Normal testing and still have bad gallbladder/pain?

Is it possible to have all normal testing and still have a bad gallbladder?

Since the 1st week of sept I have been suffering from RUQ pain, nausea after meals, sometimes nausea out of the blue, pain in my right shoulder blade, fatigue, lack to no energy level, 12 lbs weight loss, pain in my right shoulder neck area, mix between constipation and diarrhea but mostly constipation and heartburn! The pain is constant and never goes away.

All of my testing keeps coming back normal. Ultrasound of the gallbladder, Hida scan (my result was 48%), Ct Scan, celiac biopsy, h.pylori, other blood work( amylase/lipase normal), endoscopy, MRI, ct of the head, pelvic ultrasound! We have also had a 2nd opinion with a GI Dr and established with a new GP and spoke to a surgeon (we have another appt 11/12)!

All testing keeps coming back NORMAL!!! (Which is good)

Can all these test still come back normal and you still have a bad gallbladder?

Has this ever happen to anyone?

Certainly I'm not the only one this is happened too! Any help is welcomed!

Hi all, i've been having gastric problems for multiple years now. i've had a colonoscopy, endoscopy, hida scan, test for celiac multiple blood tests.

The symptoms im having is everytime i eat i can literally feel my food hit my stomach because it's super gurgly and crampy. i get acid reflux every now and then and no matter what i eat i'm gassy and bloated. it's super uncomfortable and i'm sick of living like this.

When i had my colonoscopy the doctor said i had a twisted colon. when i had my endoscopy he couldn't take any biopsies because he said i had too much bile in my stomach. (i hadn't ate anything since 7pm the night before) The last test i had was the hida with kineva scan. it took my gallbladder a long time to show up 77 minutes to show up. according to the technician this usually means your gallbladder has to come out. however my ejection fraction was 77% and says that's normal. and also no evidence of cholytitis.

I just really don't know what to do at this point because when i went to see my doctor he was like "well we think it's your gallbladder because everything else came back negative so you have a sick gallbladder" but according to the tests everything's normal? can anyone shed some light on this situation i'm just highly confused because all the symptoms im reading people have back pain and things of that nature and i don't have any of that. i'm also worried about post gallbladder and that i'll get it out and still have the same issues?

I have had the same symptoms off and on for the last few years. It would last two or three weeks and then get better. Last September it came on again and lasted six weeks. Currently I've had it for two months and have had several tests; Endoscope, colonoscopy, ultrasound, HIDA scan and barium swallow along with blood work. Barium swallow showed a narrowing in the lower esophagus  which could be Achalasia, although I 'm scheduled to have a test to check for that in the coming weeks. HIDA scan showed normal gall bladder function but possible Sphincter of Oddi disorder. There is a specific test to check for that as well but my doctor said because my blood work came back normal he can't recommend me getting the test done. It has to be performed out of state at a major hospital since no one locally has the equipment to test for it. So frustrating! I've had stomach pain, nausea, lightheadedness, indigestion, belching, and weakness which has totally taken over my life.

Hi Laura, you may want to start your own discussion as the originator of this one hasn't replied for 6 months so I don't know if its active anymore.

If you start a new discussion then lots of people will be able to answer you rather than just those few that are on this discussion.

      take care

Same symptoms. Finally got an appointment with a specialist but have to wait until September to see them. I made the appointment back in May. Very frustrated that it's taking so long.

Yes it is very possible. I started having problems in my early twenties. I had too many ultrasounds, nuclear scan, etc but tests were normal. It wasn't until I moved and changed family physicians that help was given to me. When I went in with my usual symptoms, my Dr was going to send me for an ultrasound. He stopped and asked how many I had and said it's not going to tell us anything. He asked if I had ever been sent for a consultation with a surgeon. I had not. He sent me for one and the surgeon told me if testing hasn't revealed anything in a year, something is wrong. He had my surgery approved. My gallbladder had stopped functioning properly & was dying. There were deeply embedded stones. I was in my early 40's when the surgery was completed. The surgeon told me if it had ruptured, I would have died. In my 30's, I was in ER very nauseated with a fever of 105-106F. I was admitted. At 2:00am, I began to vomit thick green bile. After I had done that, my fever began to rapidly drop. I was in the hospital for 3 days & the Dr ordered an ultrasound. Apparently by that time it was considered routine & it was ordered for a Saturday. I was released and was to reschedule it. Maybe if the ER physician would have ordered one when the high fever was there, etc., it may have shown something.

