One week using "Wet Ones" with Benzethonium Chloride

Posted , 128 users are following.

I have been using Wet Ones as recommended by Lynda79 (Clean eyes 4 times daily using 1/4 wet one) for one week

I can report the following.

Initial State:- Eye irritation/soreness/dryness including corneal ulcers, etc which I have had for over 2 months continually. Requiring washing approx 3-4 times daily with warm water, baby shampoo, eye drops etc..

When starting with the Wet Ones, I initially felt slight stinging around the rim of the eye, but this stopped after 24 hrs use.

After 3 days:- A lot of relief, maybe rinse eyes with just warm water if they felt dry.

After 7 days:- I have forgotten that I have blephoritus. Have to remind myself to clean eyes with Wet Ones.

I will continue to use the wet ones, now cutting down to 3x daily as recommended by Lynda79, and will update again next week. Hope this helps somebody, and many thanks to Lynda79 for sharing this.

    Dear Eric,

I have found out that anyone who is allergic to some shampoos, detergents, fabric softners or fabric sheets should not try this as could be allergic to the ammonium salts or compounds that these wipes are made from. This would include Methylbenzethonium Chloride (Patent medicine), Benzethonium Chloride (Wet Ones I used and in Avon Facial Scrub), Benzalkonium Chloride (that is what is in the handwipe that Honjon used).

You could ask your Dr. if there is a medicine that kills at the cell level that could be applied at the eyelash area or the gland openings.

It is possible too that you could be allergic to lanolin, my Mom was allergic to that. But it is more likely it is the ammonium salts or compounds.

Let me know what you find out from your Dr.

During the day they are now getting very crusty........very hard scabs around them ....cant

think of any other way to describe them.....anyone had this problem?

Thank goodness I have a hospital appointment on Wed {Its Sun now}....I might get some

    Dear Eileen,

So sorry to hear about your problems. My husband had a hip replacement and is doing good. It was rough for 6 weeks. Sorry to hear about that bone too. Can't even imagine that.

Just wanted you to know that I go to a rest home and see someone who is really old and she has this yellow gunk on her eyelashes. I finally used a wipe on her lashes as water did nothing. It melted away with the wipes.

My friend who used the Avon Facial Scrub had suff like yours too.

Hope this info helps you and hope each day is better for you in all things. I think we are in the same age group. They say this is the Golden years. They mixed it up with the dark ages. Golden was back then.

Hope to hear you are doing better. Watch only funny things on T. V. Laugh a lot as hleps to recover.

    Will be thinking of you,

Lynda79, my wet nes are 0.115% benzalkonium chloride.  Is this too strong, too weak?  thanks,  smile  Dena

      Dear Dena,

I used the wipes that are .3% Benzethonium Chloride and it took 3 months to kill it.0

That amount is about 1/3 of that and it is Benzalkonium Chloride. Now Honjon used Benzalkonium Chloride wipes. I can only vouch for the ones I used. Most have no problem with them unless they are allergic.

      Hope this helps,

Some have used wipes from the UK but I am not sure what the different amounts of the Quats that are in them.

I just can tell you what I used and it did the trick. They were US Wet Ones.

      Hope this helps,

      Dear Dena,

The Wet Ones I used were .3% Benzethonium Chloride. The Benzalkonium Chloride you mentioned is just under a 1/3 of that amount and is a different Quat.

Using the .3% took me over 3 months to kill it so anything less may not work or take a lot longer to work. I am not sure. Perhaps others have used this and can tell you.

You can buy the .3% Benzethonium Chloride one online.

      Hope this helps,

      Hello Linda,

I have been suffering from blepharitis for 8 months now. I just starded to use the Wet Ones 2 days ago ,my eyes sems to be feeling better. I do have a question  ; do I need to rinse the eyes with warm water  after using the Wet Ones?

Thank you so much for your posts and for taking the time to look over my email.

      Dear Sal,

I did not rinse my eyes. Some have said it is drying so the info I found said that it takes 10 minutes for the Quats to work. That is what Benzethonium Chloride is called. The eyes can be washed off after 10 minutes. If you get it in your eyes rinse with water or your eye drops for dry eye.

      Hope this helps,

    Hi Lynda

Thanks for your post.....yes....Golden Yearsnot exactly applicable LOL

You need to be brave to go old.!!!

As for my hip replacement.....not doing too badly......I'm one of those people even though

not very mobile cannot stay in the house.

I'm an arthritis care volunteer.......I am on various committees at church......go out for coffee

frequently so this hip replacement hit me hard.

I've already had one and it was OK.......this one has been awful but I have a mobility scooter which was in the back of the garage....never used so that came out so even though I had a tHR and a fracture I didn't stay in.....Hubby put it in the back of the car would drop me somewhere and off I would scoot {crutches on the back of it LOL} so I'm lucky in that respect.

Just finished the awful 6 weeks so am concentrating on on the fracture now and a pulled muscle I my side from last Fri where I had to go for a scan and they shoved and pushed me

    around a lot.

    Sorry......gone off topic

    That sounds optimistic about your old lady {every one is old to me even though I'm 67 LOL}

I'll keep trying it.....they are very red/black under the eyes as well.....always did have dark

shadows under my eyes and used concealer but they are worse now and a reddish colour now. I need reading glasses but not distances glasses but I'm using ones with pain glass in them as a sort of disguise !!!

I'm an Avon rep and must look closer but cant see anything in the brochure {UK} with those ingredients.

I'll keep trying and then come Wed......will go to the hospital.....{Its only Mon 7.40am here} and see what he says.

    Thanks again

    Hi Lynda,

Thanks for all your good help. I ended up finding a product from Boots called Blephasol which helped massively. It reduced the symptoms right down and I actually forget now that I have it. Though I noticed the symptoms start to appear after I stare at the computer screen for too long. I have a theory that it's my excessive amount of time I spend on the computer that might have given me Blepharitis, as my eyes get dry and sore after too much time and that's when it flare's up.

Does this happen to you at all?

Also my house has a bad condensation, which apparently is a breeding ground for mould and bacteria. And within the first week of moving is when I started getting Blepharitis, I had never even heard of it before. Just wondered if you or anyone reading as had an similar experience with this?

Also what was your friends routine in using the avon scrub, did she just wash her eyes with it morning and night?

    Sorry for all the questions!

    Thanks

    Dear acet,

Honjon had the same problem with the TV and computer as you do. He said he does not have it any longer.

I googled that medicine and it can help the symptoms but does not kill it. It is bacterial. That is why the Wet Ones worked. The Avon Facial Scrub was an antibacterial one.

They do not make that facial scrub with Benzethonium Chloride in it any longer. Honjon used another hand wipe that had Benzalkonium Chloride in them. They worked to kill it too. These are ammonium salts or compounds and they have an antimicrobial effect. It kills the bacteria.

Please read all his posts as sounds a lot like your problems. He went down really fast in the amount of times he did it each day and he is doing good.

    Hope this helps you.
