Nicotine Vs Colitis

Hi Guys,

What i am about to say is unbelievable. I did a search on google for "can nicotine cure colitis" and what came up is incredible! There seems to be a link between smoking and colitis. As in not many smokers develope colitis in fact they say that out of x amount of patients who have Ulcerative colitis only about 10% of them are smokers the rest are made up of non-smokers or ex-smokers. Me im the later i packed up smoking about 3 yrs ago and a year ago i was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. Now this dont mean im gonna go out and buy 20 bensons but there are now alternatives to getting nicotine inside us. Theres vaper fags or nicotine patches. Im defo going to give one a try because i am sick of running to the loo every hour! So guys how many of you are ex-smokers and developed UC after they packed up? Has anybody in our group started smoking again and had positive results? When i was diagnosed with UC just over a year ago my consultant asked me if i was a smoker and when i said i had packed it in he said then that was a link between smoking and UC. When i read up on my google search you can even get nicotine suppositories, @#@# that! ive had enough botty action to last me a life time im going for the other alternatives. Give me your thoughts please guys.

Hi everyone. I'm recently diagnosed with what they seem pretty sure is ulcerative colitis, although I have some more hospital investigations to check it's def not Crohns. Not so long ago I asked one of the specialists about the benefits of smoking for Colitis, and she confirmed that it will in fact help coliti, but will make Crohns worse. Also it seems you don't have to have been a smoker prior to being diagnosed with colitis, to benefit from symptom relief from smoking!.. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-2201475/Doctors-dont-know-best-Student-claims-cured-debilitating-bowel-disease-taking-smoking.html

      Hi Mark084

Yeah mate ive seen it and he was a non-smoker. I started this link about ciggies and colitis after doing much internet research about it, i even joined a forum in the USA and our American cousins with UC are of the same opinion as us. I recently had an appointment with my consultant and he was about to put me on another change of tablets when i dropped the bomb-shell on him that i was going to re-start smoking. Well his face lit up mate and he sat there nodding and agreeing with me as i explained all my research. He said we know about the link with nicotine and colitis but cant explain it. This is the best bit!!! He gave me the presciption and said sit on it dont take it yet Start Smoking and i will see you in 6 weeks. Well ive been on the fags now for just over a week and have noticed some small changes already. The biggest change is ive cut down my night time visits to the loo from 3/5 visits to 1 visit and...... i even slept through wlth no visits one night. Now dont get me wrong its not for everybody and it might not work for everybody but i have had enough of this BLOODY UC and i will give the ciggies a go before i go down the anti-immune drugs and surgery road. Worse ways if it dont work out i can always pack up smoking again. So its been a week and a bit so far and early days for a full diagnosis but i will keep all informed on my ciggie recovery. Still not too sure if it works for non-smokers guys?
