One step to far!!

I saw my consultant on wednesday for my six week check up (although it was ten days earlier than the six weeks) He was very pleased with my progress and cleared me to drive and move onto the next set of exercises and an exercise bikebiggrin Had one slightly jumpy moment when he bent my leg towards my chest ... and then leaned on iteek If he wasn't just so devinely dishy I would have yelled at him, but, I just smiled sweetly!!  So yesterday was my best day yet, drove to the beach and walked the dogs, then onto Asda and shopped without a mobility scooter, came home, and for the very first time managed to walk up the stairs properly, albeit I had help from the banister.  Went to bed without medication and got up this morning in high spirits and planned a further beach dog walk.  Then the door bell rang and as I hurried down stairs, I lost the plot, I was doing the one step hop when suddenly I saw my operated leg fly past into a normal step ... it failed spectacularly, I crumpled and went head first down the stairs across the hallway hit the front door which bounced me onto my back and flat on the floor.  I was completely stunned, my big dog came down to take a look and then went back up stairs, the little dog never bothered at all. The cat literally stepped on me and over me as it continued down the hall without a backward glance, and there I lay in a big heap.  It took me the best part of thirty minutes to get up. I had to slide to the stairs for assistance and then slowly pulled myself up.  The inside of my knee is a little sore, my neck and shoulder hurt, but other than that I seem to have escaped any injuries.  I do feel very stiff and no way could I walk up the stairs properly tonight, so it has taken me back a few paces, and made me realise my body still has quite a way to go before it catches up with my confidence.  Back to the basic exercises for a few days, and lots of stair work, I think it will be sometime before I attempt to come down stairs in a normal fashion, baby step walking is fine for now!

Wow that was an action packed stunt man type way to get down the stairs. Hope it's caused no further damage and that you don't lose confidence .

make sure ice up and rest. I think the way your pets reacted sums up the personalities of cats and dogs.

Getting support and ancouragement on this site is brilliant but we also learn from others mistakes and calamities.

treat and take care of yourself today. Well done and thank you for sharing your story

Hi Liz, just wondering how you got through the night after your "tumble"? Are you sore or bruised ( and hope not worse!)

If our pets knew what we went through for them, ha

    Hope you are OK today!!!

Hi Betty, thank you for asking, not great is the answer.  I was very shaken up on the Friday, and by Saturday the inside area of my operated knee looked like a full hamsters pouch, very swollen and tender.  My neck hurt my arms and wrists throbbed  and I felt like curling up and doing nothing.  Today, my leg is still swollen my neck is a little better but my wrist is very sore and I still feel wobbly and quite weak, it really has knocked me back.  I haven't done any excercises since the fall, I have felt too sore, but I am hoping to ease back into a routine tomorrow and also plan to go to the beach with the dog.  I spoke briefly to my consultant on saturday, and he says that I should expect to feel shaken up, but there is very little that can go wrong with the new knee it's self, but to come in if I am worried.  I am icing and taking Ibruprofen and hope it will get slowly better.  It has taught me that although I was feeling great and doing very well, the body is still quite frail from the brutal surgery! eek

Hi Liz. .. I can really sympathise with you on this one. .. I also fell and hurt my poor knee ... its very swollen...hurt my back and grazed my arm... I thought I had dislocated the knee at first as I bent my leg right under me when I went down..... reminder that we shouldn't try and hurry.... I know I will be ok but it really does knock your confidence doesn't it...? take care. .. Mary

Ouch, hope you're ok! Sounds like stairs are the order of the day.

I had a combined Tibial Tuberosity transfer, lateral release and athroscopy 4 weeks ago; then yesterday I had a complete brain fail while negotiating my way downstairs. For some reason I went down a step with my good leg first and forced my operated knee to bend at an angle it wasn't quite prepared for. I managed a silent scream and had some lovely black flashing spots in front of my eyes, but managed to sit down before I fell. On the bright side my Osteo said it was probably good as it made me realise I had more flexion in the knee than I thought; then he smashed me through an hour and a half of rehab!

Ouch, poor you, that pain when you inadvertantly use the operated leg to the maximum, is a real lightening bolt, and makes you do silly things.. in my case dive down the stairs!!
