Oh my god, I have an extra rib (cervical rib!)

Hi there,

I am one of the 1 in 200 people who have an extra rib. I just found out about, how do doctors and chiropractors miss something like this... I have been suffering for 5 years with neck and back pain.. yesterday I had a back scan for the first time when the chiro discovered the nasty rib!

so for 25 years I never knew this, anyone just had a similiar shocker like this?

I was asked by someone how the hell do you not realise that you have an extra rib.. well how does a person know!

To all the sufferers with this problem, take good care of yourself. In two weeks when I am through this pain (I am going to chiro 3 times a week !) I have to start exercising... perhaps a blessing in disquise becaus I am 7 kg overweight..

take care

I have 2 extra cervical ribs and low blood pressure, low blood sugar, I've been anemic most of my life but no asthma and don't know what my blood group is. All interesting stuff. I think these all characteristics of star-seeds. Don't know that for sure You can do a starseed quiz online. Not sure I believe all that stuff but it is interesting.

I have B+ blood type FYI. I found out my blood type by giving blood. They HAVE to find out your blood type before it's given to someone else. Of course, I've been turned away for being anemic. Eat a burger and give blood. You just call them up and ask. Super easy and you don't have to pay for it.

Hi - bloodgroup plain O - low pressure/sugar too & low B12 & Vit D - actually vitamins/minerals tend to be low with Thyroid trouble (could be the other way around?) both in your neck - not enough room in there methinks!

btw VitD controls Calcium (as does parathyroid glands) perhaps we just have extra calcium deposits alternatively everyone forms extra ribs (reptile-like!) but most disappear when still a foetus.

I tend to read too much!

Extra ribs are very common, some people have extra cervical ribs (so at the top of the ribcage) and other people have extra developed thoracic ribs (so at the bottom of your ribcage). This is not necessarily a problem, and like I said it is very common.

Having an extra rib does not mean you will get back or neck pain, it is just one of many factors that may predispose you to getting it. As such is is an interesting anomaly to have, but certainly nothing to worry too much about unless it gives you symptoms. For example if you ever developed TOS (Thoracic Outlet Syndrome) it would be very useful for the Doctor to know if you have an extra cervical rib and this would help guide the treatment.

Hi, before you found out from your GP about the extra rib, did it feel abnormal, not on line with the other side etc.

I am 15 and my left side of my rib cage, the bottom rib sticks out more than the right, it also is not on line with it, the fact of the matter is i am worried o may have the same problem. Ahh.

    Hi

could you please share some info about the type of excercises one can do in this problem? Because as far as I know medicines are not very useful in this condition....... The only treatment that seems to work is physiotherapy and doing excercises......

Yah, they recommend Yoga but the RIGHT way to go is to get a referral from our doctor to a Physical Therapist. You don't need to go for a long time. You will get exercises custom to you!

I just found out too. I've had 11 MRI'S and a few ct scans only this last specialist saw the extra rib bones. Wow, my neck and upper back hurt everyday.

      Hi Delores,

I just found out I have two ribs. I am curious if you have had any success with allieviating your pain? I am like you, in so much pain all the time. It's unbearable.

I have 2 extra ribs and a rare B- blood and have so many questions as to why I was born like this. I suffer with neck and shoulder problems so much. I have read about "starseed" children. I know God made me this way but why the rare characteristics. Only 15% of the population has my blood type. I'm like 1 in a million or so with 2 extra ribs. Something in the genetics is strange. Anyone have exactly what I have?
