Hi Taz, I was on olanzipine on and off for about 15 years, I always struggled with the weight gain. I have been off it for about 3 weeks now because it caused a terrible conjunctivitis and watery eye that watered so much that the skin under my eye would sting. I looked it up online and sure enough that is one of the side effects that people can experience. It is a lot better now it waters a lot less than it did.

My metabolism is great now, I can eat more and even if I eat a considerable amount of fatty foods over a couple of days I don't put on weight.

I have bipolar and my doctor put me on sodium valproate so that I could easily go off olanzipine without the heavy withdrawal side effects that olanzipine can cause. Olanzipine is very difficult drug to go off once u have been on it for a long time so be aware of this.

If u are going to continue staying on the olanzipine I would try to minimise the amount of carbohydrates u eat, too much carbohydrates like bread, pasta, cereals can put on weight. I was eating and snacking on vegies, hommous, avocado dip with raw vegie sticks like cucumber, celery or carrot sticks and salads are a really healthy snack too and fruit is as well. I tend to eat my fruit on an empty stomach like for breakfast I eat as much fresh fruit and a little dried fruit and then half an hour later I have what I want. If u mix fruit with other foods especially grains it can cause fermentation in the gut and cause weight gain. If u want to eat fruit again after having a meal u need to wait until the stomach is empty which is 4 hours after a meal.

U can eat as much fresh fruit, salad as long as it doesn't have cheese in it, and cooked vegies, not including white potatoes, as u like and u won't put on weight. This is what i did when I was on olanzipine when I felt like snacking I would sometimes make myself a salad or steam some sweet potato and melt coconut oil over the sweet potato and sprinkle some celtic salt, a simple but yummy snack. It would be good if u could exercise it will make u feel good, even if u can do some fast walking.

I wish u all the best.

Thanks thats a good deal of info I didn't know. I'm dreading the weight gain. I have chronic asthma and also other medical conditions that stop even a fast walk or exercise.  Looks like walk as best I can and look at my diet. If anyones got any dietry tricks I most welcome more info. Thanks again taz.

Hi Tazjosie, another tip I wanted to share with u is that if u get that urge that u want to keep snacking on carbhohydrates like biscuits and dry things like corn chips etc. have a handful of almonds it will stop that craving. Eating sugar can createt that craving to consume more carbhoydrates too. I have experienced this many times. So if u if u want to stop that craving have a handful of almonds, because u want to make sure u don't overeat.

If u have asthma it would be worthwhile seeing a naturopath there could be a certain food that triggers your asthma, dairy can be one of these foods and if u have low levels of zinc this can cause asthma too. Just a thought because if u could get on top of your asthma u will be able to get some good exercise, and exercise makes u feel good and increases your metabolism but it needs to be exercise where u get your heart rate up.

    All the best!

Hi Tazjosie, I think that it is an indiviual thing i would find sometimes that it would take up to a week to feel the full effects of olanzipine. May I ask why u r going on olanzipine? Olanzipine does help u sleep and relieve anxiety, I have discovered some fantstic info online about B3 relieving anxiety, depression and insomnia and u know what it works I have been using it for at least a month now.

Almonds stop that carbohydrate craving that's why I suggested them. I read about it online and I tried it and it works. I would find that olanzipine when i was taking it, in tAhe late afternoon I would start craving carbs and I was concerned about eating too much carbs because I know that it can put weight on.

Another suggestion of what u can snack on that i thought of yesterday is soup, u can have as much soup as u like as long as it doesn't have dairy or cream in it. I stayed away from dairy when I was on olanzipine too because I knew that i can get carried away with how much of it I eat so I ended up becoming vegan and I am so healthy now, and i feel lighter and my digestion is better.

Hya. Thanks again for info. Im transferring becouse my old anti psychotic wasnt working well enough and I had bad urine retention when on qeutiepine and became tachacardic. I changed to clopixal but still no good, my anxiety and psychosis and tachycardia was still really bad. My gp couldn't put me on beta blockers becouse I'm asthmatic and it would killed me. Thats why we are trying olanzapine. I have added pressure at moment and my anxiety levels are throu the roof. I just hope it works.

Hi Josie, I hope u are ok!

I looked it up online and it said that the maximum amount of olanzipine u can take per day is 20 mgs a day.

I hope that your anxiety has lessened.

I discovered about 5 days ago that I have candida again. I have suffered from it off and on for the last 10 years. I need to be careful about how much sugar I consume each day. I got carried away again. Candida is in imbalance of gut bacteria, it means I have an overabundance of yeast in my gut which is fed by sugar and dried fruit. So I was suffering from anxiety at times which has been taken care of my vitamin B3 and I have been waking up with terrible anxiety which has been relieved by another natural supplement called lithium orotate.