After it was removed in my early 40's, the symptoms disappeared. If you continue to have pain, etc,, push for them to do something. Tests don't show everything. Hopefully your condition has been taken care of by now. I wish you good health. Sharon smile

    I have a few questions.

What were the signs and/or symptoms?

    How old were you?

      Hi Rob,

I'm responding to you because I see that you posted just several days ago.  I'm going through some of the same issues that jw454 had and was wondering if you are similar to me.

Several months ago I started having severe nausea primarily at night after going to bed.  I ended up in the ER several times before going to a GI dr who immediately suspected gallstones.  To make a long story short after 2 hospital stays comprising 6 days and the following test done: Upper GI where I was diagnosed with gerd and a small ulcer (now taking protonix, a ppi), hida scan which came back normal but they didn't give me a number, colonoscopy which was clear, MRCP scan which is a very detailed MRI of gallbladder, liver and pancreas and that was all clear.

At my last ER trip, approximately 2 weeks ago, my liver enzymes were elevated, so now my GI dr has me following up with a liver dr.  My liver numbers came down while I was in the hospital.

The ER trip I just mentioned followed a day of eating some fatty foods that I hadn't been eating because of the gerd and ulcer.

Although all these gallbladder tests are clear, it's my gut (no pun intended) feeling that all these problems are being initiated there.  Liver enzymes can rise with gallbladder issues.  I'm planning on finding another GI dr as well as following up with the liver dr.

If you saw in the thread, jw454 ending up having her gall bladder removed, hopefully that solved her problems.

Anyway, I'm new to this website and thought I'd respond to you since it sounds like a familiar situation.

I just had my gallbladder removed yesterday. 1st trip to ER all my levels were perfect. They told me I had GERD . My daughter insisted on an ultrasound to check gallbladder so ER referred me to have one the next day as an outpatient. It was tge longest night ever... so much pain .. went back for ultrasound yesterday and was adniyted for emergency surgery immediately.

I'm glad I found this thread because I'm starting to feel hopeless, although I guess I haven't been suffering nearly as long as many people! For the past 9 months or so I've had to nagging pain under my right rib cage that would come on after eating and during exercise. Over the past month it has gotten much worse. It is so sore I can't wear a regular bra b/c the wire presses into it, and when I try to workout I have this weird feeling like I can't breath deeply (just this summer I was racing my road bike up mountains and now I'm struggling to do any cardio in the gym!). Then over this last weekend the pain intensified and I woke up in the middle of the night with shooting pain like nerve pain down to my belly button. It got worse over the weekend and Monday morning I went straight to the doctor. I couldn't even sit or stand up straight, I was just buckled over in pain. The doctor suspected gallstones and/or appendicitis so ordered a CT scan but it came back completely normal. Later that night things continued to get worse and I started also having lower abdominal cramping and back pain (mind you, I've been having back pain on my right side only for the past month). Between the back pain and abdominal pain I couldn't sleep at all. Next morning I made a bunch of phone calls and was able to see my GI doctor. I also had urine that was dark brown and with some brown particulates in it (WTF...). My GI doctor ordered up a bunch of blood work and so far it has all come back completely normal. I'm lost. I don't know how this is possible. I'm now starting to feel better (rib cage pain still there but back pain and belly button pain is better), but what on EARTH was that episode??? What if it happens again? Should I just go to the ER and hope they find something? Gallbladder problems run in my family btw. My dad and grandfather both had their gallbladders removed in their 20s. I'm in my 30s.

Hey I recently found this page too after having URQ abdominal discomfort develop in the last 2 weeks. There was heavy alcohol consumption prior to this and then 2 weeks ago my first symptom was a red rash that developed on my face and neck. No Rash since then.

About 3-4 days later a small nigling feeling started under my ribcage and occasionally over the next few days would go through to my back.

Ultrasound came back normal. Elevated liver tests returned to normal. Good Cholesterol HDL is slightly raised. Stools were normal. In the last few days have been orange and fluffy (which indicates inflammation, although I had been taking Turmeric supplements) I was taking liver detox stuff from the Naturopath who says its nature equivalent also Intestamine support. Milk Thistle 35000mg daily capsules seems to reduce a feeling of swelling quite significantly so I can drive and lie down etc. where as when I first developed symptoms it was so uncomfortable I had trouble falling asleep (around 6/10)

Doctor told me to take painkillers for 3 days and see what happens to the pain - which is now only around 5/10 on average.

I wonder if doing a Liver flush with epsom salts etc. like people are doing on Youtube, would help get rid of these gall bladder stones that most people on this thread seem to be referring to.

Getting a second opinion tomorrow. Might need to do all the scans the you guys have been getting to rule things out.
