New diagnosis

Hey guys,

I'm currently under investigation for svt. I've been addmitted with symptoms related to it. During these admissions I've had medication to lower my heart rate. In some occasions I've had electrical shocks too. Im increasingly become stressed and annoyed over this matter. My consultant hasn't contacted me in 3months and it's becoming frustrating without any answers. I was later told that he had discharged me. I went to my gp and they said that there is something wrong with my heart rythem and that my consultant has to refer me immedietley.

I really don't know what to do me and my family are getting sick and tired of waiting for answers.

I just wanted to know how many times a month would you have? Do you blackout with this issue? Do you become sweaty and lethargic after? What's the highest heart rate it could go to (mine was 210)? What are all the symptoms you get?

Thank you in advance

You are obviously really frustrated and worried about this. My first reaction was that you might feel better if you went to a different consultant? stick with it though, and persist until you get answers.....good luck with it all...

Thank you for replying. I've already tried other consultant. I've been referred to so many consultant but noting had been said. I went to my gp and they said all they can do is keep referring me.

Thank you again I appreciate it

I Don't really understand..  Wouldn't they know if you had svt or not?  You went in and they gave you an Ekg no?  If they didn't catch it on an ecg..  Why wouldn't they just give you a monitor to wear or something?
    • Posted

They couldn't catch it properly either because the machine wasn't working properly or the wires weren't stuck to me etc. however they did catch it once the recent one. But the consultant wanted a second opinion before any interventions are taken place. I was given a 24hour tape but that didn't catch anything just tachycardia. But now I haven't heard from him and he's discharged me.

Well, it's tough when we anxious about something like this. But then, I have to wonder if the consultants attitude is because he knows you are not in any danger of heart disease? it's frustrating that he dosen't sit you down and explain why he's not worried about you if that is the case. I've googled SVT and I guess most of you have done that. It's hard to believe but I've read that 45 to 70% of people with normal healthy hearts have SVT at different times of their lives. Same with ectopics, but not everyone feels them. Those of us who do are made anxious and miserable by them. And I don't know that doctors and consultants realise just how miserable we are with these darn episodes. How many posts on these sites have you all read where sadly, some quite young people experience these and become so frightened, they change their whole lifestyle, sometimes not wanting to leave the house in case they have an episode. Knowing we are not alone does make a difference, and when we have got all the medical advice, tests etc, and our specialists don't seem worried and send us home, then perhaps it's because we can also relax about them. Some type of counselling by a medical person perhaps, to help us accept that we are actually okay, now maybe that's the way to go. Good luck everyone, Lizzie

      Hey Lizzie,

Thank you for your reply I appreciate it greatly. I think your correct about it not being life threatening so my doctor isn't in much of a hurry. However I shouldn't be kept waiting for so long without any information.

I later looked up my consultant and found out he had been taken to court for medical misconduction. It costed a child's life. This makes me worried wondering whether he's a good doctor or not. I've been refered to many other doctors recently but have not heard ever since.

Thank you again for the information and also for replying.

I can totally sympathise with you, the consultants never seem to rush anything! I take that as a sign they are not worried though but keep chasing it up.  Its easy to say try not to worry but I find if I get stressed it triggers an SVT. I had a monitor fitted for a week just to see how frequent mine were as I was diagnosed in A&E after an episode of 250 bpm for about 2 hours and treated with adenosine, (previously I was told it was a panic attack)! I was sweating, dizzy, sick and exhausted for at least a week after this episode. It had started whilst in a meeting at work.   I got a strange sensation sweep across my body, went hot and bingo heart went like the clappers. I get them now and again but try all the suggested strategies to stop it. I hope you get sorted soon so good luck.

      Hey Maria,

Thank you for the reply I appreciate it very much.

Yeah I don't really realise that stress triggers it but my friends and family do, they always say that when I'm stressed out I have these attacks mostly.

I have the exact same symptoms as you. I literally couldn't move for a week. I just thought it was the medication. But then recently I had an sever attack but I didn't go hospital and I didn't have the medication. I still seemed very tired afterwards. I couldn't get out of bed for a week. So at least now I'm more assured by my symptoms.

I've also been given methods to hold my breath and blow as hard as possible, blow into a syringe, or rub my neck.

Thank you again for your explanation of your experience. I appreciate it.

May I ask you a question.  When you had these attacks and were told it was anxiety, were they caught on an ecg or heart monitor?  I too get a weird feeling and than I start getting hot, and my heart than starts beating faster, and than i get even hotter and my heart starts taking off.. It happens to me most of the times now at night as im trying to doze off to sleep..  I do suffer from panic and anxiety.. but I never knew if this was anxiety or panic attacks..  When your SVT stops does it just stop like a light switch or do you feel a sense of calm first and than the heart rate comes down...  I wore a holter monitor and had an episode and the cardiologist said it was sinus tachy.. Not svt that I probably had an anxiety attack.. I called up again and asked him in case the monitor was put on me wrong or something, and he said the monitor got a good reading.

