Nausea 12 weeks after gallbladder removal

Had my gallbladder removed 12 weeks ago due to pain from 1 large stone. Had the dreaded diarrhea for 8 weeks but has settled. Have the most horrendous nausea I have ever experienced. It's worse in the mornings and I can hardly get out of bed its that bad. Some days it goes by lunchtime and I feel ok and other days it lingers until the evening and then I feel ok. Was back in hospital last week and other than a little gastritis everything is ok. My surgeon said it will go in time. I am just wondering if this happened to anyone else and how long did it take to go. Its starting to depress me now!

Its been 2 months since my gallbladder had been removed. I have serious nausea after every meal. Even when I have something as healthy as a salad. Ugh! Its getting depressing for me too, I feel like that's it I can't eat anything and sometimes I rather skip meals so I dont feel sick. I didn't know at all this was something to be expected. Ugh! So I'm guessing I have another 5 months before I start feeling better????

My son is diabetic and just had part of hi right leg removed and on top of it had his gall bladder out, he is so sick! He is constantly in the bathroom, and is pretty much stuck in the houe, since he has no prosthetic yet.
I was glad to see how other people were posting so I could see that he is not alone. We are going to see his doctor this afetrnoon to hopefully get some answers. Hope you get well soon and can get back on track with your life. Here's wishing you good health.

Thank you Sally. Am so sorry to hear about your son. He's been through a lot. The diarrhea will settle down it just takes time. For most it takes six to twelve weeks. For me it was a bit longer but it did go in fact I suffer from the opposite now! I hope your son feels better soon. Give him my very best. Take care X

Hi everyone,
I got my gall bladder removed January 7th 2016 and it is now the 26th of November 2016, and I have had side effects that I was not aware of that are apparently common (thanks doctors for telling me...).
My gall bladder had a stone and they convinced me it was better to get it removed, luckily I did because it was beginning to enflame.
My side effects include IBS symptoms, Indigestion, diarrhea, severe nausea, bloating, gas, and motion sickness.
I did not have IBS or motion sickness before my operation and was only in severe pain from the gall bladder. I would have preferred folding over in pain as to nausea and running to the toilet in public every two minutes. Oh, I also became lactose intolerant. Cannot even eat a single square of chocolate otherwise I have to go to the bathroom. If some people have these symptoms settling in 8-12 months, then I hope it settles for me soon as it has been 11 months... Should I talk to my doctor about this? I'm scared of endoscopies and anethesia... but i feel that that is the next step.
I hope you are all doing better now though, and that your nausea and symptoms have stopped finally! We can all get through this.
Cass x

I had my gallbladder surgery a month ago. I have been nauseous and I have had diarrhea off and on. I don't have much of an appetite. I lost 12 lbs so far. I am sick to my stomach all of the time. I called my doctor today and she called in a prescription for zofran for me. I will have to see how things go.

I had mine removed also. It was wierd. I suddenly developed what I though was bad indegestion and then It went very bad. The ER Doctor said mine was one of the worst cases he had ever seen. No symptoms prior to that dreadfull day/ night. Now I get stomack cramps. Last night I got zero sleep and I have been in pain all day. Frankly this sucks. I am 59 years old. I have a bad liver. I use to drink so now I guess I am picking up my own tab. Doesnt make it any better. And I just realized that spell check isnt working on this " reply" so This will really read bad also.

I have been reading all of your comments for the last hour and decided to jump in with my own experience.
It started about 3 1/2 years ago. I would get sick when I ate. At first these episodes would be spaced weeks apart, but after about nine months they became constant. Tests showed I had sludge in my GB, so without doing any other tests, I had my GB out. I felt ok for about 2 months, and then it all started again but even worse. At that point I had numerous gastric tests done including a brain scan. An ulcer was found which healed in about 6 weeks using a ppi. I thought that was the end of it, but it wasn't. The nausea got even worse; couldn't eat and weight dropped from 139 to 113. I became malnourished and was so weak I couldn't get out of the bed, stand in the shower or even write my name. While all this was going on, I was seen by gastrologists and an endrocronoligist at 4 major hospitals while haveing more of the same gastric tests. The only thing the tests showed was some acid reflux and bile. I can't tell you how bad I felt. The only way to describe it is to say that I felt as if I had the flu all the time; that is without the chills, fever or muscle aches. My GB came out in May of 2014 and a year later I was far worse than I had ever been. In July of 2015 I was admitted to the hospital for 3 days and then left with precriptions for Mirtazapine (depression and appetite), Carafate and Welchol (binds the bile). That was 6 months ago. I think my problems had been exaberated because I was malnourished and terribly weak.
It is now 6 months after the hospital stay and a year and 7 months since the GB came out. I have gained up to 128 lbs and am better but far from well. My primary symptom is nausea but no vomiting. I just feel sick constantly during the day. Many of you comented on the nausea subsiding as the day went on; I feel pretty good in the evening and am not sick again until the next morning when I get up.
All of this has changed my life. I can't make any plans since I never know if I can leave the house, and I have had to quite work. One of the worst parts about this is the depression I feel not knowing if it will ever go away or is this it.
Thanks to all of you who contributed to this topic. It helps so much to know that there are others who have had similiar experiences, although I wouldn't wish this on anyone. Because of your comments, I will try several of the remidies that you have mentioned including accupuncture.
It's been some time since anyone added to this, so I hope that means you are all much better and enjoying life.

Nancy I'm so sorry to read this. It really upsets me that so many people are left with long term side effects after this surgery which sadly can be prevented in a lot of cases. Have you had your hormone levels tested and what age are you? Gallbladder problems are more prevalent in women over a certain age due to mainly fluctuating hormone levels. There are also a number of drugs that increase the risk of gallbladder issues mainly hormone meds and it is stated as a possible side effect on many meds. It's over two years now since mine was removed. I suffer from constipation a lot which I never has before. The nausea I had was due to a large cyst on my ovary and sadly in my case my surgeon thought the 1 gallstone I had was causing my problems when in fact it was the cyst. I am a lot better but have the nausea again but it's because I have another cyst. I was also prescribed Mirap when I was vomiting and had the nausea and I was really anxious and upset over my symptoms. I stopped it after a few weeks and went to a naturopathic doctor who tested my hormones and told me I was near menopause which she believed was causing all my problems including my gallbladder. I take high strength b complex which helps aid the Break down of estrogen and is also good for nausea. B6 in particular is vital for hormones and the liver and nausea. I had stupidly stopped taking this and suspect that's when I developed this new cyst. I also take high strength vitamin c which I find really helps. I can eat what I want now but only eat small amounts at a time and little and often as eating too much is not good for the liver which is already in a stressed state with its partner in crime gone. It can take 2 years for it all to settle down. I had the diarrhea for a year. Do you have bile diarrhea also? I took psyllium husk powder for the year I had diarrhea and it really helped. anxiety is a common symptom after gallbladder removal as our livers which were already stressed become even more stressed as it has now taken on the function of the gallbladder. Take care

I'm literally throwing up as I'm writing this...12 weeks post-gallbladder removal and in the last 8 weeks alone I have thrown up over (I'm checking my phone tally chart, threw bup again whew) Over 217 times, and that is 217 sessions of throwing up, not just throwing up once each time. And that doesn't even include the 4 times I threw up while writing this.
?I know how you feel, I was hospitalised for over half a month from nausea pre surgery and am trying so hard not to go back.
?I hope you are better now, I'm still looking for answers, I hope youo have found yours. In the meantime, the dizziness is fought with calm and the vomiting and nausea with mint.
Best,
Rae
