Nausea 12 weeks after gallbladder removal

Posted , 108 users are following.

Had my gallbladder removed 12 weeks ago due to pain from 1 large stone. Had the dreaded diarrhea for 8 weeks but has settled. Have the most horrendous nausea I have ever experienced. It's worse in the mornings and I can hardly get out of bed its that bad. Some days it goes by lunchtime and I feel ok and other days it lingers until the evening and then I feel ok. Was back in hospital last week and other than a little gastritis everything is ok. My surgeon said it will go in time. I am just wondering if this happened to anyone else and how long did it take to go. Its starting to depress me now!

Hi, I sympathise, I am going through the same thing.

I probably shouldn't do this but I take 100mg of Tramadol to (a) stop the lower bowel pain, and (b) try to "bind" me up.

In my case (b) is not working. Like you I am having this on a daily basis, so I am going to see my GP today. ( I live in North Wales UK)

I am a "Good Coffee Addict" but ONLY two cups in the morning, I know coffee is a bowel irritant, but where do we draw the line!!!

    James.

Hi James when did you have your surgery? I tried lots of meds for diarrhea immodium, bile binders etc and the best thing I found was psyllium husk powder. It soaked up all the bile. I took 1 teaspoon twice a day. I am now off the psyllium husk fibre after 18 months since my

Operation and now have the opposite problem! I recently spent a week in hospital due to a blockage in my bowel which they've attributed to too much fiber in my diet! I had been getting constipated on and off over the last 6 months and was afraid to stop the psyllium husk so increased my fiber intake which made things worse and I ended up with a blockage and severe dehydration. I am fine now and am so happy after all this time and nightmare that I suffered that things settled themselves. I had truly believed I would be on the psyllium husk for life. Give it time as it takes the liver time to adjust to no gallbladder. I'm still dealing with some hormone issues which I believe are connected but im a lot better than I was and am med free. Good luck

    Acejohnston,

My name is Ryan and my son who is 10 had gallbladder surgery in January of 2016, it is now July 2016 and he has been sick the entire time.  He spends most of his days in a complete Nausious state.  I saw your post was a year ago, did it change?  Did you do anything to help it?  Did it just go away?  Just seeing if there is anything i can do to help my son.  Thanks

      Hi Ryan,

I'm so sorry to read this and feel for you and your son. The nausea is horrendous. I had it for a very long time and diarrhea too. It did go and the diarrhea and can eat anything now. I also have a friend whose daughter had it removed at 10 too and she had nausea and dry wretching for 9-10 months and then it stopped. Can you get him the acupressure bands for his wrists. I found they helped and I also did acupuncture and made ginger tea which helped too. Ginger is great for nausea. I was on lots of anti sickness meds but they made me feel worse so stopped them. I have since spoken to many people who had the nausea and vomiting and diarrhea and for most it went within 6-12 months. I also took milk thistle to help detox my liver but am not sure about giving that to a 10 year old. I lived on soup and crackers and toast and bananas and the smell of food would even make me ill. It's so awful to hear of someone so young going through this but it will settle down but just takes time unfortunately. The other thing I did was elevate the head of my bed and slept on high pillows which was recommended to me by another person who had the operation years ago and couldn't get out of bed for 9 months afterwards too. It will pass as they told me it would. Keep positive if you can. Take care and keep me posted X

He is misrable!!!  It really never goes away.  He is sick everyday and nothing seems to work.  I just needed to know if it eventually goes away.  There really isn't a day that goes by that he is not neausious.  I feel for him and he missed his entire 4th grade year and is apporching the end of this summer a test to get into 5th grade.  I just don't want it to continue- im not sure what is worse the terrible pain he was in or the terrible nausia.  His quality of life consists of sitting in a room... We try to make him do things but for the most he feels like he will throw up.  Thank you for your time- I am so sorry for how long you have had to suffer.  If anyone every has to have what my son has- I would do anything to fix it.

I saw you recommended Milk Thisle and Lepicol Plus to someone-would those help with Nausea.  Ginger does nothing-in any form.  We have also gotten more tests and everything comes back negative.  So after reading your posts I now believe it is related to having his Gallbladder removed.

It is. All his bile that dumps into the tummy is what causes nausea, or diahrea. It took me 12 months to go away, and even now at my year mark I sometimes get it, but not like it use to be. It does away, but it takes time . Bless his little heart, I hope time passes quickly for him to adjust.