      Hey,

Yeah it was caught on a ECG but when I wore the 24hour tape nothing was caught but I did have tachycardia. I have the same feeling when I go to sleep too. I think that the sleep thing might be related to anxiety and stress however the svt attacks are really bad. I don't even panic it's just the feeling. Even doctors and consultants said that this can't be anxiety cause of the tachycardia and also my symptoms.

yeah these things are hell whatever they are.. If I am just suffering from anxiety attacks, than i can't imagine how bad the real thing must be..  I never do any maneuvers to stop mine. I have had these attacks for many years since I started getting anxiety disorder..  They usually last a minute or two and than my heart calms down on its own.. 98 percent of the time it happens soon as im dozing off to sleep or in that state.. its weird and scary..  I went to a cardiologist got my heart tested got a monitor and got it caught on the monitor.. it caught my heart rate going up to 160.. He told me my heart is strong and fine, and my rythm was normal sinus.. If that is true... than Im just here to tell people that these anxiety attacks can really really really mimic a heart problem.. You don't even have to be nervous or freaked out,, but with me.. if this is anxiety.. My body shoots a shot of adrenaline into my system.. I am scared to keep doubting the doctors and tests because a lot of anxiety people end up getting tested and tested non stop till someone misdiagnoses them with something

Yeah your totally right. It does mimic anxiety. When I was 4years old I had this same issue but I was told I had anxiety. It kinda passed on but the last 5 years have been terrible. It's come back with a bang. I don't think all of my attacks are related to anxiety however I do still think some are related to svt. But who knows is all I can say. I'm just going to have to wait till I get a reply from my consultant if not il probably just have to go abroad and get it sorted out by a consultant some where else.

But thanks anyway. Your totally correct about it possibly being anxiety.

That's terrible they can't give you a definite diagnosis.  That must be very frustrating and I'm sure it causes anxiety.  Speaking of anxiety, I'm 53 years old and I've always been a bit anxious but I have been very active the last several years.  Gone to exercise classes four of five times a week.  Go shopping, etc. with no problem.  Well that all changed when I developed SVT.  I had my first episode about five months ago.  I started feeling faint and really strange.  DIdn't even realize my heart was pounding.  I brushed it off as a panic attack of something like that.  A week and a half later I felt the same way.  Like I was about to pass out or something.  I then took my blood pressure at home and saw my heart rate was 155.  I know that freaked me out and probably thru me into a panic.  I then thought I was going to die, literally.    I mean I literally did.  I had an ambulance come and take me to the hospital. When they arrived I was lying face down on the bed and I could feel this strong pulsing feeling in my head.  I felt like I was "fading out" or something.  I was shaking and couldn't stop.  I kept saying over and over, I am going to die, I know I am going to die.  It was the worse experience of my life!  So scary!!  By the time I was put in the ambulance my heart rate was going down and I was starting to feel normal again.  I was throwing pvc's every 20 seconds or so but I've had those for years and am used to them.  Anyway, I saw a cardiologist and had a 30 day event monitor put on.  I was having two or three SVT's per day while wearing that thing. I was a NERVOUS WRECK!  I practically stayed in bed for two weeks and barely got up and moved around because I was so afraid of these things.  I even called ambulance one other time.  I don't think I was having an SVT, I think it was just a major panic attack at least that's what they told me at the hospital.  I was put on a low dose beta blocker and I don't have them very often now.  Every now and then but I'm not as afraid as I used to be.  I can do a vagal maneuver that always brings them down.  I do however still have a lot of anxiety about going out.  I rarely go to my exercise classes anymore.  If I do, I'm usually a nervous wreck.  Here's a funny story.  I bought a sports watch to wear when I go to my exercise classes so I can keep an eye on my heart rate.  I'm so scared that I will have one during the class and start to feel faint.  I went to my kickbox  class the other day that I used to LOVE.  I was trying to relax and enjoy the class but it was so hard.  I was 15 minutes or so into class and I glanced at my watch.  It showed 170.  I thought, that's strange it shouldn't be that high.  I tried to ignore it thinking it would come down.  I glanced at it again and it was 180!  I couldn't understand why I ddn't feel faint.  I decided to leave class and I went to the locker room to sit down.  I did my vagal maneuver but it stayed at 180.  Then I laid down on the couch and it wouldn't go down.  Then I realized that it wasn't showing my heart rate after all it was showing how many calories I had burned.   LOL  I then pushed another button on watch and it showed 115.  I was relieved and went back to class.  Anyway, I feel my life has changed as far as the anxiety.  I just feel uptight going to my classes anymore.  I can exercise at home and not even wear the watch or worry and I haven't had an episode yet while exercising.  I am however anxious now when I go to drive my car.  Always afraid I may have one when driving.  I'm also avoiding going into stores.  I send my husband.  I hate going.  I fear that I will have a SVT while I'm there.  I force myself to go at times but feel so anxious, almost panicky.  Anyone else feel this way?  My electrophysiologist told me that I won't die from these but I just have so much fear.  Not so much from feeling the pounding but the worst part for me is when I feel that I may faint.

