Normal testing and still have bad gallbladder/pain?

Is it possible to have all normal testing and still have a bad gallbladder?

Since the 1st week of sept I have been suffering from RUQ pain, nausea after meals, sometimes nausea out of the blue, pain in my right shoulder blade, fatigue, lack to no energy level, 12 lbs weight loss, pain in my right shoulder neck area, mix between constipation and diarrhea but mostly constipation and heartburn! The pain is constant and never goes away.

All of my testing keeps coming back normal. Ultrasound of the gallbladder, Hida scan (my result was 48%), Ct Scan, celiac biopsy, h.pylori, other blood work( amylase/lipase normal), endoscopy, MRI, ct of the head, pelvic ultrasound! We have also had a 2nd opinion with a GI Dr and established with a new GP and spoke to a surgeon (we have another appt 11/12)!

All testing keeps coming back NORMAL!!! (Which is good)

Can all these test still come back normal and you still have a bad gallbladder?

Has this ever happen to anyone?

Certainly I'm not the only one this is happened too! Any help is welcomed!

    Hi Samantha,

I went through similar issues that actually lasted 5 years!! Part of what made my diagnosis difficult was that for the 1st 3 years, I only had the pain; the GI symptoms didn’t start until the 4th year.

I saw many doctors, had endless procedures & tests:

2 HIDA scans, 3 ERCPs, 4 MRCPs, Upper Endoscopy, ultrasound, CT scan & MRI. I did tons of physical therapy, massage & had numerous Intercostal Nerve Blocks. I went to the Mayo Clinic last February & March, & after they ruled out cancer, they were done trying to help. I even had 2 surgeries, to move & then later, remove the spinal cord stimulator that helped mitigate chronic nerve pain from an unrelated spinal cord condition (The battery & wires were under my skin on the right side of my belly & one doctor suggested that they were aggravating nerves.).

I went to a new GI doctor last month, & she was shocked that no one had suggested taking out my gallbladder (Even though I'd had 2 HIDA scans that showed it was working). She referred me to a surgeon & I saw him on 12/6. On 12/8, he did exploratory surgery & found that my gallbladder was stuck to my liver with tons of scar tissue (adhesions). Additionally, my gallbladder looked infected & was leaking bile into my stomach cavity. He removed my gallbladder & the adhesions, & when the pathology came back, it showed I’d had a long term, chronic gallbladder infection. The condition is called Chronic Cholecystitis.

I’m just past 2 weeks post op, & while the pain is still there intermittently (it used to be constant), my surgeon said that was totally normal, & it should resolve in the next 4-6 weeks. I can’t believe it took 5 years…it was physically & emotionally draining; I withdrew from my friends & I haven’t been myself for a long time. I can’t wait to get myself back, & be able to do the things that my husband & I used to enjoy.

My suggestion is to get a referral to a surgeon, & bring up Chronic Cholecystitis.  I’ll pray that this is resolved for you ASAP. Wishing you a Joyful & Peace Filled Christmas!

Kat, I am so Glad You Posted. I need someone who is willing to do Exploratory Surgery on me. I have been Chronically ill for 25 yrs & Know Something is VERY WRONG. I am having no luck with any Drs I have seen. No one will LISTEN TO ME. I hate the thought of living like this & it's so unnecessary. I have an appointment with another GI Dr (recommended by a Dr @ an ER Ifrequent) 1-2. I'm guessing you live in Idaho..maybe Louisanna, lol. Wondering if there's any chance of seeing your Drs? I am so concerned I have my affairs in Order. Shawn

How did you handle your issue? I've been struggling for months with pain under the right rib cage, pain in the right back, and right shoulder pain. Ultrasound, MRI, CT and blood test all came back normal. Now thinking about HIDA and endoscopy. This is quite frustrating.

