Numbness and at times pain in foot after Hip Replacement

Posted , 31 users are following.

If anyone can help me It would be much appreciated my father had a total hip replacement in August 2014 and after day 2 post op has experienced numbness in foot and toes and at times severe pain in that area and lower part of his leg, this keeps him awake at night. His actual hip is repairing well but has now been left with this awful discomfort.....if anyone has gone through the same or knows of anyone please advise of treatment or next steps....it's obvious nerve damage has occured. Thanks in advance.

Hi Elizabeth I hope your father is feeling better by now I just wanted to let you know my husband had a thr done 7 weeks ago and has the same problems as your father. We've seen the surgeon and his solution was sedatives and painkillers which we weren't happy about. The major problem was sleeping or not being able to. We seem to have found a partial solution that may sound odd. My husband noticed that the sensitivity on top of his foot lessened with a bit of massage or rubbing so I did this for a few minutes in the evening and he then put on a sock going to bed unbelievable though it may seem he was then able to sleep and wasn't woken during the night by the shooting pains so far this is doing the trick and he has discontinued the painkillers except for the occasional paracetamol. No sedative either. While the problem is still there and he may have to live with a certain amount of it at least he is now getting sleep and can manage during the day. My husband is 49 so the thought of more meds for the rest of his life was daunting not to mention the possible side effects. I hope your father is feeling much improved and who knows this trick might work for him too. Regards

I would not want to speculate at this time. To early to tell. Make an appt with the surgeon. Sometimes it's a nerve problem and could be swelling pressure on nerve.

A MRI WILL HELP WITH THE DIAGNOSIS AND PROGNOSIS.

    take care.

    3 time THR

    HOPE

    Elizabeth,

I'm approching my 16th yr of drop foot and both feet feeling like being dipped in ice water.  Only one thing - GET LEGAL REPRESENTATION, do not let any filing limit hinder future action. Permanente dicked me around long enough then cut me loose, hope for the best plan for a war.

    HI Elizabeth

I had THR 7mths ago and had a horrendous time, the surgeon cut through my vein during the op and I lost 2.5 litres of blood during the op and had to have emergency blood transfusions to save my life. After a short time the physio who knew nothing of my history came and got me out of bed, I collasped and flatlined with my blood pressure at 50 over twenty. The crash team managed to save me and I survived again, I was moved to a private room where I stayed for 3 days.

The surgeon said my vein was still leaking but would heal on it's own, it didn't and it caused 2 hematomas followed by a massive 3rd hematoma that blew my wound apart. He then agreed to rush me back into theatre and finally stop the bleeding and clean out the wound which he did, 13 days later I was dishcharged. Since then I have been back and had an MRI scan and a nerve conduction test both according to him were ok and just showed a trapped siatic nerve that would correct itself in time. Now 7 months on I can't sit down for more than 10 mins because of the soreness and pain in my buttock and the back of my thigh where the third hematoma occured. I'm on pregabblin for the pain but it doesn't seem to help much and the pain running into my foot feels like an electric drill going through it, I also get the feeling of a crape bandage being tightened round my foot and toes. I keep going back to my doctor who says give it time but when like your Dad your in severe pain these words don't help. I feel that when you reach a certain age you are treat like an old car and are beyond repair and only fit for the scrapyard. I have also be told by my solicitors that I have no redress against the surgeon or the hospital as I signed a disclaimer before the op. I hope your dad finds some relief soon Elizabeth. Best Wishes Stuart.

Hi allan50598.  How did you make out with your surgeon on the 7th of November?  Was he able to determine just what is wrong and offer a solution to this?  I see my surgeon in less than two weeks and am anxious to hear what he has to say.  My ankle, top of foot to the toes and up the lower leg is very stiff and feels terrible and bothers me at night.  Would appreciate a note on here with your results.

Hopefully time will heal this for your father.  I had THR 2 months ago.  I had very severe swelling on the 4th day from sitting so long waiting to be discharged and a 3 hour drive home from the hospital.  The swelling had gone cosiderably other than the lower leg and behind the knee.  My foot is very stiff and hard and pains with electical like pains at times.  The foot feels wooden although i can walk and bend it for the exercises with difficulty.  I start therapy tomorrow and am hopeful this will help.  I see the hip doctor in two weeks as he wants to exemine my foot and ankle and lower leg to see just what is going on.  It has been teleconfrences twice since the surgery.  I had a THR 12 years ago on the other hip and there were no complications such as this and it was the same doctor.   I too feel that some nerve is affected and will heal in time.  It could take upwards of a few months or longer I would suspect.   This is very upsetting to say the least and I sypathize with anyone going through the same or similar thing.  It does keep one awake at nigh sometimes and very uncomfortable feeling throughout the day.  WIshing all good luck in a speed recovery.  I will report back on here again as time goes by with an update as to my progress.

Hi Elizabethstar5:  after re reading your entry I see it was back in 2014 so perhaps all is well now and you are not longer on here.  If you are still available would you plase answer my question as to how it all went for your father and what treatment was recommended?

I had that. I had a right the when I was 39 and I would say the hip went ok but god I had the worst nerve pain from my groin that would work down to my knee and my food. It was agony and had it for months. Treatment was gabapentin and ice on my food and oramorph.. it has to be the worst pain ever. I remember them trying to do physio on me before I could leave hospital but the pain in my food was just too sore.

It did fade and I just sometimes get pain in my foot but nothing compares to what it was.

Elizabeth, how has that numbness in your foot turned out. It's three years later and I just had hip surgery and find that my hip and foot are numb Mostly my foot. I also have the additional problem that the doctor didn't measure properly and put in a 2 inch longer prosthesis than what is necessary so I'm all off balance. I go for my first appointment tomorrow.