Josie if u r still suffering from anxiety I would try a natural supplement, I find vitamin B3 works wonderfully for me. I have been able to successfully cut my sodium valproate dosage down by half, by taking a really good magnesium supplement in the morning and Vitamin B3 at lunch and dinner.

Thanks again. Im now on 20mls per day split 10mls bd . I've had a panic attack for no reason. I have never had them bfor. I don't think the olanzapine is helping that, but I am seeing some improvement.  How long does it take to b at it's full therapeutic level. ???

Thanx. I've talked to my dr about b3 and she's going to see if it can b proscribed.

Am doing well on the olanzapine, just worried if I get used to side affects as slight sedation is helping a lot.  Get bad again round 6pm.???

Hi Tazjosie, u can buy vitamin B3 from a health food store it doesn't need to be prescribed and u need to make sure u get the one that has a warning on the bottle that says that it may cause flushing. U want to get that flushing affect so that u know that u are getting enough. I take 100mgs with each meal. I started with 50mgs and found that it wasn't enough so for the next meal that day I increased to 100 mgs and i had the flushing effect. Flushing is when u get a tingling hot sensation and sometimes u can get a rash all these symptoms should clear up within 10 minutes. If your symptoms last for half an hour u are taking too much and u could decrease it by 25mgs. I bought the 100mg strength capsules and when i started i was opening up the capsules and putting in half of the amount with water. It was easy.

Dought I'll b allowed them.  I will see. I have to give the olanzapine a go to see if that agrees with me. Im starting to get less tired on them now late mornings is the worse. As for weight gain and craving carbs hasn't been an issue.  Helping with my psychosis a bit as well and I'm less stressed until about 6 , 7 o'clock then I feel it wearing off. Have found I get a very dry mouth but the salavix sorts that out.

U know what Tazjosie I have really loved chatting on another part of this forum with people who are weaning themselves off olanzipine. U r going down the road of planning to be on it and hoping it will treat u.

After about 15 years of being on and off it myself it eventually stopped working so I was forced to go off it, which I have been wanting to do for 5 years now.

If u are interested in a natural supplement that will help u feel more relaxed at night time I am willing to share. I have spent a lot of time researching natural supplements and I dont' run these things past my doctor. Doctors only know about drugs pharmaceutical drugs and they get incentives from pharmaceutical companies to encourage them to prescribe drugs. I have successfully cut my dosage of sodium valproate down by half by using natural supplements, eating well and daily exercise, and i had counselling for about a year to address all my issues in my relationship with my mother. If u want to get well it is not simply about focussing on the drug and expecting that to be a cure all u need to do some counselling or meditating and look deep inside yourself and find out what your issues are.

      Good luck my friend.

I meditate regularly as I am a crystal healer and work on a lot of intuition.  I have §everal holistic therapies for other people at my disposal.  In which I am active at present. I have just started cbt with a Dr And hope that will help me with my difficulties.  I know I have to work through my difficulties as medication can help but is not " a cure " I have been fighting this for as long as I can remember and spent six years in St Andrews hosp Northampton following many years in a local psyc hospital. But it still raises its ugly head when I least expect it. I have been in CBT for years on and off but I still suffer many problems. Their doesn't seem to b any answers so I struggle on  with a visit occasionally in ICU. I don't know where to turn to next. I have done many therapies but always end up with no answers . I struggle on regardless.

      Hi Tazjosie,

U poor thing, I can understand and sympathise how difficult it is for you.

One thing I can honestly say is that olanzipine did not help me. I totally agree with my husband when he would say that everytime I would go back onto it after going off it for a while that it would make me irritable, it would eliminate my anxiety but I would be irritable and dull. I feel so much more lively and more like myself not being on it.

I have personally found that sodim valproate which is now prescribed for people like myself with bipolar is brilliant. It stops the high emotions that I used to suffer from. I had a psychotic attack about 18 years ago and I believe honestly that the olanzipine made me worse. I dont' recall having anxiety problems until I started using olanzipine and then everytime I would try to go off it I would have anxiety attacks and I didn't become more well, I became more mentally unwell.

Diet is soooooo important I eat wholegrain wholemeal pasta and breads I make sure that my liver is functioning well because that causes schizophrenia and various mental problems when not functioning well. Symptoms of an unwell liver are cravings for sugary foods, irritablility and fatigue and sleeping problems and digestive problems, digestive problems leads to anxiety. A healthy gut means a healthy mind.

U can cleanse your liver by having  warm water with a freshly squeezed lemon first thing in the morning. U can also like I do put a teaspoon of organic cloudy, this u can buy from a health food store or some supermarkets, apple cider vinegar in my drink bottle and I drink it throughout the day. I eat grains but I eat wholesome whole grains like wholegrain oats so that I get all of the necessary vitamins and minerals, white bread and cereals made from white rice have had all the nutrients stripped from them. I eat fresh fruit and I make sure I have fresh foods like either a salad or salad sandwich and a vegie meal each day.

