One week using "Wet Ones" with Benzethonium Chloride

Posted , 128 users are following.

I have been using Wet Ones as recommended by Lynda79 (Clean eyes 4 times daily using 1/4 wet one) for one week

I can report the following.

Initial State:- Eye irritation/soreness/dryness including corneal ulcers, etc which I have had for over 2 months continually. Requiring washing approx 3-4 times daily with warm water, baby shampoo, eye drops etc..

When starting with the Wet Ones, I initially felt slight stinging around the rim of the eye, but this stopped after 24 hrs use.

After 3 days:- A lot of relief, maybe rinse eyes with just warm water if they felt dry.

After 7 days:- I have forgotten that I have blephoritus. Have to remind myself to clean eyes with Wet Ones.

I will continue to use the wet ones, now cutting down to 3x daily as recommended by Lynda79, and will update again next week. Hope this helps somebody, and many thanks to Lynda79 for sharing this.

    Hi Lynda

I have been following the various suggestions regarding treatment for Blephlaritis as I suffer with it.

I have tried to find a source for wipes which contain Benzothorium Chloride. Neither the chemists in Majorca or the Uk have been able to help. I did read one article which stated one should not let B C near eyes. Maybe it was due to the concentration strength. I would dearly wish to try the wipes as they appear to have been successful.

    Dar James,

On one of the sites someone posted a patent it was 1966 Patient US 3236730. I looked it up and copied it.

They used ammonium salts or compounds back then in the eye. The dose was smaller but it went in the eye.

I looked up the International Journal of Toxicology on the Safety Assessment of Benzethonium Chloride and Methylbenzethonium Chloride. This is the last two sentences.

"In clinical studies, Benzthonium Chloride produced mild sin irritatioin at 5 per cent but not at lower concentratioin. Neither ingredient is considered to be a sensitizer.

It is concluded that bothcompounds are safe at concentrations of 0.05 per cent in cosmetics applied to the skin. A maximum concentration of 0.02 per cent is safe for csmetics used in the eye area."

The wipes are 0.03 per cent. The patent's medicine went in the eye. The problem is on the outside of the eye and the eyelashes.

Now for people who are allergic to detergents, hand wipes, shampoo and fabric softners or sheets should not use these. That is about 16.5 per cent of every 959 people. There is also lanolin in the wipes and some people are allergic to that.

My friend used a facial scrub and it worked (no longer made with Benzethonium Chloride). I was desperate and found something else with it in it. My brother just came over and he said he used it for his crusty stuff on his eye (I told his wife about it) and it worked for him. I use it on someone in a rest home to keep the yellow gunk under control. I only use it 2 times a week and it is doing the job.

There is going to be an antibiotic that will work. It will take years to get it, I am sure.

The problem I see is that where the medicine is put. If the medicine in the 166 Patent was used on the eye lashes and rim of the eye it would have been really successful. That is the one thing my friend and I can say we have discovered as the products Benzethonium Chloride, Benzalkonium Chloride and Methylbenzethonium have been used for eye problems now and in the past, is just where you put the medicine.

Honjon used a different wipe and he had success with it too. That had Benzalkonium Chloride in it.

Try the wipes on your hands and a small place on your face and see if you are O. K. I didn't do it but it is the wise thing to do now that I know a percentage of people can be allergic.

    Hope this information helps you.

    Thinking of you,

    Lynda79

    Hi Lynda

Thanks for your report on the use of benzothorium chloride and am assured it is safe to use the wipes.

Can you advise me were I can purchase wipes with BC in them as I have been unsuccessful so far. I am very keen to use them.

    Thanks

    Dear James and everyone,

You have to look on line. The hand wipes in the UK have Benzalkonium Chloride and Honjon used those and he is having success.

Most eye meds have Benzalkonium Chloride in them as a perservative. It has been shown to be not good and can be dangerous if used on a permanent basis. That is why it needs to be done topicallyand fast.

It is in the detergent family and is an antimicrobial agent.

This something to kill it in a few months and move on. Don't use this forever. I do not have it any longer.

There is an antibiotic that can kill it if put on the lashes too. If it is put in the eye it can go on the lashes.

If you get it in your eye, simply use your eye drops (water ones) to rinse the eye. I tore each strip into 8 sections so that I used only a small amount on my fingertip. That way you have better access to the area and not all over your eyelids.

