Nausea 12 weeks after gallbladder removal

Posted , 108 users are following.

Had my gallbladder removed 12 weeks ago due to pain from 1 large stone. Had the dreaded diarrhea for 8 weeks but has settled. Have the most horrendous nausea I have ever experienced. It's worse in the mornings and I can hardly get out of bed its that bad. Some days it goes by lunchtime and I feel ok and other days it lingers until the evening and then I feel ok. Was back in hospital last week and other than a little gastritis everything is ok. My surgeon said it will go in time. I am just wondering if this happened to anyone else and how long did it take to go. Its starting to depress me now!

    Nancy-

You mention 2 years - is that when you started feeling 100% back to normal?

What were your symptoms along the way?

I like your comment about patience. If you aren't, depression may kick in. I was depressed early on, but now I just try to be as patient as possible.

Any other advice for all of us?

    Your help is greatly appreciated.

    hello everyone,

here with another update. i ended up relapsing with the bacterial infection and had to go back on the medicine. I'm coming to the end of the medicine now. Nausea still comes and goes, but i've tried to push past it. When it gets bad, I take Zofran and Phenagren. Sometimes it helps, sometimes it only takes the edge off. I'm back at work part time in the morning.

March 24th will be 6 months after my gallbladder surgery. i still get exhausted easy. When i'm not at work, i spend most of my time in bed. I still eat bland. Sometimes i try to eat something not bland, and sometimes it will agree with me, sometimes it won't. I take Melatonin at night to help me sleep or else i wouldn't.

My biggest thing i'm battling is anxiety and depression. I'm on a anti anxiety medicine now, and it helps by taking the edge off, but some days it doesn't seem to help because i develop this feeling of dread, like i'm dead inside. It's not a fun feeling. i don't wish these feelings on anyone.

So thats where i'm at. I thank God for bringing me this far, but i still have a long way to go. I hope everyone is doing ok. This thread has pretty much died.

      Shannon-

Prayers continue for you and your situation. Trust me, you will be back to normal, like you were before the surgery. God put you through this test, and knew how strong of a person you are. You will prevail and be stronger.

So glad to hear you are back at work. Great news.

Continue to listen to your body and if you need more rest, get more rest.

As far as anxiety, try a little meditation in the morning, where you list out what you are blessed/thankful for, along with some deep breathing/relaxation techniques.

Also, your mindset has to be in a positive state, and not in a worried and tense state. When your mind wanders to a worried state, you have to hit that reset button.

Prayers to you. I am confident you will conquer!

      John

I did have my gallbladder removed a little over a year ago.

Month 7-8 was the turning point for me.

I still have a little nausea, but not as bad as I used to get.

In the beginning, I couldnt eat and lost 15 pounds.

    thanks John

It's good t it's at your nausea has eased.

please could you tell me whether your nausea was related to eating or not? mine seems to come on even if I havn't eaten. my gall bladder was removed because it got inflamed/ infected twice. I didnt have gallstones but I did have gall bile sludge.

I'm wondering whether it might be due to something else eg gastritis?

did you ever find out the cause of your nausea?

    thanks

    Maggie

My nausea came directly after surgery. I never had nausea in my entire life.

The nausea just came and went. I went to GI doctor and they gave me a prescription to help ease the nausea. Apparently the prescription helps line the stomach. I cant recall the name of the medicine.

hi I am new to this blog and I hope I can get some help. i had gallbadder removed almost 3 weeks ago and have started having really bad nausea, bad appetite, and can't eat a big meal my portions are very small and fill up quickly, also feel bloated. I just feel alot of discomfort in my belly is any of this normal? I would greatly appreciate any feedback.

I had very similar symptoms. I am not sure if symptoms are same for everyone though.

Please let me know if you have any other questions. I went through the surgery and know exactly what you are feeling.

Hang in there and be positive. I was negative (and always worried), which I think made my healing process longer.

