Only 20 and I'm Waiting for total hip replacement- Need advice please?

Hello, I'm Lauren and I'm 20 years old I was born with Left DDH and I have had 10 operations to try and fix this but nothing has worked, I am currently waiting to have my total hip replacement on the 4th September 2014 and I cannot wait! Unfortunately I have not managed to get in contact with anyone that is around my age that has had to have a hip replacement or have similar operations? I have heard THR is great for older people but I have not spoken to anyone under the ages of 40 that has had to have one, I'm excited but very scared at the same time! Can anyone give me some information on what it is like after the total hip replacement? Thank you x

Hi, I'm a good bit older than you at 47 and I too was born with a dislocated hip which wasn't picked up until I was 6 months old, I had numerous ops as a baby which resulted in a plate and pins down my leg, these had to be removed at 14 and I was told to expect early THR, I waited as long as I could to have it done, too long truthfully I should have done it 5 years ago, but then I wasn't in the amount of pain that you are, I'm 8 weeks post op now and feeling great, not totally pain free I must admit, I'm trying to build muscles which have never been of use before but I'm without sticks now, and the best bit? I walked past B&Q today and saw myself walking straight for the first time in years!!! I can't tell you how happy that made me feel, a slight word of warning, my nurse told me younger people (although fitter) generally take longer to heal and feel the pain much more than older people, I wish you the best luck and happy days ahead for you x

Hello, I am glad to hear you are now completly out of pain as this sounds simular to my journey but just many more operations. I was like you and have tried to wait as long as possible as I was offered the operation at 14 but decided an alternative to prolong the THR but this did not work and caused me more problems!! I now just want to be out of pain, im so restricted I cant even walk around a normal sized supermarket without being in pain and as I am 20 I cannot do half the things my friends do which is the most disapointing thing so I really do hope this THR changes my life.

Thank you for the warning as I have not heard that before! I really do hope you all the best for the future and your THR lasts you are very long time! I am very happy that you are now out of pain.x
