Only 20 and I'm Waiting for total hip replacement- Need advice please?

Posted , 9 users are following.

Hello, I'm Lauren and I'm 20 years old I was born with Left DDH and I have had 10 operations to try and fix this but nothing has worked, I am currently waiting to have my total hip replacement on the 4th September 2014 and I cannot wait! Unfortunately I have not managed to get in contact with anyone that is around my age that has had to have a hip replacement or have similar operations? I have heard THR is great for older people but I have not spoken to anyone under the ages of 40 that has had to have one, I'm excited but very scared at the same time! Can anyone give me some information on what it is like after the total hip replacement? Thank you x

    Hi Lauren,

I'm 26 years old and I just had THR , I won't lie it was scary for me too.

Im 8weeks post operation, and doing well, daily exercise ,walks, physio.Im even planning to come back to my work. When my surgeon told me I needed hip replacement, I was shocked and very much scared,...But my doctor explained all the plusses and minuses. And I thought I rather live without pain for next 20 years and maybe have a hip revision when im 45-50 or even later perhaps, then suffer as I did ( dailynon stop pain for last 4 years) I took tramadol 8 or more pills a day ,nothing else would help. They wanted to prescribe a morphine patches but im allergic to it,so I have stick to tramadol ,which gave me terrible mood swings , I become angry, I couldn't go sleep without taking them I couldn't eat I lost 12 kg , i was feeling tired and sleepy , I become depressed. I've hip arthroscopy and injections of steroid to kill the pain , nothing helped...

Im 8 weeks post op and no hip pain what so ever, I have some odd pain here and there but its muscle pain after operation. Don't get me wrong first few weeks aren't best days of my life ir easiest, but you'll get through it, we all did. So honestly take all the strength you got and go for it !

    All the best

      Hi Karoline,

I am happy to hear this as you are only 6 years older then me so I am happy it has worked out for you, being in pain is one of the worst things as it is every day you are in discomfort, your story is so simular to mine! I am on 8 tramadol a day with tablets that have morphine in as well as anti inflammatory and they only take the edge off, i cannot sleep without taking the tramadol and i know I am addicted to them as I have been on them for 3 years and I struggle without them. ( when i say addicted i mean i have to take them around the same time every day otherwise i am in agonising pain and it gives me sweats and i cant concerntrate, its horrible as it makes me feel like an addict yet its the only thing that takes away the pain enough for me to walk around my house and drive ect, thank you very much for the positive reply this has made me feel much better about having the operation, i was suppose to be having it on the 4th September but unfortunately they have pushed it back another 6 weeks! I am currently walking with a dislocated hip as wel as my bones grinding together as I do not have any cartlidge inbetween the ball and socket.

So I really really hope I have the same outcome as you, I wish you all the best for the future and I hope it is pain free! xx

      Hi Lauren,

Yes we both pretty young for hip replacement, but are you ever old enough to have such big operation?!

I feel u , Tramadol really changed me too, sweats and mood swings, anger and not sleeping or eating. I couldn't concentrate or remember things . It was terrible 3years.

Are u from london? Try to get appointment with Mr.Marcus.Bankes in londons Guys hospital. You still got time to change. He specialise in young people like us.

I had large cyst in my hip, microfracture ,and wear and tear. I was walking like this for last 3years so I def understand your pain.

You will  have the same outcome as me 100%, just keep positive Don't let Tramadol or pain get u! Everything will be fine and u be walking in no time.

And keep up with ur exercise after surgery as its  the only thing which will help you. Today I went to the spa for a swimming (I walked in swimming pool not swam) im really tired ,but was so worth it. I feel like I did so much exercise just walking in the water.

Keep smiling, and don't give up darling! X

    Hi Lauren!

i too suffered hip Dysplasia and congenital dislocation, requiring my first THR when I was 30. Sadly my tale is a disaster story, resulting after infections, revisions etc, now I have left girdle stone ( hip removed and no replacement put in).

i am due for the first THR on the other side now, and am, as you are, rather concerned.

You're quite right to find out as much as you can and talk to others..

I know there are some young patients on this forum

    http://hipdysplasia.org

And also a few groups on Facebook, where you might find someone in similar circumstances.

    best of luck!

I too am a disaster story but was trying to stay positive lol.  How many revisions did you have?

My original THR snapped, followed by a revision that came loose.  Currently I am 16 weeks post op in my second revision but still not convinced in has worked as getting a little pain.

How are you managing with the hip removed?

Hi... I have had a total of 9 surgeries on left hip.

I  firstly had an osteotomy to improve the socket, then the following year the total hip replacement. This became extremely painful after about 18 months, so they did a revision. They suspected a bone infection but didn't culture the material they found for more than 2 days. Pain persisted so I was refered to pain management unit.