I have myself also found that vitamin B3 (Niacin) has really helped relieve my anxiety. I am such a believer in natural supplements, I have been for a long time. B3 relieves anxiety, bipolar disorder, alcoholism and insomnia. I don't know if u drink alcohol or not but I would be careful how much u drink too. I don't drink at all. Alchohol attacks whatever organ in the body that is not functioning well.

I really want to help u if I can Tazjosie.

I did counselling for a year with a good counsellor that did cognitive behavioural therapy with me and I felt completely comfortable telling him anything. Do u have someone in your life that is there for u that u can talk to about anything? My dad is always there for me and I am so grateful I find that talking to him really helps.

I am here for u Tazjosie. Please take a good look at your diet and take care of your liver and u might be surprised how much better u start feeling.

Oh one more thing healthy oils is so important for the liver too. Vegetable oil and any polyunsaturated oils and margarine are bad for your body and liver. Saturated oils like coconut oil, macadamia oil and palm oil are best for cooking because they have a high cooking point which means that they don't overheat and burn when this happens and u injest it is toxic. This is why so many people have heart problems because they are consuming the wrong oils. Olive oil should never be heated it has a low cooking point it should only be used unheated on salads or in spreads like hommous or dips.

      Good luck my friend.

Thankyou for your continued support and help. I have a CPN who I can talk to " once a week " and I see my psyc Dr once a month. I have a close friend who I can talk to a little bit. I also go to a Art group. I enjoy all of these when I'm ok but when poorly don take part in any I just stay at home with my two cats " Smokey and the Bandit. I love them to bits. I have just noticed im putting on weight so will not be drinking as much. Have to cut down.  I am a x smoker but am useing e pen's to help with anxiety. This works well. I use 0 mgs menthol. No nickateen , tar or other substances found in cigarets. Just a vegetable suspension with menthol flavour.  Hope to hear from you again.

Hi Josie, I have been busy with school and socialising and then I got my period and got really exhausted and the same thing happened last month, i also suffer from sleeping issues every time I get my period so I started thinking there is something I'm eating regularly that is causing all this. So I started thinking about the eat right for your type, the diet for your blood group and sure enough it is recommended to avoid wheat and to eat spelt bread or spelt flour. I recall clearly how in the past when i have avoided all wheat products that i have felt much better, my digestive problems went away and had much more energy. I was experiencing digestive problems again and I have been on and off for the last couple of weeks.

So I was thinking that it would be worthwhile u looking into this type of eating too. U see when u have digestive problems this causes anxiety, depression, mood swings it is all intercollected.

I have had enough of my mood swings and I want to have lots of energy again. I also didn't have the terrible itchy scalp and itchy skin I have been suffering from for weeks. So it was probably the wheat that was causing it. I will see tomorrow what happens because I didn't take my sodium valproate today so I will take it tomorrow and see what happens, the sodium valproate can cause itchy skin, but i will see for sure tomorrow.

Some people need to avoid wheat and gluten. I am going to try and avoid eating too much oats too, it said that I can have oats once a week so I bought myself some healthy but yummy brown rice cereal and I luv it and the kids luv it 2.

I apologise for taking so long to post a message I have had a lot going on.

I look forward to hearing from u soon.

I have IBS and also have itchy scalp and skin. I use TGel for washing my hair and I use Diprobase for washing/ shower ect both these are proscribed.  I am unable to use soap or many washing up liquids.  The two I stick to ate Arial and bold. These two dont make me itch. Since being on olanzapine I have found both ablutions are back to normal. Which is great seeing when on quetiapine I couldn't wee and was catheterised and they wanted me to have a super which I would have an operation and have an external bag in situ.  This I refused and had to self catheterise . Since being off quetiapine my waterworks improved and now on olanzapine both urine and bowels are working normal.  To my great relief. I have since lost a couple of kilos , sleep a lot better and am much happier in myself as my mood has also lifted.  Fortunately I dont get tired on olanzapine like most but feel more relaxed and with the help of diazapam my tachycardia is under control. I couldn't b put on beta blockers as I have acute asthma and it could kill me. ( no exaggeration ) . According to GP. The procycladine has stopped my restless legs and I dont dream much now which I get a better sleep at night as on the temazapan I got bad nights due to dreaming even though it does help me sleep. I have bought some almonds and snack on home made ice blocks. ( sugar free ) as I have found the main side affect  me on olanzapine.  Other than that all is good. I have to stick to a strict night regime so I have to go to bed now as just took meds. Speak soon. TC. Tazjosie.