Has he diarrhea too? I took the lepicol plus for the diarrhea as was recommended by a woman who had similar symptoms. The milk thistle definitely helped me as its a herb for the liver. It helps the liver do its job better. I would recommend the drops and just start by giving him 5 drops per day and after a few days of he tolerates it do 5 drops twice a day and work from there. The liver has to now learn how to regulate the flow of bile. It's lost it's partner in crime so has to learn the function of the gallbladder which unfortunately for some of us can take time. My surgeon and GI doc were useless but my primary care doc had seen a number of her patients suffer with the same symptoms after gallbladder removal and she explained it to me and said it would stop. The poor child. I feel for you all. It's very debilitating and I found it awful that people just said get on wit it! They obviously never experienced it themselves! What pains is he having? X

I'm not sure if it is possible but it would encourage my son so much to hear from someone who has suffered like him and could let him know you understand and that it will soon pass. Not sure how this works but I know it would encourage him. He has cramping, but mostly nausea all day. Worse morning, afternoon and night.

      Thanks.

Ryan, it breaks my heart to hear that a child has to go through this. Just let him know that it is not forever and keep him positive and stay positive yourself.

hi I'm new to this page and realize this is an old post but did your son ever get better? I think a lot of this nausea is caused from bile reflux.

I had my gallbladder removed over 4 years ago and never put the dabilitating nausea I have been experiencing down to it being removed!   Tomorrow, I am going to talk to the doctor who took it out and see what he thinks might be going on.  I just had another "attack" of nausea yesterday about 11pm.  I was in the middle of taking a shower when this one hit me.  I felt EXTREMELY sick to my stocmach and had to force myself to get dried off and dressed for bed.  I could only tolerate drying off and getting in bed.  Moving or movement of any kind made me feel 100 times worse!  I have nausea pills that help me get through sometimes.  I have to lie motionless, nothing to eat, nothing to drink unless it's a few swallows of water tak.  I slept for a looong time and woke up around 3:30 pm.  I felt better the rest of the day too.  I was sick almost 2 months ago and was really worried when I was going to be hit with it again and BAM last night it happened.  I hope that your situation has gotten better!  I found your post during a search and figured I would let you know that you are not alone!  I know about the nausea and it is horrible!  If you are still following up on your post, I hope to hear from you! God bless and take care!

Kellie, I hate to hear that 4 years out you are still having nausea. How often does it hit you?

Thing with my "situation" was, I had NO symptoms that would lead me to believe that I had gall bladder issues!  Nothing!  Gallstones were found I was getting a scan of my buttock/inner thigh area to see if my NP or Pain Management doctor could see the condition of my sciatic nerve.  When the surgeon, who was going to perform the gallbladder removal, was pressing on my stomach in different areas, there was NO pain to the touch!  I just relied on their word; which is scary to think about!

Crystal are your symptoms worse at different times during your cycle? What age are you? What I can tell you is that my symptoms were worse leading up to my period. I now believe in my case my gallbladder issues were linked to my hormones. My surgeon told me on the operating table gallbladder problems are most common in women in their forties due to fluctuating hormone levels in advance of menopause. Progesterone levels begin to decline at a faster rate than estrogen levels causing an imbalance in the ratio of progesterone to estrogen causing estrogen dominance. This is what caused my gallbladder problems as I've since been diagnosed with menopause. Nausea and all my other symptoms are common in menopause as well as gallbladder problems and cysts which I also had which I now know caused my vomiting. I'm not sure if you still have your gallbladder but if you do you look at increasing your progesterone levels which should help you and eat a processed food free diet with organic food especially meat were possible and cut out dairy if you can and as little sugar as possible. Hope this helps. X

Kellie it's dreadful your gallbladder was removed and you had no symptoms. I only had the pain a month and now know in my case it was linked to my hormones as I've since been diagnosed as in menopause at 44. Removing my gallbladder made the symptoms much worse as my already struggling lover became even more stressed. Is your nausea linked to your cycle at all? Mine most definitely was and is still at times especially around ovulation and period time but in my case this is because I'm not ovulating and my hormone levels are low and I have irregular periods. I was having hormonal symptoms prior to my gallbladder removal too and cyclical nausea but put everything down to the 1 gallstone I had. My gallbladder wasn't inflamed at all and sadly I believe it should not have been removed as in my case it was a symptom of perimenopause but no one checked my hormones!! I now take high strength b complex which has helped and other herbs which also help a lot with symptoms. I joined the menopause group here too and realised that others were having similar symptoms including nausea and gallbladder issues. I'm not sure of your age but it's possible it could be linked to a hormone imbalance. Take care x