About a year later The pain management refered me to a specialist orthopaedic centre in Oxford, where they did discover there was a bone infection that the previous hospital didn't culture for long enough. The hip was totally removed and I had IV antibiotics for 6 weeks, then had a new artificial hip joint implanted.

Sadly this kept dislocating, as it had been difficult to get the orientation exact as there had been no hip for 6 weeks.

So there was yet another revision.

After continuous chronic pain for a further 3 years, it was believed I was possibly intolerant to the metal implants, so the hip was removed, reducing mobility but hoping to stop the pain.

Unfortunately the removal of the hip necessitated breaking the femur, which was then treated with a metal rod and mesh. A year later I underwent another surgery to remove all this metal!

the pain however continued, and I became confined to bed, as movement was very painful. At this point nothing more could be done orthopaedic ally, so I went to various pain management clinics.

finally early this year I had a treatment that has, after 18 years of chronic pain, actually reduced the pain in my left hip.

However, the right hip is also deteriorating rapidly, and after seeing my consultant yesterday, he has booked me in for replacement of right hip to be done this Thursday!

      so.........

Mobilising with a girdle stone means using 2 crutches, and the left leg is about 4 inches shorter, because the joint has gone. I can't fully weightbear on left side, and cannot perform certain movements like lifting the leg, which I need to do manually! Outside I tend to use a wheelchair, as uneven ground, steps and other people are hazardous to me, I cannot change direction quickly etc if people walk into me.

So..... My surgeon has decided that he will use titanium which is bio inert, with ceramic surfacing. The spike however cannot be titanium as it isn't strong enough, so that will have to be metal. However this time he is going to use a cemented joint, which will provide a barrier between me and the metal!

All my other hips have been non cemented, as they are considered harder to do revisions on, for younger patients, who will outlive the joint, but it is necessary to do so.

UR story is very similar pain wise to mine 3 years of chronic pain is so exhausting I decided to not let the whole mess run mu life I too have ended up a invalid due to serious pain. Se my story post heading "Scary metal THR

..." Do a search on THR or go to my profile see my THR posts.

i had 2011  a metal on metal hip implant third on the old one wore out. The new device is metal on metal. In small pieces I am now suffering from tissue & bone necrosis, pseudo tumors, heavy metal blood poising and a loose stem.

it's been a long journey for both and so while our lives have been deeply affected I have let it go for PEACE..

REVISION IS SOMETIME IN THE FALL for me.. I am so sorry that an infection has created so much suffering for u. I pray that UR next revision will go well and u rehab. I know what's ahead for you and U have so many who care for you. U r a model for my next surgery and my faith is in our surgeons and God. Our journeys have been tough as I know we will Biotch find the JOY in our live we deserve.

please keep in touch in every step of the way thru UR upcoming THR surgery.

      ((Hugs))

Wow that sounds very very painfull and you have been through an awful lot! I really do hope that this is the end for you now and you are out of pain, I really do hope your pain does not increase as I do now what it is like living day in and day out in agonising pain even with really strong pain killers. I hope I do not have the problems that you did and mine goes smoothly as this is one of my massive worries.

I hope and pray that everything works out for you!x

Can I ask what you had originally that started this off? Did it start when you were born or randomly some day? I have been in chronic pain for a good 4 years now as I have had 1 huge operation that did not work and actually caused more damage so I am now walking with a dislocated hip socket and no cartlidge and ligament tears so my bone is basically grinding on one another. I have heard that they do not use metal on metal implants mush anymore so hopfully this will stop this problem, I am not having metal on metal so I hope this does not happen to me. You seem like you have come so far and overcome your problems and pain, I really do hope you will be out of pain soon as I would not wish this pain on my worst enemy! I was very excited to have my operation but they have now prolonged the date another 6 weeks which is really disapointing! I wish you all the best. x

      Thank you!

Well, op on Thursday, and I came home yesterday !!

Post op pain was just that, post op but with none of the arthritic pain from the damaged inflamed hip.

We had thought that the fact I have no left hip would mean longer to get mobile, but it wS in fact the total opposite! As I've been needing 2 crutches for 3 years, I was able to get straight up on Saturday onto a walking frame for a few steps until physio said it was so easy for me I'm getting  crutches now (unfortunately on Friday, day 1 post op the physio missed my slot as I was in X-ray!) bySunday I did the stairs, easier than it had been pre op, as the pain was surgical not like before. Now I'm home and happy!

And the ladies who had a hip replacement on the same day as me will be going home tomorrow!

So take hope, my years of pain look as tho they are over!
