Neck Lump - somebody please reply?!!

In June last year I suddenly came down with a pretty severe case of dizzyness/loss of equilibrium. At its woes it lasted about a month, I steadily improved over time but couldn't work for 9 months. I'm back to work but still don't feel 'right'

At the time I was diagnosed with labyrinthitus but when I saw the ENT specialist he was dubious as my symptoms were not A-typical. All my ear test checked out fine.

The whole time there have been two constant things. The fine is a faint red ring on my left cheek about an inch and a half in diameter which I only notice since I was poorly. Not sure if it's relevant.

The second is that I can feel a lump on the back of my neck just to the right of my spine beneath the hairline. It feels kinda squidgy and I can move it a little. If it tilt my head to the side there is an audiable crack from this/near location.

I have had MRI and ultrasound which apparently came back normal ?! The weird thing is when I stand under the shower and press firmly on the lump it creates an audiable crack/pop in my sternum/collarbone area - as if something is rubbing or realeasing. I've had people stand next to me when I do it and can hear it even with shower running. Surely this specific symptom can point to something? Can it be some kind of muscular knot and is there any way it can explain what happened to me last year.

Actuallly I've been feeling poorly for about 13 months! If you read about MRSA it can cause boils and rashes etc and a general feeling of being unwell - many people live with MRSA and don't even realise. It's only when it infect certain organs that it becomes life threatening.

Just to add I am not some sort of hyprcondriac and I am not stressed - I'm getting on with my life to the best of my ability - but there still feels to be something that has not been identified. I went to the doctors about 40 times in the last 12 months - in 15 adult years previous about half a dozen altogether!

Nt sure if there's. Blood test for MRSA?  Check that out and if there is ask your GP you'd,like, one done to rule things out. Did you also ask for a referral,to the 'lump' consultant. As i say when i first started seeing one, he comes under Plastic Surgery, seems strange, bit it's,not dermatology i guess as that is skin.

I'm having my follow up for the one I had done on neck tomorrow, so,will see if I can sneak in a question, saying a 'friend' has mentioned a,lump and the area etc. And see what he says?  Btw,what area  are you  in UK?

I think i will. Might not be MRSA but maybe a staph infection. With regards to the neck lump I can still feel a lump there but I've had another doctor look at it and she said it was muscle and that the ultrasound and MRI are normal. I can't understand this and I am totally fed up with it - I can feel I lump there!

      yes uk.

Hi, i saw my consultant today. Got the head guy, a,Professor.  I mentioned someone i knew and the lump and where it was.  his words were ," tell her,to,get it,checked'.,i asked if it could be a carcinoma in that location and he said they can be anywhere where the suns doesnt shine'!! His nurse, also, said to tell 'her',to get it,checked. His Name is Professor Powell at the Royal Surrey Hospital,in Surrey (Guildford) if you want to look, him up.

      Thanks Gillian,

Not sure what I'm supposed to do if I've had an MRI and ultrasound and they have said it's normal?!

MRI's ans ultrasound dont show up suspicious lumps. You need,to see a relevant consultant who,is experienced in spotting these things and poss doing a biopsy. I can only tell you what he said, eg advice to get it checked by someone like, him!

Finally got referral for skin troubles. Having another ultrasound on neck - latest doctor certain it the muscle running length of neck.

    Redoing blood tests re fatigue.

Which muscle is he referring to??  I doubt an ultrasound will, show up much. I,could be wrong but ultrasounds have never been given for lumps when I, and friends I know, have gone for this sort of,thing. A biopsy yes.

When you say 'skin problems' do you mean you're seeing a Dermatologist? If so they only, again as far as my experience goes, deal, with skin problems, not lumps underneath.

      Yes.

So the skin troubles he thinks is a fairly wodespread fungal infection for which he has referred me but also started me on some treatment at same time. He thinks the other doctors have been wrongly prescribing exema cream which will have basically just spread it around.

The lump is still just the same he was fairly certain it is a muscular issue but ordered another ultrasound I’m guessing just to be sure. At least they are doing something now rather than just dismissing it. It’s not obvious to the eye - you would not know I had a lump there if you looked only very subtle in certain positions but I can feel it under the surface.

The skin trouble is a separate problem, at least I think it is! So not expecting a dermatologist so diagnose the lump - unless they see something that links it all I suppose.

Oh sorry was unaware you had a separate issue.  Yes a fungal skin infection deffo, won’t be helped by exema  cream!  Fungal can easily be cleared up,with anti fungal meds and or cream.

yes aS you say at least they’re trying more now. Most lumps, under skin aren't,obvious to naked eye I know. Let's,see what comes of their investigation. At least the fungal, one can be sorted before Xmas eh?

Update - been for the ultrasound today..

Apparently I have a BENIGN cyst in my neck , was told nothing to worry about.

Can this somehow explain what happened to me??!! And should I be worried???!

no, you shouldn’t be worried at all. If it's benign. But it should be removed. Did they indicate that will happen?

i've had two benign growths removed from under my skin. Not sure how an ultra sound can  be diagnosed as benign though as they'd needmto take a biopsy. My growths were diagnosed as non carcinogenic, but they still said it’s best to remove.

No not at the time. Hopefully when the doctor get the results he will be able to tell.

All I know is that from looking on the screen it was fluid filled.

In July 2016 after a camping trip I started being dizzy/disorientated like I had constantly had half a dozen pints.

I was diagnosed with labyrinthitus but after I saw an ENT consultant he was sceptical of that diagnosis.

I had 7/8 months off work lost two stone in weight but slowly returned to mostly normal and regained the weight.

Over all that time several things have remained constant as follows -

I have had some cracking/snapping/popping in my neck when moving in certain positions in the exact area where I now know there is a cyst. The rubbing of the same area in the shower creates a ‘pop’ in my sternum.

I am working full time but suffering with bad fatigue.

I have had skin rashes in legs and arms which could be co-incidental but started roughly same time. There is also a faint ring on my left cheek which definitely appeared when I started being poorly.

Also the week I first fell ill I had a terrible pain/headache in the back of my neck (same region) for about a week but continued to work. Secondly in the first week I was poorly the area where the cyst is swelled at one point what felt really big but was probably about a marble size - I wondered what the hell it was but by the following morning had returned to the size it is now and remained like that.

I’ve also had a few other symptoms over the last 18 months but none of which are ongoing.

Pain/weakness in left arm behind elbow. Burning pain in lower back just to left of spine burn which radiates around that area (comes and goes grinch time to time)

Until I go and see the doctor about the ultrasound results I’m finding it hard not to speculate on what the problem could be.

I’m not worried per say but it’s more of a desire to finally have an explanation to what happened to me. Is there something that would connect all the dots all thing considered.

      What about Lyme?