Please google all the information and see for yourself. It does have lanolin in it and some are alergic to that too.

Check on-line for where to get them.

Please let me know how you are doing and if you need any more information. I'll share what I found.

    Wish you relief soon.

I just would like to reiterate that these Wet Ones (red package in US with Benzethonium Chloride) have been the answer to my blepharitis condition.

I have suffered from Blepharitis for over 20 years (I am 45 now and was diagnosed in 20's in college). I have been to a multitude of eye doctors, allergist, and dermatologist with little relief.

Most of these physicians recommend baby shampoo eye scrubs and a tobradex steroid eye cream (like petroleum jelly - vaseline consistency). These items offered only slight relief.

I would do an internet search on blepharitis occasionally i the hopes that someone would have something new to suggest. When I stumbled upon the Wet Ones post I was very skeptical but figure I had nothing to lose by trying it.

I still am amazed that this has been the thing that has offered me relief. Just today a friend told me what amazing eye lashes I have. My lashes have finally grown all back in and my eyes look and feel great. My last eye doctor said that my eye lash loss was probably permanent due to the length of time that I have suffered from this ailment. So glad she was WRONG!

I pray that this simple solution can be the answer for others. I says prayers of thanks for Lynda and her campaign to spread the news about this option. God Bless!

I've been following this discussion for about a month and using the Wet Ones for that long as well. I was very interested in knowing when to stop using the Wet Ones - and saw in a previous post by Lynda79 that you don't have to use them forever. What are the criteria for stopping?

My symptoms were under control by the time I started using the Wet Ones. I have been using a hot compress (microwaveable) every morning, plus running my finger along the upper and lower eyelids to express anything collected there, then washing my eyes off with baby shampoo. I used SteriLid for a while, but when I ran out I switched to the baby shampoo and things didn't get worse.

I had also been prescribed Erythromycin and a steroid cream, neither of which helped by themselves. I was using an eye moisturizer on my eyelids and under my eyes to address the dry, itchy skin there, but interestingly enough it was when I STOPPED that moisturizer that things finally began to clear up. So my suggestion to anyone still having issues is to "go back to basics" with the heat, expression, and cleansing, with the addition of the Wet Ones if you are not allergic to any of the ingredients.

Anyway - I plan to continue for at least another month with the Wet Ones, and also to keep up with the heat/cleansing routine every morning.

Really appreciate all the good information in this discussion!

      Dear Nancy,

I thought blepharitis is either caused by bacteria or disfunction of the glands.I am treating my condition as it was bacterial without heat, expression etc...I also noticed that cold water helps me more when its itching terribly..

But your post intrigued me when you said that things started to get better when you stop using creams.Somebody else mentioned it on the forum. It suppresed the skin in a way.I hope you get what I mean

I have a feeling it is sometimes like that with me too. Unfortunately I have to feed that dry area and apply something on it....maybe I should try warm compresses too..Never done that and had eye problems for years...

Any ideas? How to know that  is maybe combination of two causes?

Btw, I started using wet ones 3 days ago...

      Hi Jenny

I was treating mine with heat but recently they got so itchy that the heat only made them worse. So I've stopped using that. Morning was hot faceclothes and the evening it was a microwaveable bag.

I couldnt leave my eyes without anything....they are so dry on the eyelids and underneath the bottom eyelashes. I do have a cream {over the counter} that was advised by a lad in Boots chemist .......The other thing I use is Simple cream, just an eye moisturiser and it doesnt sting whereas some of the others I've tried sting.  I've just started using wet ones as well. So heres hoping that works for me as well as for others. I did try it quite a while ago when I read Lindas post but my eyelids got very inflammed so I stopped.....but for the past couple of days I've been using it and my eyelids aren't getting inflammed.biggrin

Thanks for writing back so fast.

I have been using bepanthen ointment for years because I wanted something which is not a drug and can be used close/inside the eyes although i have never put it inside. You can check the ingredients online. It gives you the fast relief but possibly block the pores.Maybe it should be used after heat and cleaning....

Now i apply Dr Organics manuka honey rescue cream and it doesnt sting or irritate at all as it is completely natural and hypoallergenic.

When it comes to allergies, have you ever done any tests? I did many.Ironically I was hoping they find something so I can stick to something...They havent found anything apart from nickel+++.It belongs to contact alergens and for many years I thought that was the reason of my constant infections.I was misdiagnosed so many times. Now I am really determined to move forward..I have come to conclusion that nickel is not a problem and explaining it here its not really relevant and it would take long..