      Hey rochelle,

Thank you for your amazing reply. I appreciate it very much.

Haha your funny story was truely funny. I got scared and then you said it was the calorie count thing, I just couldn't stop laughing.

I have the same symptoms as you. I'm guessing that it is svt. I have mine upto 3-4 times a week. But some of them last like 8mins but others last around an hour. I black out quite often too though.

It's funny because my first episode was at the gym. The paramedics got scared cause I went blue and I wasn't responding. My heart rate was over the top.

Your right about anxiety issue. I've been told that I have a bit of anxiety and I'm quite stressed out. I have many other medical issues that could probably be the cause of the stress.

But thank you again for your story. It's given me a lot of information listening to your experience.

    Hi Micky

I'm also under investigation for svt, I had a bad attack yesterday and feel really lethargic, headaches and tired today.

It is so frustrating and I find it really scary, it came on at the train station just stood waiting on my own, I tend to leave it a while holding my breath but I was getting bad pains for the first time, I was only round the corner from the hospital so I got a taxi, by the time I got there it was 203 (it has gone up to 230) and it was getting difficult to breath.

My oxygen levels were low so they were about to give me the drug to stop it which I've had a few times when's gone on for a long time, suddenly it just went to 100 and I felt normal again.

I've been really lucky with consultant and a&e staff they really reassure me that it's safe and i'll be ok, I'm waiting to see an electrical specialist and discussed with my last consultant about having ablation. I'm a bit scared of that but if it means it can end having any more palps I'll have it.

I have a plan of action for what I'll do if it starts which helps, I have a palp checker app on my phone so I monitor it, I sort childcare if need be aka ring a mate, I hold my breath and stay calm, still palping after 20mins I ring a taxi and go get it stopped. My consultant recommended I get it stopped after 20mins.

I really hope you can get sorted it's scary and you need to speak to a consultant that will answer you questions and put you at ease.

      Hey Louise,

      Thank you for your reply.

Wow I hope the ablation goes well. Yeah it's good that you have everything planned out. I'm just not sure what it is. If I get a proper diagnosis from a consultant I will have more relief and il be more prepared and reassured.

But thank you again I appreciate your reply. I hope everything goes well for you. Good luck

Micky.. Do you get a feeling or flutter like skipped heart beats right before your heart rate takes off?  and when it stops do you also feel your heart skip beats or do something weird right before it stops on a dime?  A lot of people who have SVT say that is what happens to them.. their SVT usually starts up with some kind of PAC/PVC

Yeah I have heart flutters but then it's like my heart is falling(wired I know, I don't know how to describe it). And then I just become sweaty and everything blacks out. I have sever palpitations where I can feel my heart thumping really fast all over my body. I then go into a faint. I'm not exactly sure how it ends I think I feel my heart drop again but I'm not entirely sure as I am concentrating on my breathing and trying to get out of the faint. I only know when it's over, when my symptoms start to subside and I don't feel the heavey palpitations

Its interesting you say "falling"..  I used to a falling feeling in the past but my heart didn't race from it.. it just felt like a weird electric shock kind of thing and almost the feeling you get when you go over a hil.. like a buttery fly in your chest feeling..  I also get very hot and start sweating and feel my heart pounding extremely fast.. so fast that I am absolutely convinced something is wrong.  Most people will tell you that you need to get it on the monitor..that is what everyone told me.. I wrote on these forums so much for so long trying to explain every one of my symptoms.. The answer i got over 1000000 times.. is.. get it recorded that is the golden test to knowing conclusively.. After so long I FINALLY wore a monitor and had the attack... And look.. I am still here... still asking questions.. still in doubt..  If your problem is anxiety.. and not svt.. the battle isn't over so easily.. They say trust your instincts and body..but i couldn't cause i never knew for sure either way..  There was another guy on the forum who said his heart rate went up to 180 and he also was diagnosed with anxiety attacks and was in shock.. they gave him therapy for it and his attacks went away..  So it is possible.. maybe its not, but just have to keep that possibility open.

Yeah thanks il keep that in mind. I have been told in many occasions that it could be anxiety. Which I think could be a possibility. However they did catch an attack and there was something wrong with my electrical impulses. They never said exactly if it was svt but it was also a possibility. I was told it's not life threatening but can be managed with medication or procedure.

I never heard back after that

      But yeah thanks anyway

instead of going crazy over their diagnosis why don't you go to a cardiologist and have them give you a longer term monitor so you can catch it again.. and see what they say it is.  I guess like you said if it was something to worry about they wouldn't be going about it like this.
