neck pressure and thyroid symptoms but labs normal

I visited the doctors 4 weeks ago with neck pressure, at the time only left sided. It feels like someone is pushing on the side of my neck. This is now happening to both sides of my neck. If i press on the area of discomfortt it makes the pressure worse. My GP ordered bloods for thyroid function which all came back normal. He also requested a scan which I am still awaiting an appointment for.

I have also had an almost constant headache in my forehead for nearly 5 weeks that is controllable with painkillers.

Over the last 2 or 3 years I have visited my GP surgery for:

palpitations - bloods, ecg, echo all came back normal

nail ridges - tested for anameia, normal but odd results, one at top range, other bottom, GP requested more tests, all came back normal

Stomach bloating and weight gain - all tests normal

The weight gain could be that I quit smoking (<5 a day) 4 years ago. the bloating i put down to ibs in the end. the nail ridges still there. both my big toe nails actually broke in half last year. only things i could think to blame were my vegetarian diet and nail dryness.

all the above, i read, fits with hypothyroidism. feeling frustrated that all my results always come back normal and feel like i'm constantly wasting both mine and the nhs's time.

has anyone else experienced this, or does anyone else have any idea of other causes?

my gp has said if the neck pressure continues (this comes and goes btw) to go back in a week or 2 and he will refer me to a specialist but i can't help but think that again everything will be normal and i may as well just accept that i'm 40 in a couple of weeks and perhaps this is just how it feels to be middle aged. neutral a="" day)="" 4="" years="" ago.="" the="" bloating="" i="" put="" down="" to="" ibs="" in="" the="" end.="" the="" nail="" ridges="" still="" there.="" both="" my="" big="" toe="" nails="" actually="" broke="" in="" half="" last="" year.="" only="" things="" i="" could="" think="" to="" blame="" were="" my="" vegetarian="" diet="" and="" nail="" dryness.="" all="" the="" above,="" i="" read,="" fits="" with="" hypothyroidism.="" feeling="" frustrated="" that="" all="" my="" results="" always="" come="" back="" normal="" and="" feel="" like="" i'm="" constantly="" wasting="" both="" mine="" and="" the="" nhs's="" time.="" has="" anyone="" else="" experienced="" this,="" or="" does="" anyone="" else="" have="" any="" idea="" of="" other="" causes? ="" my="" gp="" has="" said="" if="" the="" neck="" pressure="" continues="" (this="" comes="" and="" goes="" btw)="" to="" go="" back="" in="" a="" week="" or="" 2="" and="" he="" will="" refer="" me="" to="" a="" specialist="" but="" i="" can't="" help="" but="" think="" that="" again="" everything="" will="" be="" normal="" and="" i="" may="" as="" well="" just="" accept="" that="" i'm="" 40="" in="" a="" couple="" of="" weeks="" and="" perhaps="" this="" is="" just="" how="" it="" feels="" to="" be="" middle="">

I have all of the same symptoms with thyroid tests coming back normal. I was diagnosed with a pituitary tumor in December and that can lead to thyroid cusses. I have IBS and have had an elevated platelet count for a while. My oncologist had some special blood work done CALR to check for mutations and that came back normal as well. No I have not been diagnosed with cancer but all signs lead to that or something with my thyroid but all tests come back normal. The next step for me is a bone marrow test but I also want to check out thyroid specialists who look beyond the normal results as I hear they are often wrong and the standard numbers nay not be normal for all which I think is the case for you and I. I want to suggest an MRI of your head as well. Pituitary tumors are somewhat common and can be the start of some of these symptoms. I googled the strangled feeling because it is really bothering me right now and i came upon your post. Let me know if you gotten any confirmations on causes of these issues. JD

    Hi sezzp,

I have been having all of your symptoms for yrs now. I am 50 but at least 10 yrs or more same symptoms even nails. I had my doctor run reverse t3 and antibodies of thyroid tests alsoTSH, -T3, -T4 for thyroid. My reverse T3 was high and antibodies was high but the others were normal. So if only test your Dr is running is TSH, -T3, -T4 then yours maybe doing the same. Meaning your body is not converting the T3. Ask Dr to run these five test for throid. Lot of Drs don't believe it. So if it doesn't listen then go to another Dr. God bless. Hope this helps.

Do you experience difficulty swallowing? i have left neck pressure that began 3 days ago and it worsens slightly when i swallow. I also have heart palpitations, brittle nails and hair, soft stool for 12 weeks, and suffer from migraines. My urinalysis, 2 blood tests, physical exam, and 2 stool cultures are all normal.

    I'll add to MarieC.

Yes, do read the many thyroid posts. AND MarieC is right on that tests don't always show abnormalities even with the presence of thyroid disease.

Honestly, thyroid disease is extremely difficult to treat, so many patients look at everything else as they try to troubleshoot thyroid issues.

But since you mention neck tension, is it possible you're dealing with a neck injury or stress induced neck pain? Neck problems can cause severe fatigue. There is some research that indicates whiplash and other neck injuries contribute to thyroid disease. It might be worthwhile to see a good chiropractor. It could relieve the pressure in the neck area and help your overall health.

My experience has led me to believe that good neck health is on of many factors that contribute to good thyroid health.

Responding to the more recent replies....

No, I never did get answers and more recently my right side swells too. If I rub the swellings I will often belch. I still think that diet is a big player here. Over the years I've had 2 scans and 2 lots of bloods. They always come back as normal.

Gluten is a massive issue for me. It causes all kinds of issues. Dizziness included. So I now follow gluten free diet. It takes 3 months for this to really make a difference though. So if you plan to try it, then do persevere. If I eat it by mistake then the swelling will be worse. I'm unsure yet what other foods aggravate it, but as I say diet, in my case, was definitely the issue.

Good luck all. Hope you find your own answers soon!

I was misdiagnosed for 12 years they said my thyroid was fine then I kept having test done on my thyroid hormone cause I was having swelling in the throat pressure in the throat come to find out my thyroid hormone was fluctuating making it difficult for doctors to diagnose it exactly but finally it got low enough that it was found low again I have to say I felt like I was half dead by time they found my low thyroid hormone..I was treated for everything but the right thing it nearly destroyed my health ..

Hi Vickie, you may have dodged a bullet. Realize that a diagnosis is based on the treatment parameters. Get it? No treatment, no diagnosis. The thyroid medication only works with a very narrow portion of thyroid disease, as the meds cause horrible side effects, including severe bone loss, heart problems, and worsened thyroid disease- thyroxin is extremely difficult to dose because it suppresses the body's ability to produce thyroxin.

I'm on the other end of the thyroid medication. It worsened my disease and I've had numerous broken bones- fingers and toes- caused by the thyroxin. Diagnosis and treatment are a sham.

If I had it to to over again, I'd never take synthetic thyroxin. I'd reconsider taking even the natural thyroxin. None of it deals with the cause, which is chemical and radiation exposure, resulting in immune system dysfunction.