Internet is great thing and we can help each other by exchanging our experiences...

You wont believe it.A few years ago my friend gave me an eye bag which she got from someone and never used. Its been sitting in my wardrobe for years until tonight.I microwaved it and it felt good.I massaged my lids afterwards.I was a bit scared of the fact that it could be old but I was so impatient and curious.Since nobody ever checked my glands or consider that as an option, it seems I have to apply the therapy in order to see does it work.the other way around..I live in the small town in the southern Europe so dont believe these bags can be found in local chemists. Will order online if it shows good results..

I almost forgot. If your eyes react to some ingredients in the wet ones, maybe you should see what it could be.Lanolin??

My eyes also turn red slightly when i clean them with tissues but they dont feel inflamed.Thats why Iam willing to continue with this.Slightly irritated from outside but calmer from inside...After few hours the redness calm down and then I wash my eyes with water and apply some cream...

Not putting the make up is a story for it self....Maybe next time..

Thank you again. It is great to have people you can talk to.

      regards from Croatia

      Hi Jenny

Its 7.25am here.....Gopt to go for a physio appointment early  ugghhh!!! Thats another story  smile

I was looking at expensive creams in this chemist store Blepharous and anything that began with bleph.....cheesygrin  I was desperate. A young lad came up and looked at my eyes, and said before you bu that I have a cream, you can buy {over the counter} I've sold loads of it and it seems to help people. That and hypermellrose eye drops {spelling?}  Well after talking to hime I got a small tube of the ointment.....can go in your eyes but he was suggesting on the outside {lids} as for the drops I have them on repeat prescription but had stopped using them......was trying everything else.  Anyway, this cream has really helped the inflammation and the itchyness ...Before that I was using the bag on my eyes and it was working....I had to buy it online as well. Then massaging them after I took it off and then the wash. When they got so itcy the heat irratated them so I stopped that.

I know I'm being cheeky but how much is the manuka honey????? Very expensive I imagineeek

I wouldnt know how to go about doing tests for allergies and over here the NHS dont offer them

The internet is great isnt it.

I dont think it will do any harm the fact that the bag is old.......it lasts about 200 times {as far as I know} and the only thing is that as it gets used more it doesnt heat up as well...I'm on my 2nd one.....but like I say I've stopped temporarily because of the itch.

      I almost forgot.....some people can be allergic to tissues {I think its te bleach in them??}

      I've bought some mens cotton hankies and use them for my eyes {not for anything else.... I always use tissues cheesygrin}

As for make up!!!!!! This has been going on for 3 years now and in that time I havent had any eye make up on!!!!cry

I dont wear much mascara {could do without} no eyeliner usually but I miss my creams and my eyeshadows????? Any advice on that??

By the way I'm in the North East of England

      Hi

It is 11 o'clock here.We are just an hour difference...

I am sorry you are going through other health issues. Is it a hip replacement, I think i read your previous posts...What to say..keep your spirit up !

Regarding Dr Organics cream, I googled for you.You can find it in Holland&Barret and the price is 8,89 pds for 50 ml.It can last for long...I read about manuka honey from Australia and it has great healing properties...There are so many product out there....I was also looking at Skin salvation range of products which is specifically arranged for excema and damaged skin...I think I found it in Chemist direct which I found the cheapest taking everything in consideration.I have to look into shipping fees as I dont live in UK.I do buy lots of things online especially from UK...

When i was misdiagnosed with nickel dermatitis i had to look for nickel free cosmetics and I found it in EYE CARE cosmetics.../ I am allergic to this metal but it is not what is triggering my eye condition - I believe/Maybe you can have a look on their website and found some eyeshadows which are hypoallergenic.I personally prefer a bit of mascara and eye pencil.

Last night i was reading a good article about blepharitis.I cant leave links here...Instead of buying an eye bag which is not cheap they gave an option of: " Alternatively try using a rice sock – simply fill a sock with rice, tie a knot in the end and then heat it up in the microwave. This can also help to remove blockages and can work well in combination with massage."...Commercial stuff are easier to use but this can save some money???

Also the doctor on the site says that people usually have anterior and posterior bleph together so MBD plus bacteria. So far, I belived that mine was predominantly bacterial but I am not sure any more because I repeated the application of the bag this morning and it helps!! We have to keep trying, thats it..there is a cure or at least there are ways to keep it under control!! The thing is everybody has to find his magic combination.

