Omeprazole not working

Can anyone help? I have suspected Acid Reflux and I have been taking Omeprazole for 3 weeks, I have only noticed a very slight improvement in my condition and I'm wondering if I should stop taking them or do they take much longer to take effect. I have to say I'm not too happy taking them with all the side effects!

I am sorry about your ordeal. You NEED to see a gastroenterologist, who will perform an endoscopy. I've had three in the past five years, and it has never been a problem. My doctor uses a general anesthetic, so I take a quick, deep nap, and it's over. A general practioner cannot pinpoint the problem.  I hope you can find help soon. If you drink alcohol, stop. If you smoke, stop.  Fatty and also  spicy foods should be avoided.  Good luck.

Have you seen a gastroenterologist?  Also, please read about what causes reflux and the changes you must make in your life if you do have reflux.  It can damage your esophagus and lead to more serious problems. You may have an  H. pylori problem or a hiatal hernia. A GI person can find the cause.  For the time being, eat smaller meals, cut down on fats, do not eat before retiring to bed. Elevate your pillow when you sleep. Think about how you handle stress.  I wish you good luck with this.  I've been struggling for years.

I have the same problem as yours, I don't know if this is natural for side effects like this. I want to ask my doctor but he is a little busy. I am wondering if anyone in this forum could read this and give us some advice based on their experience.

I was on Omeprazzole 40mg per day for 4 weeks. I stopped by taking 3 days 20 mgs daily and one day a 10 mg dose.

When you lie down it gets worse, and especially if you go to bed within 3 hours of eating. I try to eat around 7 pm and go to bed well after 11 pm. This seems to help. Also drink a lot of water, as it dialutes the stomach acid. That was it. I have had heartburn, but stayed away from pills. Am eating boiled carrots, potaotes, chicken, chamomile tea and finally after 2 weeks of discomfort I can say that I am finally feeling better. Stick to the bland diet for as long as you can. A fringe benefit? I lost 11 pounds in two months! I still have "toilet" issues, some days very soft, some days normal, today I had a tiny amount of blood in my stools, but to be safe I have a meeting with a gastroenterologist in a few days. Finally Meds are destroyng and not helping us! Yesterday, I started adding a little fennel and parsley over my boiled food, because both of those are calming for stomach issues.

    Hello,

Firstly, I hope you feel better. I was advised by my cousin, (whom is a RN) to take Nexium. It's worth a try. Also, have you tried Ginger root tea, or chamomile tea? Try the real ginger, and the real chamomile flower tea. Hope you feel better.

Hello Leslie, Dsvid ( Dayglow ) here. Almost exactly the same as myself! 5 months ago went to a consultant rd lump in throat found swallowing difficult. She said it was s nasal prioblem and put small camera up my nose. Slthiugh painful pain wenf awsy as shd forced the MUCOUS down my throat. Felt great nk headaches gif about a week . She prescribed ' Avamys' steroid nasal spray and to keep taking the Omberzole !! I am still taking the nasal spray but Chemist warned me re thinking my nose membrane ( on that sprsy two years ago and my nose bleed for 8 days !). So I have not taken Omberzole since November, if anything acid reflux, which I don't think I have is much better!! May stop nasal spray too and try more natural rd afield ! I too am waiting for cameras both ways. I was quoted £3600.00 last April by a private clinic in Belfast NI . 18 month wait on the National Health Service. All the best following up oneself seems the best, ad Doctors obviously find diagnosing most health problems very very difficult, with all the so called technology ! Kind regards, David. ( hope you can read this lost another pair of glasses ! ).

Hi I have been taken omeprosal and it stopped working .My personal opinion it's another BS pill to sell to us . Before they finally suggest surgery to stop the reflux .My simple suggestions stop caffeine chocolate greasy fatty foods. Most of all do not over eat . Because it forces the acid to the top closer to your throaght

In my case, both Omeprazole and Lansoprazole are quite effective.  However, sometimes it seems to me that both of them do not work properly.  I took Lanso.. for about ten yoears and it worked very well.  But then I suffered from ulcer and the Dr prescribed Omeprazole which worked for 2 years and then it did not work as it used to work before.  I requested the Dr to change it  and give me something else.  The Dr gave me Lansoprazole which now seem not to be very good for me.  Thereforerecently I started taking Omea... as it worked for me this time.  if either of them is not working sometimes there may be some elements  which prevent  these medicines from working properly.  For example, there may be some medicines which we take may not be in tune with these medicines.  Actually they both work well and if not then we can revert to our doctors.

So please Indie, do not worry about them.  And always keep an eye on them.  I hope one of them may be working for you.

    Best of luck!

Am 77. Have GERD from faulty sphynster valve so most of life off and on Omeprazole and others. Suddenly got attacks severe so Dr put me on 40 mg daily for only 3 months as he proclaimed any further use can hurt ones liver...so after 3 months which was wonderful.not one day in pain..I took the last pull and stopped. To my dismay, approx 48 hrs later the most severe heartburn ever came without notice! After two days if severe pain I did some digging into this. Found out stopping ANY meds without gradually decreasing definitely caused what is known as "ACID REBOUND" which can be more severe than how you began taking the need for. I had to hit the pharmacy quickly and get some Omeprazole but only 20mg for a week to wean off. I am still having periodically hits of bad burn only at night in bed which I didn't have all the while on 3 months of 40 mg. Going into see my Dr soon and see if ok to get back in 40 mg daily but concerned when all I read is don't take more than 30 days or liver problem may happen. Kind of feel like I'm in a catch 22 here. Anyone else have this problem? Anyone been told it's still ok to take 40 mg longer than 3 months without problems?