Hi - did you ever get your issue resolved with your gallbladder?  My daughter is having the same issues

Have you tried anything for lactose intolerance?  It took lots of test for me to finally figure out on my own that I was latose intolerant. I had alot of the same symptoms.

add me to the long line here, in my early 50s, problems going on two years now, ultrasounds negative, HIDA scan just below normal @ 35. Runs in the family, disease with out stones.  A small but fatty meal at relative's set me off - like my right lower rib was smacked with a hammer, unusual low appetite (nausea was the worst the day after, but my appetite is still lower than normal), night sweats and heat-like pain now a few days later, some pain radiating back, up and to the left, urine slightly darker. 4 days in and pain is waning slowly, slow healing. Waiting for latest blood results, but don't expect much because I waited too many days, you have to do it in the worst of the pain. Sometimes I have apple juice with a spike of apple cider vinegar to help manage the issue, have a low to medium fat diet, but may have to go back to just low fat diet.

      Hi Bamster,

I’m about 6 months in of feeling bad with generally the same symptoms that were very acute in the beginning with me laying on the bathroom floor with severe nausea. Now it’s turned into a chronic illness that gets bad with fatty meals and even has caused my liver enzymes to elevate, then return back to normal after resuming low fat diet.

At first, normal ultrasound, Hida scan and MRCP.   They had me consulting with a liver doctor because my liver numbers were elevated.

Then a retired doctor friend of mine referred to a world class gastro doctor here in Houston.  He did an endoscopic ultrasound and found gallstones which then led the liver doctor to have me consult with a surgeon about gallbladder removal. The surgeon said the symptoms including the elevated liver enzymes are classic gallbladder problems. I’m having it removed in 3 days.

If you can, find a top notch doctor who can do an endoscopic ultrasound.   I’m amazed how many people there are like us who are misdiagnosed.  My first GI said GERD and just put me on PPIs, which actually just screwed my stomach up.  Keeping fighting and pushing.  Best of luck to you.

Dan, I'm wishing good luck on your surgery, I'm glad someone finally found the evidence to what you already knew. My symptoms were a little vague a year ago, but they are starting to become the classic signs, so its really a matter of time as the episodes become worse and take longer to get over and I'll be able to get the evidence I need, and push for all the tests. I hope for you that this is the final fix. I've heard/know of horror stories, but really I believe it one of the most common surgeries out there from my experience in nursing class rotation and know several people that are fine after surgery.

I started out having headaches everyday then a pain between my breast. Went to er several times thinking it was heart after lots of ekg IT IS NOT MY HEART. A year ago I was NOT told I had stones so to my surprise of course with just a blood test they yanked that out. Same pain going on daily finally switched to a GI dr and he took same blood work came back positive for gluten celiac disease. Wandering if I went through gallbladder removal for nothing clearly that was not where the problem was. Have been off gluten for lime a week no headaches no pain between my breast. Any questions feel free

Hello I see this post is a little bit older but I wanted to respond in hopes that my experience might help someone else I have had abdominal pain mostly left-sided off and on for the past 5 years I started getting severe pain about 7 months ago since then I've had an endoscopy colonoscopy another endoscopy numerous CT scans a HIDA scan and blood work which has all been normal time and again I was so frustrated I was nauseated vomiting sometimes felt terrible no energy and a persistent pain in my upper belly the doctor just kept putting me on proton pump inhibitors for gastritis which wasn't making any difference finally I want to see a surgeon and I had surgery yesterday they removed my gallbladder it was full of adhesions and scars I cannot begin to tell you how different I feel today that gnawing pain in my left upper abdomen is gone. there is pain from the surgery but it is nothing compared to the pain that I've had for the past 9 months my doctor showed me a picture of my gallbladder and it was most definitely in need of coming out I share this with anybody who's going through this and tell you to not give up and feel free to share my story with your doctors go to a surgeon who has years of experience who has seen people feel so much better after their gallbladders come out!

thank you sheila for sharing your experience.I too sufer from lot of acid reflux, with lot of burping and bloating. I was diagnosed with gastritis and also non working gallbladder with gallstones. My surgeon feels even if i remove the gallbladder, i will have issues due to gastritis. But non of the PPI is working for me now . So i'm bit confused to remove my gallbladder or not. Did you had lot of bloating and burping in addition to pain?