As soon as i get paid, I will be introducing 2 things in my treatment and there are: Omega 3 supplement and eye drops.Yes,

I will google your suggestion for eye drops. Thanks, I appreciate it.Could you please write me the exact name of the ointment, suggested by yound lad in the chemist...Usually I  research everything and then decide what to buy...

You were right..the bag was fine even though it was sitting in my wardrobe for couple years at least...

Hope everything went well in the hospital and you are enjoying a cup of tea right now..

      Bye for now,

      Jenny

      Hi Jenny

Yes I had my 2nd hip replacement 13 weeks ago.....should have been sorted by now {usually 6 weeks} but 4weeks into the recovery I was doing an NHS exercise and CRACKKK what a noise and my leg gave way. They took me into hospital, said I had fractured the greater trochantor bone {beside the replacement} nothing they could do it would heal itself but would take a "long long time" whateve that is????Its now 9 and a half weeks since the fracture and I'm still on 2crutches..1 around the house..if i try to walk without any {inside} I dip down to the side very badly and can only do a few steps and am not steady....Its this NOT KNOWING thats getting me.

Anyway. Thats not as bad as I thought for the manuka honey. I've read about it as well...not necessarily for blepharitis

Right I have been making notes of things you have said and will check them later today......Been to one hospital for physio and soon to leave for a different hospital for a DEXA scan {osteporosis} The last three appointments have been cancelled because the machine has been broken.....today...4th appointment I've rung them and at time of ringing it was still OK  LOL

So links will have to wait until tonight.

      Looking forward to researching them

The ointment I got was from Boots chemist. and is callet boots lubricating eye ointment, can be used as often as needed. I think i said it could go in the eye but he said try it on the outside as well. It cost £3...he said give it a try and then you can try the more expensive ones if it doesnt work.....sensible!!!!

My eyes are starting to itch now {lids} so I'll go and wash them. I tried a different cream this morning {avon beauty one} then put a little bit of eyeshadow on......this is the result.

The other thing is my eyes are getting very wrinkled.....oK I'm not a youngster but they were never like this before....its the rubbing thats caused it.....mostly the top lid...its drooping...dont know how else to explain it.

      Thats just pride I suppose

      Hear you later

Oh poor thing...You have been through hell and it is not over yet...I know it sounds familiar and "easy to say" but keeping positive and not letting stress get to you is very important.Look around you.Enjoy your kids, your husband,, neighbour, a cat or good movie.I am sure there is something to look forward in the future. So think about that.Think about you going on small trip somewhere or just enjoying the small things which you can't do now.I know you appreciate them more than people who are fit and healthy...

There are 2 few reasons why I was looking at creams targeting excema: most of them are natural because excema sufferers are prone to allergens/irritants. Also when i have bad flare-up , the skin around my eyes is inflamed so it can be clasified as an eye excema...So I need good cream for that dry, wrinkled, excema look-alike skin...They should have anti-inflamatory effect.

I came accros Boots and their products.Unfortunately they dont deliver to Croatia. How lucky you are being able to go down the street and get stuff. I have lots of british friends who live in my town and they travel

often so I will write down the list when they go.One of my best friend is from north of England too, from Leeds.

I recently ordered blephasol and it is ok.I found some omega  3 capsules /Bioconcept/ in Chemist direct for only 3 pounds so I will probably purchase it.They have lots of reduced items so compensate for the shipping..

Update from wet ones; even though i am just in my first week of using it, I cut them to twice a day.Lynda suggested me and I agreed. First, the symptoms are very mild now and second I work so it is not very clever to do it as you might come out red from the toilet..frown

Also tonight I will do the eye bag again.... Somehow my eyes look brighter and less tired..unblocked..maybe I just imagine???..We shall see...If it works, it is worth buying that commercial bag every 2-3 months.I found them for 14 pounds online...I would rather give up something else and have my eyes back again...I would give up much more...

I understand your frustration with wrinkles..It is ok to have some as we are not 18 any more but to look older than you actually are is so disappointing...Of course it is rubbing that caused it...and dryness too.My husband used to grab me to my hands to prevent me from scrathing it..The bad was shaking!!! But not from things one can think of...redface

First we have to put out the fire / get clear eyes/ and then focus on feeding that dry, tired skin....

