New symptoms

Hi, today at work I experienced a new kind of attack I believe and I was wondering if anyone else has and can alleviate some of my anxieties surrounding it.

So I had just given meds to a patient walked away and suddenly I felt a massive pressure in my left ear and when I walked it felt like I was going off to the left side, like I was tilted.

I had to remain at work for a couple of hours while waiting for a replacement nurse. During this time I had some pins and needles in the left side of my face, rolling nausea, head spinning, no nystagmus but occasional spin when looking from one place to another and extreme hot flushes. I’m still experiencing the fluctuating nausea and head spins and almost like my eyes are detached from my brain.

I’ve not had this before and it’s worrying me.

So please if you’ve experienced similar please let me know so I can relax a little.

Thank you in advance

Gosh this does sound scary. I have had the vertigo very bad, but not the pins and needles, all of the other sound like anxiety attack? Along with the stupid menieres..

      Thanks for response.

It wouldn’t surprise me if it was anxiety related. I had an anxiety before this all started and in the really bad times I was convinced I was having a stroke because of the symptoms.

I felt relatively calm some of the time when some of symptoms ebbed slightly but you never know with this thing!

      Thank you for responding

Any visual disturbance? Headache or facial pain? Kinda sounds like a migraine variant. I get all kinds of weird migraine attacks.. Some mimic stroke. I've had the sudden sucking in pressure feeling in bad ear/temple and pins/needles. I was thought to have possible menieres (from other symptoms) but VNG tests over last 3 yrs remain normal. So they've diagnosed me with vestibular or basilar migraine. But I've also read that menieres patients have a very high incidence of migraine as well...

I did have some pain, not all the time.

I’ve had a history of migraines and atypical migraines.

The pressure in my ear was unreal, like nothing I’ve had before.

Thank you for replying, it helps to hear other people’s experiences.

Are you on preventative medications now?

Yes. I take propranolol but they wanted me on verapamil for the atypical migraine. But it gave me daily, different headaches so I couldn't take it. I also avoid a lot of the migraine trigger foods. I just started having the upper cervical chiro adjustments, and they've helped quite a bit. But they don't hold for more than a few weeks, and then I am readjusted.

See I take propranolol daily already for my anxiety disorder.

I had my first cervical realignment Friday and subsequently I’ve had this attack. So not sure I even want to go back when I got relief for about 3 hours and then it just got progressively worse until that mammoth attack yesterday.

I’m still not right this morning even though I feel slightly better, I’m trying to curb the anxiety the best I can.

What exactly is cervical realignment?I have recently seen a chiropractor and had neck massage and acupuncture but am no better.

It’s when a chiropractor realigns the vertebrae in your neck by manipulation and fast movements. Mine cracked no end!

As I say it could have been coincidence but I’m not risking visiting again no matter how good it felt at the time!

Sarah, wow I did not realize you had just had a cervical adjustment. I avoided chiropractic on my neck for my entire life, as my Neuro always told me to. But my neck has been a mess lately, and seems somehow related to my symptoms. My phys therapist actually referred me to a Blair chiropractic Dr. The neck adjustments are different than traditional chiropractic- there is NO twisting of the neck. They only work on the uppermost vertebra. Im not sure if you had this type? That said, I did have one adjustment that made me worse, but the effect was immediate, and he fixed it for me. The only drawback that I'm having with the treatment is that I feel great for a week or two, and then the neck issues start creeping back...

Sarah, I made another comment about chiropractic, but for some reason it is waiting to be moderated.

Regarding propranolol, usually the dose for migraine prevention is higher than the dose for anxiety. My Neuro insists that 80mg extended release is the lowest dose that will control migraine.

Also, I've not heard of facial numbness being brought on by menieres. Is it true numbness or just tingling? The chiro adjustment may have irritated the trigeminal nerve. Are you having neck pain on that same side as the facial numbness? Was the adjustment the traditional twisting type or the more specialized upper cervical adjustment that involves no twisting of the neck?

      How strange!

Yeah I’m on 80mg MR daily. As my anxiety attacks lead to me having a heart rate of over 200 at one stage when I was hospitalised.

Erm it comes and goes, it’s more like after having seen the dentist is the best way I can describe it. Sometimes it feels as though it extends down my neck and then goes. Facially it is the area directly connected to my ear to that corner of my mouth.

Was the twisting type. I have been using the ice pack as directed by my Chiro. I’m just confused as to what is happening.

Sarah, I see that you are seeing a Dr tomorrow. Please mention that you had the twisting type of chiro adjustment to your neck. Very very rarely, it can cause an issue with the vertebral artery. I believe that is normally associated with neck and/or side of head pain tho. But very good to get it checked out. The numbness thing is what has me thinking... Perhaps you had a bone spur or herniated disc and the adjustment aggrevated it? Who knows, but maybe ask Dr abt an MRI. Good luck and I hope you feel better soon. It's hard being a single mom, and then health issues crop up. Hang in there!! Sending prayers and good vibes!

      I will do.

I had x rays done before the treatment luckily.

Thanks I hope we all do. It’s not fair at all that we are left to suffer like this

Yeah and I’m regretting it now.

It could just be coincidence but I’m not risking it.

It was the twisting kind, I’m not even sure if this is anything to do with it but I wish I’d just left it be.

I have other back problems too, mainly being the scoliosis in my lower back but I manage it well. Chronic pain soon becomes normal and I deal with it.

This whole experience however is not something I am dealing with so well. I am trying but the pre-existing anxiety disorder is not helping. I am going to chat with my gp about this and try and get an additional medication to help me relax in the worst times x

That sounds like  how my ‘bad’ attacks are.  I get very hot, nauseous, and have to lay down.   I’ve never had the pins and needles though.

Literally never experienced something like that before.

I can’t express how grateful I am not to have had the nystagmus since taking betahistine though!!
