    Hi Ann

I am having double hip replacement on 16th Aug. And am also concerned about how I will get those stockings on as I live alone. I may get some help from family. Tesco sell a gadget to help getting stockings on along with a long shoe horn. I bought the set so hopefully that will help. As regards seating in my lounge I have a very low sofa which is no good. My physio suggested ringing the Red Cross who may be able to help ....I did so and was told to call back about 10 to 7 days before the op as they do sometimes have chairs that would be suitable. They need to be high backed with arms. I hope your operation and recovery go well. x

Hi Deeanne. I have been to furniture shop today and got a high chair with arms in their sale, I will use it for the six to eight weeks then it will act as spare chair for visitors.  Red Cross don't offer furniture in my area, got an extra cushion as well.  Good luck with having double hip op .  Friends now say they will help out with removing socks, but I intend to get a dressing stick at the weekend it has hooks on both ends and may well enable me to be independent, vet hey only cost £8. So not a big expense.

Are the hospital sending you straight home after the op or will you go to a rehab ward for a week or so. Also where are you located?

Hi Veronica, the hospital are sending me straight home, and I live in North Yorkshire.so will have to manage getting friends to come round as necessary.

Hi Ann, I can't help with the stockings I'm afraid as I had help.

You will find lots of conflicting info on this forum about recliner chairs. I personally bought one especially for post-op use, it proved to be invaluable & was approved by my surgeon & Physio. Mine was a dual motor riser/recliner & I think the problem arises when you only have a manual chair. You gave to use your legs to operate the up/down leg part. If yours is manual just be careful but there are lots of members on here who have gotten great use from their recliner. Good luck x

I'm with fern lady on this. I bought an electric recliner (back and feet, not the kind that stands you upright). I akready had a manual recliner that I knew I couldn't push down with my operated hip.

you will not be able to put the Ted socks on yourself. They are tight and you will not be able to bend down that far for at least 2 weeks. Even the sock  tool wont work. You have to have help or not wear them as they have to come off at night ( my doc orders) or shower.

My dr says I have to wear these 24/7 only take off when I wash them and having them on overnight was a must. His instructions was to wear for 28 days! And those darn gadgets to help put on sox was/is no help! 😩

I had mine done 9 days ago and I couldn't get through the day without my recliner? You sit where it is easy to elevate your leg. Good luck!

I thought a chair was going to be good but I wound up using my husband's recliner! I hardly ever sat in it before my op now that's my go to chair! I had to have leg completely elevated in beginning now I can sit with it slightly elevated. Good luck!

Morning Ann -- I didn't have to wear those pressure socks but a friend of mine did.  She also lives alone and found it a hassle.  She had two pairs and would wear one pair for 3 days.  Then she had to have a friend come over (would usually coordinate this with a planned visit anyway) and take those socks off and put a new pair on.  Then she would wash the old pair and get them ready for 3 days hence.  She hated them too.

I sat in a recliner the whole time.  It is a bit different than some....smaller and not one of those deep cushy recliners.  I use my 4"cushion in it.  I do have to push the foot rest down but I was always able to use my good leg to do that.  It has worked great for me.......I don't know if there are things like the cushion you can do to make it work?

Good luck with your new hip in two weeks.  Best thing ever!!!!!

    Hi Ann,

you shouldn't have to pay for any chair or equipment to help you at home after your op. The occupational therapists should be able to sort it all out for you before you even have your op.i would contact the hospital where you are having it done and ask to speak to the occupational therapists. Hope you can get it sorted. Look after yourself.

Elaine you are lucky, in my area there is now no help, a sheet of paper telling you height of chairs, beds etc. and several shops that are now selling raised loo seats, chairs and whatever.

I am so sorry to hear there is no help for you in your area. The only thing I had to buy myself was a grabber which I had to take into hospital with me.I didn't need a raised toilet seat as toilet ok at home but they provided a chair on loan.Hope it all goes well for you which I am sure it will.take care

Hi Anna! My GF had to take injections too. I'm on 2 baby aspirin daily. That's it and no stockings either? 7 days post op and swelling is 90% gone. I'm feeling human again ??. I keep having to remind myself to slow down and rest.