This is very typical and normal. There are lots of videos on UTube if you want to educate yourself on what to expect. you should be eating small portions regularly to give your system the opportunity to digest. c

Consider taking Ox bile supplements and digestive enzymes. Mine settled down by about week 6.

I've had my gallbladder taken out about a month a go and I'm still have pain in the right side of my belly as well as my shoulder and all over my belly it is a sharp pulling pain I'm nauseous every day no matter what I eat I've have been sticking to only things with low fat before the surgery i used to sleep on my left side at night but now I can only lay on my left side for only a few minutes until the pain comes back and as for my right side no way so I'm forced to sleep on my back alot of times I wake up with a sore neck and back from sleeping this stuff really sucks

I had my gall bladder removed laparoscopically about 3 months ago and it took a good 6 weeks before I felt back to normal. I was nauseous intermittently for about 4 weeks and very much had to be careful with food. I started taking Ox Bile salts to aid fat digestion. not because I ate a lot of fatty food but because I wanted the good days I eat e.g. avocados, nuts, eggs, oily fish to be efficiently digested. Remember, u have had a major operation and it takes time for your body to settle. sleeping on your back is better for your spine so get accustomed to it!!

So i realize that i haven't updated in quite awhile, i think 6 months, so it has been over a year since my gallbladder surgery. my surgery was 9/24/18. Anyway, i was treated for the bacterial infection i had and it finally went away. my doctor thinks i got it in one of the many ER visits i've had. It is called c Diff and it is highly contagious.

So i got rid of that, but i still had nausea. GI didn't know what was going on. She kept doing tests so in May i had a GES or Gastric Emptying Study, and i finally have a diagnosis.

i have Gastroparesis which means my stomach is slow to digest food so it sits there and starts to rot which causes the nausea and vomiting. It is a chronic illness so it has no cure. It can go into remission for months, but it always comes back. I've been in remission for the last 3 months, but last week all my symptoms came back. There is not really any medications out there for GP. i take 2 different anti nausea medicines that half work when i flare. Also when i flare, i can only tolerate protein shakes, chicken noodle soup, and chicken broth. Even when i'm not flaring i have to be careful what i eat. Low fiber, soft, easy to digest foods. no nuts, no raw veggies, no fruits with peels.

My GI thinks it was caused by my gallbladder surgery. One of the suspected causes is when the vagus nerve gets damaged.

So thats where i'm at. I quit my job back in March because i was missing so many days, and I haven't been back to work since. My flare ups are too unpredictable. I'm in the middle of filing for disability.

Hi, what makes you think you have gastritis. I also had my gall bladder removed and experienced the same symptoms. I also think I might have gastritis. what are your symptoms? hope you get better soon.

      Hi,

I have been feeling better here lately. I take it day by day. I understand that it's scary. Back when I first had the surgery, I was scared out of my mind. I didn't know what was going on. I felt betrayed by my body. I was diagnosed with mild gastritis. I was just given a antacid to take. Eventually i got my diagnosis and now i'm dealing with that. I know it's scary now, and it seems hopeless, but you have to try to stay positive. I let my mind drift to dark places, and i ended up with depression which is another beast to deal with.

Have you seen your doctor? Have they done any testing? Don't think you will end up like me. Everyone is different.

    • Posted

yes i was that way 3 weeks post op. unfortunately, i still have fatigue. that hasn't went away and i'm almost 14 months post op. i don't have chills anymore that took a few months to go away. Right now i don't have vomiting, but it could always come back because of the digestive disorder i have.

      hello,

I recently had a gastric emptying exam and that came up positive. The doctor still hasnt confirmed gastroparesis since I have a bile duct stent that he needs to remove and he wants to rule pancreatitis out. I am almost 6 weeks post op and I am still nauseous and have pain when I eat. The doctor is hoping this is only temporary or corrects with diet. Are you taking any motility medication?

Did you ever get heartburn and bile? I have had a lot of it and now have to go with my gi again and getting a endoscopy. I cant eat anything because i feel heartburn right away and nausea.
