Nausea on waking

i have this strange problem that on some days i am dreaming of somebody being sick then i wake with nausea which can last during day, then able to eat at tratime.  This has been happening for a while and i am diagnosed with anxiety but what i cannot understand is i go to bed feeling fine, eating ok then the cruel awakening.

i think it has been worse since gallbladder came out.

Dietician has put me on low fodmap diet which has helped ibs d i think so far.

so fed up waking with this.  Dr says try zantac as it may be acid but i have no heartburn since gallbladder gone. Frightened ro take it as some people say it makes them feel worse.

imiserable feeling like this and just need an answer.

hi anne,  i have acid reflux (non silent)  and wake up with a nauseaous feeling more than once, usually due to eating too late before bed, as i currently have an attack ongoing now im carefull of what i eat, after seeing this fodmap mentioned i have looked into to see if its suitable for reflux, so far as i can tell itmaybe isnt or needs to be adapted to suit each individual, onions, tomatoes, spices, fatty foods, milk and some fruits are triggers, one thing i noticed this week i have started taking  mega acidophilus and have noticed a big improvement in the reduction of my burping and passing wind the other end and a reduction in the severity of the pain in my left side flank, although still there just reduced (no diagnosis on this), im on omeprazole twice a day for life, maybe worth a trial on this as being on ant acids for a long time destroys the good bacteria in your gut, im not a fan of probiotic yogurts or drinks so picked these tablets up, wether its a placebo effect or really working time will tell

I am trying so hard with his Fodmap diet but its too early to tell if its working.  I take warfarin so not sure if i can use acidophilus will have to check.

My dietitian has taken onions, spices and all fatty food out, together with lactose.  I am stll able to have chicken, meat, fish and potatoes, rice, or gluten free pastas.   Man made sauces are out though.

I havent tried probiotic yogurts but they seem to help some people.

thinking about trying the zantac to see if it helps.

      Hi ann55375

Also add to your diet probiotic tabs from the health shop to keep your good stomach flora in tact..they really help me. I take probiotic yogurts as well..best wishes...

hi anna i was on omeprzole for 20+ years when dr took me off the in january 2016, was fine for a few monthes then woke realy bad, i bought zantac and had no effect, dr put me lansprazole along with gaviscon and it didnt touch the sides, back on the omeprazole and its reduced but not 100% even though on double the dose, its slowly got better, dont think i could do the fodmap diet as i need to gain weight not lose more, guess its a waiting game at the moment as its all i seem to do these days, wait for results, wait for appointments, currently waiting on some medication specialist is going to reccomend to my dr, got more blood results to wait for as dr didnt include those when sending information, seems like my care has been transferred to the hospital now, full ab scan last week was told by the person doing it that there was nothing concerning there. i can cope with the symptoms as they stand now but itwould be good to get none sometimes, if you like spag bol type dishes you can find tomatoe free sauce recipes online, i tried one and although it looked and tasted  little different it was good.

I have had the same thing since my gallbladder came out 19 months ago. I just want it to go away.

Oh how i agree with you, didnt reaalise there was a down side to this op and my general level of fitness has plummeted since.  The ibs has been worse since the op and i had hoped it would fix it.  Makes doing anything a chore and now feeling quite depressed about it all.  Will try the zantac as dr suggested but whether it takes nausea away or aggravates ibs i will have to wait and see.  What have they done ro help you?

I am taking Welchol and Carafate suspension. Also taking a probiotic, stomach enzymes and vitamins. The later I have prescribed to myself. This has been going on for so long and has changed my life. I have very little energy and stay in the bed a lot. Overall I am better and can only hope that continues.

I don't think this is normal for post gb removal, but judging from this forum, there are those who have big problems for a long time.

This forum has been a big help to me. You might want check out Casey and Acejohnston on Patient. Their stories were similar to mine.

The anxiety and depression seem to go along with this which is understandable.

      Take care and stay positive.

What a lovely reply.  I now dont feel such a fraud as people just dont understand our problems, even gps seem pretty unconcerned.  I find the fatigue debilitating and have had no luck with anti depressants. Have you? Wonder why i drew the short straw and my friends who have had theirs out are all at aerobics, golf etc.

Yes, I do take an antidepressant. It's a low dose of Remeren. It's more for appetite and anxiety than depression, at least for me. This has gone on for so long and many times has been so severe that anxiety and depression have been the natural result.

You're right when you say that no one understands and that doctors don't take it seriously. This makes the whole thing even worse.

I feel as if I have a virus or the flu most of the time. Occasionally I feel fine, and then it comes back. Also evenings are better.

      This is one strange condition.

