A while ago I was told I have osteoporosis after an x ray but my gp told me I couldn't possibly have it I'm too young at 42,despite having a spinal injury years ago.Anyway I had an awful experience Saturday which resulted in me getting an emergency MRI which again shown I have degenerative bones in my spine.I work 12 hour shifts at a desk...I went to work today but after three hours was in agony...do I need to admit defeat and look for another job??? I have been told to get benefits but I don't want to do that...do other sufferers claim benefits or work with osteoporosis??? I feel so confused :-(

It is my sacroiliac that makes me unable to sit on chairs or stand or walk much.

Hi Julia, not so good news then, try not to worry, worrying can never change anything, all you can do is adapt your life to what your able to do, I live in cornwall and can't remember the last time I was able to walk on one of the beaches or just go out with mates and family, but something that has to be accepted now, if something is going to cause pain I try not to do it.

I'm not ready yet to give in and race up and down the streets on a mobility scooter

All I can say is, the folks around here who use scooters are a menace, careening along the sidewalk or even down the middle of the street as if they haven't a care in the world.  Crazy birds!  cheesygrin

I'm a bloody good driver and very considerate so think I'd be ok but id hate it if I had to use a scooter . .I've already got people saying I could do with the help.of a wheelchair when I'm really in pain......which I totally disagree with

My mom had the same problem it helped some when we got her a foam donut pillow to sit on.  I hope that this could help you.

Although pain is a disability don't think some of us want to see our self's as disabled and don't want to use a wheelchair even though we know it would help, there will be alot of pavement rage when I do get one

I have a v shaped pillow ..I lie on my side holding one end while having the other end in between my legs...I have a very expensive memory foam mattress which I find very comfortable but over the past year I've been very restless on it....

I really really really won't do well in a wheelchair....I'd be devestated and I'd feel very sorry for myself ....

Me too.  Although maybe, when I'm really old if it's the only way I can get around I might have to accept it.  Not now though!

As well as being osteopoenic, I have mild scoliosis and compressed discs in my back.  Having Vertigo, which isn't mild, doesn't help.  My most recent stroke made it worse because it affected my left eye and it's tracking.  So needless to say I went to rehab and came home with a wheel chair.  Well, I hated it.  I had to depend on someone else way to much which definitely not to my liking.  I felt like I was in bondage.  So I got a scooter which was a great help to my extremely independent nature.  Life gave me a big fat lemon, and it took a while to make the lemonade.  I was walking in fear more than anything.

You won't get hate mail from me.  You do make a good point though.  I get accused quite a bit about being too slow in my car.  Where I live it is so congested on the road so I am more careful.  And my sons yell at me to hurry.

So sorry Pam. I had vertigo for eight months last year so can relate to that. I also have issues with discs and mild scoliosis as well. I have heard that half the people have the scoliosis though.

The strokes you have had far outweighs the other things so I feel for you with that to deal with on top of the vertigo.

      All the best.

Thanks Pam. It seems to be the angle of the chair as well it needs to be soft underneath and then lower back support.

Hi Pay, I'm the opposite I have to tell my mum to slow down. I also have scoliosis but now with multiple fractured vertebrae, I'd like to ask everyone what pain killers they take

I don't take prescription medications; just arthritis strength acetaminophen or an anti inflammatory depending upon the pain.
