One year on and time to celebrate

Posted , 11 users are following.

Exactly one year ago today my new life began....  within 2 weeks I was walking , 3 weeks achieved my first mile and 4 weeks walking 3 miles a day.  I now walk anything up to 10 miles a day, can play on climbing frames with my grand child . swings and roundabouts are a doddle.  2 weddings and wearing high heels , I have travelled by trains, boats and planes..

You may be thinking well she is very young and very lucky.. Nope I am 64 this year and my complex surgery took over 4 hours, however with the determination of steel and with my family encouraging me to get fit I consider I have done it..

Tonight I will celebrate with my family and raise a glass to the amazing medical team, my never ending supportive family, and to me for grinning and bearing the difficult times to get to where I am today which is fitter than ever, jogging ( gently) walking a marathon each week and never ever giving in....  Good luck and my best wishes to you all for support xx

    That is fantastic!!!

I'm just under 4 weeks post op, and no where near your level of progress. I'm walking, but with a crutch and tire very quickly. I'm pushing on, despite still being in a bit of a pain.

You are an inspiration, so thank you for documenting it! Enjoy your much deserved celebration this evening!

    Best,

    Caron

Thank you for your lovley words, my advice is move at the speed that feels really achievable for you.   I practised standing straight for mnutes at a time without holding a stick.  once you feel totally in control of that and not before take steps ..  please remember we are all different so dont feel you have to do anything other than what suits you,, my best wishes and good luck with your progress xx

Congratulations Pollye!!  It's so nice to hear positive stories like yours.  I had my hip replaced last July and I've done amazingly well also.  No longer in pain and for the most part back to my normal self.

I do have a question for you though:  Have you continued to work out or continued strengthening exercises?  I did physical therapy for about 8 weeks.  By week 10 post op I could do just about everything without pain, including squating and getting back up again.  I'm now almost 9 months post op.  I haven't continued strengthening since I 'graduated' from PT.  Several months on I have problems with weakness in my hip when I bend down.  I love gardening, so it's really important that I get this strength back.  Will I have to continue to strengthening exercises for the rest of my life?  If I don't, will I continue to get weak again?  I have a busy lifestyle, and don't have a whole lot of time for the gym.  I'm willing to do what I have to if needed.  I'm 50 years old, so still fairly young.

I appreciate any feedback you can providesmile

      Hi ..

      Thank you for.yourequire lovely words.

In answer to your question. I do the following daily. Using a kitchen work top height or bottom of bed (if headboard and base)

Stand with your hands on the work top/bed and move your feet as far away as. Possible (similar to a plank position)

Now keeping your leGSM straight and your tummy tight ..raise your shoulders up and thrn direct then down to meet the surface of bed or based unit. It is similar to press up without the floor.. do this 20 times twice daily. It takes about a minute or two but this strengthen your core your waist and upper thigh.. xx

      Hi Polley,

That sounds so simple.  With all the gyms available and technology I forgot about all the simple things that we can do while we continue with our every day routines.  If I do them every time I'm in the kitchen, either cooking for the family or cleaning, I'll be back in shape in no time!

I can't thank you enough!!  You are the bestsmile

Thank you, this is just the post I need to read right now.

I haven't had my hip replaced or even advised my consultant I wish to be put on the waiting list yet (appointment 23.5.17) and although I know I need to I'm still worried about the long road to recovery because at present I can still walk 5-10km a day with my dog and swim 50 lengths of the pool. Albeit with a very aching hip afterwards. But I know there are lots of other little things I now struggle to do and this has got considerably worse over the last year.

So reading a post like yours is inspirational and I thank you for sharing. So thrilled for you that everything has progressed so well and long may it continue.

      Hi.

I Juse wanted to say goodbye Renee.. I found the forum useful and I appreciated the lovely support.. I have spent the year working hard to get myself back to beinget really fit and pride myself on the fact I don't even have a limp which is fantastic.. The recovery is never easy I understand that but I needed to stay absolutely focused so that I could do what I felt was right for me .. I am so very happy and am loving everyday .. my love to you for the future xx

    Hi polly

im so pleased to hear how well you are doing.  You are one lucky person, especially to be able to dress up and wear heels. I am just 15 months p.o. and I'm not as lucky as you. I'm 70 years old and have suffered with damaged nerves in my foot since the op.  Because of this I can't wear heels and I'm only 4' 10" tall and don't feel dressed up when I go out without heels. I don't use walking aids but it takes me a long time to walk anywhere. My hip doesn't hurt and my new physio has told me it could take 2 years so that is my next goal. Like you I have tried to be positive and keep going and try various things.

I hope you have a lovely night you deserve it and thank you for your words of encouragement.

All the best for the future Brenda C