Can you suggest anything i should ask gp to do to see why this is happening - its just not normal to feel so ill.  I have woken feeling sick again, taken a buccastem for it but just feel really low.  Yes, evening can be better and i can eat but have ro push it.   Some days better than others.  Because of my pulmonary embolisms i have to take warfarin and i thinkmit doesnt help.  Someone has suggested endocrine tests for thyroid problem would be a possibility.

      Hi anne55375

Ask your gp to test your B12 levels and your adrenal and cortisol levels.

If your B12 is low you can feel very ill and it affects your digestive system and if your adrenals and cortisol levels are off kilter. This can happen after the trauma of an operation. abnormal levels of B12 and cortisol can make you feel very weak and extremely tired and generally unwell....hope you can get an answer it's no fun feeling like that day after day...my very best wishes to you ann...

My throat is full and I feel sick. Sometimes the sick feeling is like a nausea and sometimes is just "sick" as in the flu or a virus (without chills or muscle aches). I don't vomit.

Maybe the full throat is the acid reflux. I feel better when my throat is not full. The reflux is silent as I don't have heartburn. The gastric tests did show  reflux.

I wish I knew of a medication that would work. PPIs don't seem to help.

Ann, I can tell you what I have done. I saw 4 gastrointrologists and had many tests done. The only thing tests showed was reflux and bile. The meds for this didn't work for me. Then I went to see an endocrinologist, and that was all negative. Next step was my gyno doctor for a harmone test. I think that will be negative as well. In the meantime, I am wearing a patch.

      I even tried acupuncture.

This has been going on for 4 years. I had my GB out 20 months ago because I felt so bad and the test showed that I had sludge. after the GB came out, I felt good for 2 months and then it all hit again.

I am better than I was last summer or I couldn't be writing this. If I continue to improve (I have a long way to go), I won't forget the peope on this forum and will continue to write so that others can see a light at the end of the tunnel.

      Hi nancy6309

You need to have a full blood count and all your endoctrine system tested this includes adrenals, cortisol, thyroid, hormones and your B12 and Bvits...if all these bodily functions are off kilter it can play havoc with your system including digestive system. You must ask your doc to all these tests....i do hope you get your doc to do these tests some docs think they know your body better than you do.....hope you get a diagnosis soon Nancy....my sincere best wishes to you.....

I have been to a glandular doctor, had my harmones checked by my gynocologist, full blood work at 4 major hospitals and seen gastrointrologists at each hospital and had many gastro tests including two

CAT scans and a brain scan. All were negative except for acid reflux and bile. All of this after my gallbladder came out 20 months ago.

My next stop will be Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

Ask for a SECHAT scan to look for bile acid malabsorption  which can occur after gallbladder removal. If you do have this, it can be treated.

I am really scared of more tests. What happens in a SECHAT scan? Is it invasive? Does it take long?   I have a phobia of hospitals due to bad experience which has left me with anxiety.

Pippa, I do have bile which was detected by a scan.  I take Welchol Is there anything else to take?
    • Posted

At the first appointment time, you will be asked to swallow a capsule with a drink of water. This capsule contains a synthetic bile salt which is slightly radioactive.  The scan examines the functions of your bowel.

You will return to the department three hours later and again one week later for pictures to be taken. You will be asked to lie on your back on a scanning bed and a special camera will take a picture. The picture takes five minutes, during which time you will be asked to lie still and breathe normally.

You do not have to remove any clothing. You will not be enclosed in a tunnel and you will not be left alone during the scan.

Not yet but i want to ask if I could try them.  Do you think she. Ifht let me do that without having more tests first

You could ask your doctor first and she what she says.

      Hi nancy76309

B12 blood tests are not automatically carried out in a full blood count...it something you will have to request.....i would most definitely ask for a B12 test because if you are B12 deficient it can csuse a lot of bodily issues i.e gastro problems plus other problems....best wishes...

Hi Nancy, how is your stomach now?  Are you still on the mirtazapine?  I am still on it, still, having tummy trouble but have found that Fodmap has helped cutting out gluten and lactose. Suffer on less number of days. Still down and anxious about it all.  Did you get B12 test. i will ask next time too.

Yes am still on it- 15 mg. I have few good day but most are bad. The depression is bad too. If I thought there was an end in sight, I could take it. I am trying to find a nutritionist.

So happy to hear that Foopmap has helped you. How long did it take to help?

    • Posted

About three to four weeks to help. Not gone away totally but much better. Yes still on mirtaz, like you some good days but more bad.  Do let me know if you get B12 or nutritionist help. Im open to anything that will make me feel able to try to get back to normal.
