still right now, my nausea comes and goes, but i can tolerate it better. Has your doctor gave you anti nausea meds?

The meds mine gave me didnt help at first. He gave me Zofran. Now whenever i have a bad day with the nausea i take a Zofran and it helps a little. I also take ginger capsules in the morning and for the most part it helps. I also take tagamet when i get heartburn. i am also on a low fat diet. i don't know if your doctor has said anything about that.

I know its easier said than done, but try to keep a positive attitude. I didnt at first and i felt myself trying to give up. We will all get through this. This forum has helped.

I still pray nightly for everyone on this forum that we will all recover. We all just need to take it a day at a time.

just a quick update on me:

I am doing better today. Had nausea this morning, but it has went to a minimum this afternoon so far. But now my stomach is cramping up so i have to be near a restroom, but i'm consipated. i started back taking metamucil last night so hopefully that will help. i was supposed to go to a football game today, but now i had to miss it. we got free tickets to it. i sent my husband and kids without me. i dont want to keep them from having fun just because i cant right now. all of it is frustrating. i'm gonna relax right now, and watch tv, and try not to feel sorry for myself that i cant go do things with my family yet. Hope everyone is having a good weekend.

Hang in there Shannon. Stay positive as much as you can. I know it is a hard task. Discover what puts you in a HAPPY place. Look at pictures of family/etc.

I like to continuously re-read a list of other most vital organs in my body that are working just great and integral to my living. (Brain/Heart/Liver/Lungs/Spleen/Kidney). The gallbladder plays a part in your body, but is not as important as these other human organs, which is why they can remove. Just another spin I try to use when I get down. Trust me, I have been through the same emotional roller coaster. Stay positive and smile- sometimes I feel like when I do that, it makes the bad feeling go away. Be patient throughout the process. The light is at the end of the tunnel.

Lets all take a quick moment and pray for each others situation and thank god for the blessing of our lives. Lord, give us mental and physical strength. This is just a chapter god put us through. He would not have put us through if he didn't believe we will learn and be stronger person.

      Prayers for everyone!

how have you been feeling John? any improvement over the last couple weeks?

    • Posted

Feeling good. Each day/week that passes, I have been feeling gradually better. Symptoms reside as the body adjusts. The body just needs time to heal, as a major organ has been removed from the body.

I owe it all to Jesus.

I continue to pray for everyone on this post.

      Hi Johnette

just seeing how you are doing in these last couple of weeks.

      Hi Shannon,

I'm hanging in there! Still nauseous every day, it's worse in the mornings and comes and goes throughout the day. Which is an improvement from before when I'd be nauseous all day long. Been getting pain that comes and goes in my abdomen and back. I've also been getting daily headaches. Just taking it day by day and praying it will all settle down soon. My doctor said it can take 6 months to a year for the body to adjust and others have recovered when they had prolonged symptoms after the surgery, so I'm trying to remember that and it will get better. I try and stay positive and keep my mind occupied it helps in getting through the day. How are you feeling?

      Johnette

Thats great that the nausea is subsiding a little for you! baby steps, but any improvement is a wonderful thing. That stinks that you are getting the headaches and pain. i pray that it settles down for you soon.

As for me, my nausea also seems to be worse in the morning, and for the last few days its settling down in the afternoon. Thank God for any improvement! I cant eat still during the day though, but i drink water and pedialyte. i have a appointment with a GI doctor in 11 days so i am hoping to get answers to why im still sick.

I still get a lot of anxiety when i wake up in the morning. i dont know if thats a side effect of the post surgery, or because im nervous cause im still sick. it makes me visably shake.

Still praying for everyone for our healing.

Agreed, thankful for any improvement. I also have anxiety in the morning but I try and just relax and it passes. I've had a ton of tests and everything comes back ok, so I guess I'm just one of those people who it takes longer for my body to heal and adjust after the surgery. I'm 11 weeks post op. Just have to give it more time. Try and eat a little if you can and even if you're nauseous. Even if its a bite of something here and there. It has made me feel better to eat some. I don't eat much and low fat but I try to eat every couple of hours, even if its just a few crackers. I hope you feel better soon. It will get better. WE WILL RECOVER!

yes im definitely learning patience after this surgery. Patience is not something i deal with well. im almost 6 weeks post op.

I will have to try to relax. Even before the surgery i had a little anxiety, though it wasnt this bad. ive always been a worrier. my husband constantly has to tell me to relax.

    • Posted

I feel for you Shannon! It does take patience which is hard when you're feeling bad. It's not easy but there's no other choice we have. I pray several times a day for continued improvements and that we all get better soon.

I continue to pray for you Shannon and Johnette. Patience and positive thoughts are key in this time. Gallbladder surgery is a serious surgery, one I wish our doctors educated us better on.

Bodies need time to heel and adjust to the new internal digestive flow. Rest your bodies, and trust me you will get better. Try not to think something else is wrong with you, or research other symptoms, cause it will bring undue stress.

We will be back to normal soon. Some people just take a little more time than others.

      PRAYERS

      John