Does anyone else have vertigo, too? That’s becoming my

      Most prominent symptom

In addition to the gnawing upper right side pain in front and right shoulder blade pain in back plus chest pain/GERD-like pain

How is your vertigo? Room spinning or when you turn or move your head, you feel like falling down? For me, it's not room spinning, when I move my head left right or focus on anything I will feel spaced out.

      I literally feel like I’m

I’m a boat slowly rocking side to side. Yuck! Miserable 😔

Yes..this seems to be like imbalance compared to vertigo. I survived with these symptoms for 7 years... This goes like a cycle...when you diet with no fat/ protein/oil it will be under control but anything you add then it becomes severe. How long are u suffering with this issue?

It’s been about 8-9 days total, but the vertigo has only been constant and bad for a couple days.

I too have been experiencing excruciating pain on my upper left side of my abdomen under my rib age. I had my gallbladder removed about ten years ago after having acute pancreatitis twice in two months. They did all of the bloodwork and ct scans etc and said nothing was wrong but my regular doctor kept pushing and the surgeon was reluctant since there didn’t seem to be any evidence from the tests that my gallbladder needed to be removed. Turns out he said that in the twent years of being a surgeon that my gallbladder was the worst one that he had ever seen. I immediately felt better and went on with my life however I will occasionally get severe upper left abdominal pain which seems to come out of nowhere and last for about a week or so. I’ve had tons of testing done, endoscopy, colonoscopy, ct scan with contrast and all kinds of bloodwork. I had an attack last week that put me into the ER where they ran bloodworks and a ct scan and said there wasn’t anything showing except for an enlarged spleen but said that it shouldn’t be causing me pain. It’s very frustrating when there is something so very wrong and the doctors just keep saying that they can’t find anything. The ER Dr wanted me to have my regular dr put in for an mri of my stomach but My GI Dr is now wanting me to go to a University hours away to get an endoscopic ultrasound done. I’m not sure what the difference would be but I’m hoping that perhaps that option might show more than an mri? There’s something very wrong with me and I just want them to figure it out. I lost 3 lbs in 3 days and was in so much pain for a week that even the prednisone, nerve pain pills and hydrocodone haven’t helped. The Dilaudid that they gave me in the hospital helped but still didn’t even make the pain go away which I remember was the only thing that helped when I initially had the pain before having my gallbladder removed. I also get severe gas and bloating without rhyme or reason and I’m on a proton pump inhibitor. This is so very frustrating and I hope that everyone here gets answers soon. I know two people that passed away from having pancreatitis and I’ve heard that you can still get that even if your gallbladder is removed so it’s a very scary time when I have this pain. Does  anyone else have a similar story?

In the last year I have had severe lightheadedness and have felt like I was going to pass out. I have had to have several iron infusions and that seems to help but I’m not sure that there isn’t something else going on. I hope that your symptoms go away soon and that you start feeling better.

Hi! I’m also anemic, but I’ve never had this vertigo/dizzy/faint feeling before. I definitely think it’s tied to the gallbladder but I am unsure if that’s true. Do you also have gallbladder issues? I hope you’re feeling better too!

I feel dizziness is more related to overall digestive system health...some folks who had only gb issue and removed it might fixed their dizziness..some might have stomach issues...also seems he has removed his gb 10 years back.

Does sound like epigastric or stomach pain, ? Ulcers . No elevated  Amylase for pancreatitis?  Enlarged spleen-reason?  Platlet  disorder, recent viral exposure such as mono. Please monitor spleen, can rupture if too enlarged.  To help with symptoms until endocrine- make home made ginger-cumcuber water , I use stevia to sweeten. Naturally helps with  nausea and bloating.

They've ruled out ulcers during my last endoscopy just a few months ago.  And the weird thing is that my stomach doesn't hurt, it's not like a tummy ache. All labs (amylase and lipase) were normal.  No reason given to me as to why my spleen would be enlarged. And my platlets were elevated at my last lab but not sure why.  I don't believe that I have had mono although I know that it can be present even when someone doesn't suspect it.  I'll be seeing the specialist next week so I'm hopeful that they can help me get to the bottom of this.  Thanks for the drink tip, I will give it a try.
