Nearly there

Hi Everyone, I am nearing to my THR and I can say I am ready for it. I am hoping that there will not be as much pain, as what I experience at the moment. I have been sleeping on my back for at least 4 months as I couldn't lie on either side due to the pain. I have read some of the threads on here and people seem pretty positive. I have asked if I could have the sedation, and nerve block when I saw my anesthetist last week, he agreed, however, if they had a problem with the spinal I would need to have a general, so, Im fine with that, just looking forward to being out of this constant pain, have to say the nerves and butterflies are starting to kick in now for Tuesday. I just wanted to say this site has been a great help reading through other peoples posts, as we want as much information as we can get when faced with a major surgery. Thanks

Good luck Katleen, your hip pain will be gone. You will have pain from the incision site and where they have cut through the muscles etc. It should be controlled and don't be afraid to ask for different pain killers if what you are given does not work. We all react differently.  For me I woke up in recovery, surgeon came to see me told me it had gone well and I said thank God that bloody pain has gone.  I could immediately feel no pain in groin and thigh. When I moved though it hurt as above. I look back now 25 months on and think WoW was it worth it. I can dance, run around after my grandchildren, Although i have to stop at climbing on the play equipment.. My grandson whose 4 thinks Ii'm superwoman. After my op he used to say is your poorly leg better yet for me to sit on your lap!   Peopel who don't know me cannot believe I have had a hip replacement its that good xx

Thank you, Auntiebeanie, for your kind words. I have prayed in many ways for this pain to be gone. I sometimes get stuck trying to get back into the house if I have gone outside to the garden or put the rubbish out. My leg from the groin is so so painful, almost like it's broken, very intense pain that includes the back and hip itself. I am on a lot of pain meds and hopefully, I can start to wean off them.

Again, thank you for taking the time to tell not just me but many people who are in the same predicament.

      Very best

    Dear Katleen

You will be fine..just lie back and enjoy it! Think about the prospect of once your recovery is over you should be looking forward to a life without the pain you have had to cope with for so long.

    All the best, Richard

I had mine done about 2 1/2 years ago!

My after surgery pain wasn't as bad as I expected and I had the spinal w/ sedation. I said goodbye to my family, then, woke up 2 hours or so later and saw them again. I just slept through everything!

Just follow your doc's instructions to the tee!

I really didn't and now, after all this time, finally I can say that I'm not even aware that I had THR!

But I still have left side to do yet! LOL!

The best thing I did was learn everything I could about THR and I religiously followed this forum. Everybody was so helpful.

Did some of the info scare me?

Of course it did but afterwards I said it wasn't as bad as I had expected!

You'll do great and you'll never regret your decision!

Dear Miele55255ch, thank you so much for taking time to reply to me. I am slightly worried but welcoming the operation, anything to rid this constant pain. I did speak with an anaesthetist and he did say he couldnt see a problem with me havig the sedation, but if there is a problem with the spinal, then I would have to have the general. I am hoping it goes well and I can look forward to being out of pain over the laast few years, until the last 8 months its been bearable, now its severe and I shall be thankfull when its gone.

Don't be scared be positive. I had sedation and spinal and was fully awake and updating my Facebook status whilst being wheeled back to the ward. Just do everything you are told. The first 24 hours are a bit weird but you'll be up on your feet within a day or 2. Good luck

Thank you, Sacha, I am just at the point of wanting it done and over. It has been a long painful road and I am at the end of it now, nearly!

Very kind of you to take time and reply. I will be over the moon to be able to have spinal and sedation, I am so not a fan of general!

      Regards

      Katleen

    Hi Katleen,

?You will be pleasantly surprised at the difference in pain. Your old, constant grinding pain will be gone, and it will become a memory. Yes you will have new pain, but you will know it's different, and that it will subside. It's good that you have been pre - prepared in case the spinal is unsuccessful. My anaesthetist planned for a spinal, and 'light' general. He was unable to site the spinal, so changed to full general. Throughout the whole episode the team kept me calm and safe. When I woke up I didn't care anyway. You will be amazed at how much better you feel really quickly,. I  think a few nerves and butterflies are a good thing, it's exciting knowing your life will be changing and that you will be mobile and eventually pain free. confused

      Dear Jools2512

Thank you for your kind words. I am looking forward to it being over, its time for the pain to go, its been a long one, and now it's getting near I am so welcoming a change. I really don't like the feel of general anesthetics, but whatever it takes to rid of this pain I am ok with.

Thank you again for your time in answering me.

      Regards

I was counting down the days to the op, I don’t know what I would have done if it had been cancelled. I had a spinal with no sedation as I wanted to know what was going on. I did not seem to have any pain although They did give me morphine. I was dreading getting up, but had no problem. Then going home I was worried about getting into the car and then up the steps to my house, I thought I might be camping outside! I clambered up the steps using my crutches which I then abandoned as I was useless with them and my house is small and not crutch friendly. I was also worried about getting into bed but the hospital had given me a bit of material knotted in a loop which is probably the best gadget I had. I seem to have been very lucky and was able to walk normally about the house, furniture surfing to a certain extent when I could hardly move before the op. I had no problem showering. I don’t think I have had any pain, perhaps no sense no feeling! I had a lateral posterior with quite a long wound. I do not seem to have had any problems from a heavy leg or from cut muscles. In fact the new hip feels just like my old one and I cannot believe that I have an artificial one. I often forgot the ninety degree rule, but luckily did not cause any damage. I was very unfit before the op as I was in a really bad way and had to give up driving a couple of months before even.

I got to the point where I didn't care what they did. They could have chopped me in half and shoved me in a basket ! 😕 Hope all goes well. Lisa.
