New member advise needed.

I have been under Mr Ali at Rotherham General hospital for 2 and 1/2 years and been refused an operation 5 times on the grounds of being too fat. My left hip is bone on bone and my right needs total reconstruction as its all crummbled away.

Yesterday i was told that they will not help me and actually discharged me. My bmi is 46, both knees are also bone on bone, im housebound and trying to cope with a terminally ill husband. Losing weight is proving so difficult, ive lost 4 stone but no more for the past 12 months.

Im at my wits end, cant stop crying and have contemplated suicide to put me out of my misery but my husband needs me.

Any suggestions as to where i go from here.

    Hi Sharon a

Sounds like your really struggling on all fronts. I have a weight problem so understand how hard it is to lose weight. But you have lost 4 stones well done.

Don't struggle on your own. Go to your GP they can sometimes help with a NHS Slimming Club.

I am losing weight myself as I know it's not helping my joints.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Thankyou all so very much for the sympathy, advise and encouraging words.

I will tell you a little more about my story.

I'm 58 and was diagnosed at 31, my pain has been chronic for 11 years and unbearable for 3. My weight gain is a result of the arthritis and as i said before i managed to lose 4 stone and was doing great at slimming world. On my first consultation he told me to go home and lose 6 stone in 4 months and me not coping very well with pressure just went into melt down and started comfort eating. Everytime my husband comes close to death i freak out and its always food i turn to.

Anyway after getting over the shock of finding out my hip is a zillion times worse than i thought it was and then being unceremoniously discharged, i have dried my tears, put my big girl pants on and got back on my diet. Im going to even try hypnotherapy gastric band soon and my family are going to raise holy hell if i dont stay on track. I will now wait until my bmi is at an acceptable level but also email other surgeons in different areas to ask what their criteria is to get my surgery.

Thanks again for this wonderful support you have really helped me get things in to perspective and in a frame of mind to do what needs to be done and that is to diet and also enjoy the time i have with my Husband instead of being parralised with fear at the thought of losing him.

    Cheers xxxxx

Come back anytime - you don't need an excuse to post. There's always someone around biggrin

You are absolutely right, and losing weight is critical. But do try elsewhere too, and if you can try the place I mentioned. If you can get your mobility back, then losing weight is so much easier.

?Good luck. And enjoy the time that you have left with your husband. I'm sure he wants to enjoy his time with you just as much.

    Hi Sharon

Its over 12 months since I had my hip replacement with mr Ali at Rotherham Hospital. I'm walking but with a lot of discomfort. I have damaged nerves in my foot. If i was you I would seek a 2nd opinion.

    Wishing you luck Brenda C