If I get jack pot, I will treat you with face lift!biggrin

Regards from cloudy Dubrovnik, but still one of the most beautiful cities in the Med.

      xx

      Hi Jenny

Thanks for the very positive message...I need that sometimes.....or a cyber kick up the bum  LOL

Thata a pity about Boots not delivering.....but its fairly ordinary cream....if you go into a biggish chemist or online you might find something similar.

I'm so plesed that the wet ones are working for you.....I did read a post by someone else ....Must try and find it....that some other avon stuff had that  ingredient in it......I think it was some sort of pore cleansing stuff....I'll try and find the  post again and check.

Thanks for the offer of a face lift  biggrinbiggrin

Mione arent red now to the same extent as they were. Either the lids or the eyes themselves but the itchyness is the problem and try keeping your hands away from them when they are itchy

Well I went for my other scan this afternoon and it was working!!! Thank goodness.

It will be  6 weeks before I get the results, but my GP assumes that I have osteoporosis, so does the ortopaedic consultant....so I dont think I'll get any great surprises.wink

By the way...I know where you live now but are from there originally?

You can always pm me if you want to.

Right got loads of things to look up tonight including the post that someone else put in about some avon product.

Thanks again for your positive comments....you are so right.

      Love

      Eileen

If my eyes aren't itchy tonight I might try the eye bag tonight....havent used it for a few nights.

      Hi

Its not an eye cream but it can be used around eyes.I was reading excellent blog of the girl who cured her eye excema with this cream so I decided to give it try since it has only natural antiinflammatory ingredients and they have real names on the package not the ones understandble to pharmacists only. There are really many creams out there but this one was good value for money and I found it in the place I live...Your cream from Boots and the one I used before /Bepanthen/ are similar , are both vaseline based. It is good and cheap  but nothing extra healing only moisturising.I also read somewhere that vaseline block pores and lots of people think it is cancerogus because it is a petrol derivate .I wouldnt go that far...What about jelly candies, processed food, what about perfect looking tomatoes in January??

I would also personally look into dermatological brands such as La roche Posay, Avene, etc because they are made for sensitive and reaction-prone skin..They have stuff exclusively for eyes...

      Take your time with desicion.

Later in the day I will try to reply to yourpm-s

I've been browsing the other sites you gave me last night....not far enough on with the bleph to thank about eye shadow yet but have put it in my favourites

It may not be miracolous cream but should not aggrevate condition.Hopefully you wont regret it!

Eye care cosmetics are a bit expensive. They are not only nickel free, but also paraben, parfume etc free...

.If you dont have any known allergies maybe you can stick to "ordinary" cosmetics. Good hygene in which I haven't been good so far is more important than anything else...We have to thorougly clean our eyes after make up otherwiseeek It takes justa little bit to trigger that stupid itch!

I threw away most of my make up few days ago and I am thinking of getting a new mascara.Tomorrow is my birthdayneutral and would love to look nice. How can you dress up without some on your face?? I will have a party on Saturday afternoon with my friends../3 of them from uk, Manchester and Leeds!!!/ I thought of rather buying a chepaer one and changing it more often then buying an expensive one. I dont use it so often and whats the point? I followed lynda's advice and ordered disposable mascara wand online / 100 pieces only 4 dollars/

So I will use my new one just on Sat and then I will cut used brushes and use my disposable ones when they arrive.

Are we slowly getting somewhere..I hope we are,..

      bye for now

      Hi Jenny

I wont regret buying the cream./.......I've looked at that make in Holland and Barratt a few times but just never got round to buying it...nothing to do with my eyes.....just sounded so nice {and things i've read about it as well} So even if it doesnt do anything for the eyes it'll be good for my face LOL

I've tried ordinarary cosmetics.....well eyeshadow and a primer underneath and I've also tried a concealer under my eyes but they just started watering later in the day and the lids stinging a bit.

I've got no make up to worry about cleansing....well not eye make up at the moment

      My eye hygiene is good {since all this started}

Happy birthday!!!! Hope you have a lovely day when you celebrate. Of course you have to have someeye make upon to dress up......even if you do suffer a bit for it afterwards LOL

Sounds seensible buying cheaper and  more often

I hope you are getting somewhere....I think I am but not at the stage where I can put eye shadow on yetsad

      Never mind.....it'll come....its almost 10.30pm here and I've just come in....church meeting.

      Hear you again
