One week post LTHR advice needed

hi all, my husband joined the hippy club last Monday 18 April. He's doing ok I think. Just walking indoors with crutches at the moment. His real problem is that when he goes to bed he has to get up every hour to hour and a half to pee. He was getting up a couple of times a night before the op, but it's much worse now. He doesn't have a uti and is fine during the day. Anyone else on here had anything similar?

It's very common. Should let up for him soon. Glad he is doing so well!

Always happens for the first twpo or three weeks then subsides. Juat a normal part of recovery xx

Very usual, I am afraid. Personally, I think it is the body flushing through all the swelling and what not. A bit like water retention.

    Hi Ser

Welcome to the forum. I'm also the wife of a hippy (mine had his March 18 so is a month ahead). Has your husband thought of using a urinal? They can save a lot of getting in and out of bed and they are inexpensive.

Hope he continues to do well

Yes he does have one but not very comfortable using it - prefers the loo, even though it's an effort to get in and out of bed. Have your husband's symptoms got any better over the 4 weeks?

All that effort getting in and out of bed is probably doing him good in some ways, moving all those muscles that have been wrenched around to do the surgery.

And yes peeing like a horse is normal, don't know if its the tablets they give you, or just your body reacting to the nasty knocking around it has just been subjected too.

When you are ready, in some months time there is a youtube video of hip replacement surgery, too much of a shock to watch just now, but you doo realise just how brutal the surgery is, very hard to watch in one go, I coudn't.

Yes, definitely. He will be 6 weeks post op this Friday and is doing better in every way. Sleep was challenging at first but he now sleeps well, just getting up once to the bathroom (like before the op) and is independent in doing all the self care things. He is walking without any walking aid, we are taking long walks (as much as 5 miles) and is doing out patient PT. He's been working part time from home this week and is planning to go back to work (an office job) next week. The recovery has been impressive so far with only a couple of minor blips (like an episode of knee pain that put him back onto his cane for a day or two). There's still a road ahead but the first couple of weeks are the toughest and we are glad to be past them.

Sounds like your husband is doing well. Wishing him a great recovery

Many thanks to all who replied. My husband is much reassured by your comments. I'm sure I'll be back with more questions as he progresses on his journeyconfused

I was also very bad the first two weeks after my op. Started thinking they made my bladder smaller! 🤕 It's better now 7 weeks out.

Hi very common problem in the early weeks. Mine got better after about 2 weeks. Thinks it's a way of making sure you get up and about so don't get too stiff. Hope it settles down soon.

Hi Ser55. After reading your message, then reading the replies, I felt reassured myself, as I've had real problems.  I had to have a catheter fitted because I couldn't 'go'.  I really wanted to but hardly anything was happening!

Anyway, after the catheter was taken out (about 36 hours) I nearly had accidents trying to get off the hospital bed, getting my crutches and then hobbling to the toilet - disaster when the toilet was occupied so I had to find another toilet.  Oh, the stress and near accidents!!

Anyway, I thank God for the commode in my bedroom.  I never ever thought I would use one, but I got converted for the short term because it meant I hadn't got the trek to the bathroom as I was needing to go so much - sometimes it could be every 15/20 minutes, then the times inbetween got longer and longer.  Because we have had major surgery, things get shifted about a bit I suppose and I never thought my bladder would be right ever again, BUT, things are getting better and better by the day.  This last couple of days I have noticed things have improved dramatically - I'm so pleased and things feel more normal now.  Please tell your husband things will right themselves and he will be fine.

    God bless,  Pammyw.  xx

Pammy, your experience sounds awful! After my catheter was removed they would bring a commode next to my bed whenever I needed to use it because I couldn't get to the bathroom yet, even using a walker. And I had a private room and no one else using the bathroom. You shouldn't have had to be put through that kind of stress! Especially when you were having to go that frequently. Glad you are better now!

Pammy, oh yes, how right you are.  I was 'going' every hour at the start, and thought I had prostate problems, but it was just the result of this operation.  I told my GP about it, and he was surprised by it, so the medical profession just don't seem to know about it.
